Lesson Plan Unit 4, Day 3 HEADING Karen Guarino Geometry Introduction to Triangles and Congruency OVERVIEW/ RATIONALE The

purpose of this lesson, the 3rd one in this mini-unit, is to discuss the concept of congruency and learn the ways we can prove whether two triangles are congruent or not. By having students complete guided notes, I can better ensure that they are taking down what I believe are the key concepts of the lesson. Then, having students test out the different combinations possible of sides and angles for themselves will ideally have the students come to a greater understanding of the congruence postulates. ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS/ ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS 65 Minutes

What is congruence and why is it important in geometry? What are properties of triangles that make them unique? Congruence allows us to reason indirectly. Congruence is the basis of geometric constructions. How do we prove congruence of two triangles?
GOALS/OBJECTIVES Students will know SAS, ASA, SSS, and AAS congruence theorems. They will be able to apply triangle congruence to solve problems and prove congruence between triangles. STANDARDS

33 D Use triangle congruence to solve application problems 30 D Demonstrate that two triangles are congruent using congruence shortcuts
Practices: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Attend to precision. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MATERIALS PowerPoint presentation, Days1&2 Class Notes, GSP Exploration, Triangle Congruence Homework PROCEDURES OPENER Warm-up on applying Triangle Theorems: 10 minutes

Review of warm-up and homework: Teacher will gather volunteers from the participation chart to put up their answers to the warm-up and selected homework problems: 10 minutes BODY OF THE LESSON Students will first take notes in the guided notes page that I give them as we discuss the concepts as a class. Students will be constantly questioned in order to gather understanding, and will be asked to recall what they already know: 20 minutes Students will work at their table groups on the GSP Congruence investigation. Teacher will monitor and ask questions to check for understanding: 20 minutes As a whole group, we will discuss what the students found. Students will be asked to share any noticings or wonderings. We will then establish as a class which congruence postulates did and didnt work. : 5 minutes

CLOSURE Students will be given congruence application problems for homework. Why is it useful to test out and critique theorems we learn in class? How can we take what we have learned today and apply it to future situations? How can we remember special triangles and their uniqueness in the future? ACCOMODATIONS Students who need extra assistance will be helped by SATs. Students who prefer to work alone may do so. Other accommodations will be provided as needed. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION (MAY HAPPEN IN BODY/ PROCEDURES) Students will be assessed formally on their ability to complete the warm-up, homework problems, and the GSP exploration. They will be assessed informally through conversations, questioning, participation in whole-class discussion, and attention to all steps being taken, and general monitoring throughout the process.
