HW #8: Special Right Triangles HW#9: Substitution HW

Unit 4, Day 12

Use substitution to solve for the problems below: 1. 3x-y=4 x+2y=13

2. 2x+3y=10 -4x+7y=6

Tuesday, April 1, 14

Review Homework
Take out homework from last night so that we can go over the problems.

Tuesday, April 1, 14

Why was #1 harder than #2?

Why was it more difficult to solve this system using substitution? Can we use a different method?
2x+3y=10 -4x+7y=6

Elimination
What does elimination mean? What are we going to eliminate?

Tuesday, April 1, 14

Steps to Eliminate!
Ex: 4x+2y=14 -2x+3y=-3

Step 1: Decide which variable you want to eliminate, and determine what constant you must multiply an equation by so that this variable will cancel when added together.
Ex: 4x+2y=14 -2x+3y=-3 I need to multiply this equation by 2. Why?
Tuesday, April 1, 14

I want to eliminate x. Why is this a good choice?

Steps to Eliminate!
Step 2: Distribute this constant throughout the whole equation and re-write your new system.
Ex: 4x+2y=14 2(-2x+3y=-3) 4x+2y=14 -4x+6y=-6

Tuesday, April 1, 14

Steps to Eliminate!
Step 3: Add the equations together. Simplify
4x+2y=14 -4x+6y=-6 0+8y=8

8y=8

Tuesday, April 1, 14

Steps to Eliminate!
Step 4: Then, solve for the variable that remains.

8y=8 y=1

Tuesday, April 1, 14

Steps to Eliminate!
Step 5: Substitute this known value in for the variable in one of the original equations to get the value of the other variable.
Ex: 4x+2(1)=14 4x+2=14 4x=12 x=3

Tuesday, April 1, 14

Steps to Eliminate!
Step 6: CHECK! By plugging in your x and y values to both equations.
Does x=3, y=1 work? Ex: 4x+2y=14 -2x+3y=-3

Tuesday, April 1, 14

Try Together!
Using elimination, solve the system of t wo variables for x and y: 3x+2y=1 9x+10y=1

Tuesday, April 1, 14

More Examples
1. 2x+3y=10 -4x+7y=6 3. 4x+5y-100=10 8x=3y-80

2. 2x+3y=10 -11x+6y=5

Tuesday, April 1, 14

Review
When should we use elimination to solve t wo variables? When should we use substitution?
