Dear Mac:

Christian greetings to you and all your family. I*ve been meaning to write to you for so long now, that I*m almost ashamed to. Ever since last February, when you wrote about the material you wanted for the 7th Missionary Convention, and wanted it this month, I have been fully intending to send it, but have simply
been handicapped.

In the first place, the Ensigns were using our best slides, and what ones they didn^t have, the Phillips had. As you know, the Ensigns haven*t been here long, and the Phillips are just now arriving. As for the tapes, Jim Herget^s recorder hasn^t been working - and because of the difference in the electric cycle here, it has to be operated on a generator, which ihakes things complicated. Since the Ensigns have been here, we haven*t had the time to get anything on their*s. I had a tape with a native greeting, native singing, etc. while on tour last summer, and now I can't even find thatOur old set of slides that you have are way out of date, and we are anxious to make up a new set, since we feel those sets do us a lot more good, than the few minutes they would be shown at the convention. Won't it be possible for you to use some of the slides we have already sent to you, and have someone narrate the scripts
You know, Mac, most of the time -vitoen we apparently don't res pond promptly to your requests, it is simply because we are too busy. Actually, if we ansv/ered fully every request for information, material, slides, tapes, etc., we would spend fully fifty percent of our time at it. As it is, it keeps us "jumping" to get out our own paper on time, and answer the necessary correspondance with contributors, and
we have to spend 'more time at i t than we would really like to. The time and money spent for advertising has to kept to a reasonable min imum, and used where we have found from experience it brings the I'd like to know if you can make use of material from Jamaica

Dear Mac:

Your letter of August 5th came while I was out in an evangelistic meeting, and there have been other meetings since then, as well as

guests from America staying with us, so I am a bit tardy in answering, I know exactly what you are going through, and I know it can be upsetting and worrisome. Perhaps what I have to say will be of some help.
First, let me say that I had noticed that you were no longer carry ing news of Elliott, and all of us here are glad for that. VJe do not

/like to see unsuspecting churches deceived into supporting someone who is not worthy, and we were sorry to see the big spread in Henry's paper,
I noted carefully everything you said, and it appears that L.D.E, is carrying on q.uite true to form. But, let me warn you that no amount

of evidence in black-and-white will stop the "continual letter writing," Only one thing will do tfeat: that is, for you to ignore him completely
and not write to him at all.
someone else.

He will give up shortly and start in on

I realize that such a course is difficult at first to follow.

You

know he is in the wrong, and you are in the right, and you feel that not
only should you defend yourself, but you should convict him of his errors. But it will not work, for many others before you have tried it. He is

seared in his conscience as with a hot iron, and I do not

believe that

anyone in this world could get him to admit for a moment that he was

ever wrong about a thing.

The more "evidence" you fire at him, the more

fuel you add to the flame.

He will argue around it, twist the facts, or

just flat out deny them, and he loves to get someone to engage in a letter-writing duel with him, which will be endless unless you end it. He will insist that "common decency demands that you akknowledge" his

letters, but if you want to save yourself a lot of time and heartache, take some advice from those who have been through it all and make up
your mind to give him the old "silent" treatment.

Years ago, when I was on the receiving end of some of those threaten ing letters, I wrote Edwin Crouch in detail about the matter and asked his

advice, since he is a lawyer and had been very interested in and helpful
to the Jamaican work for years. He wrote back to say just what I am
We all

agreed to follow his advice, and it proved to be right.

Bro. Crouch has

been a one-time target too, and he has practiced what he's preached.

While your situation with Elliott is current, Mac, all his affairs

in Jamaica were ended long ago, and we had just rather not stir it up again. When this mess here all came to a head and was brought out in the open,
evidence in writing was produced against Luke, ministers from the States

who had personal interests in the work csime down to investigate, and native preachers wrote numerous letters, signed confessions, statements, etc, which finally resulted in getting him out of the island, but did
not stop him from trying to make as much trouble as possible.

The churches in Jamaica are now enjoying a peace they have not known

for years before, and the only way this peace has been obtained is by com
pletely ignoring the many letters from him and by ABSOLUTELY REFUSING to be drawn into any quarrels with him about his past conduct and activities in Jamaica. Both the local Christians and the missionaries here treasure

the peace we now have, so you can see how we would be reluctant to light
again the old fires that have caused so much division and hurt to the work in the past. Of one thing we here in Jamaica are convinced....that Jamaica is far better off spiritually and morally if Elliott has no connection

whatsoever with the work, sind for this reason we prefer that you not quote
us to him.

I am entirely in sympathy with your situation, but I get a letter similiar to yours on the average of once every six months at least. I am

Dear I^cs

Thank you for your letter. I am glad to Imox^ that you had decided on the course of action I suggested. I was a bit worried for awhile for fear you would let him draw you into something you would later regret.

Yes, Mother Elliott is a complication, and while she knox-7S little of the situation, and appears to have
perfect faith in Luke, yet she is well av/are that many
preachers are not supporting him. She has written to

us a number of times through the years (and is ali'/ays

faithful in sending used Bible School material) and not long ago she said, "It is strange why so many men who are supposed to be leaders in our churches are doing everything in their power to prevent him (Luke) from going to the mission field. God only knows why. We don*t." Those are her words as nearly as I remember
them.

With the missionary convention coming up soon, you are no doubt rushed with work. Anyway, we \7lll be
praying for the success of the gathering. Ifrs, Click

has worked hard to help us fix an exhibit to send up,

even tho we cannot have a representative present this

year.

It has been shipped to Tom Overton, so I hope he

Enclosed is a recent news-letter. You can use any of the material you see fit, and by omitting the last line or two, keep it from being a purely personal letter.
