INTRODUCTION IMPLEMENTATION OF AN E-REPORTING SCHOOL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

1.1

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

1.2

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In the past years, most academic organizations have created online platforms to handle sending report to the students but they have not tapped in to creating avenues to allow social media users and mobile device users to be able to access these records and reports to enable them check on their status and progress on their respective platforms. Hence, I propose to develop an e-reporting school management system that allows schools to send reports about their pupils via the web to ensure seamless access to there reports/records. The e-reporting school management system solution will be built to run on a network thereby allowing users within the network to perform report assessment within the system.

1.3 AIMS OF THE STUDY The aim of this project is to design and develop an e-reporting school management system that allows schools to send only reports about their pupils over the web.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY. This study aims at so many objectives. They are listed as follow: 1. To encourage the use of the Internet as a means for student report management. 2. To identify existing mobile e-reporting frameworks and systems. 3. To model the functionalities of the proposed system. 4. To develop a prototype of the e-reporting system. 5. To ease the process of report tracking amongst individuals.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY.

This project will be implemented using the following technology: 1. PHP 2. MySQL. 3. JavaScript. 4. HTML5 and CSS3

1. PHP: PHP is an open source language developed with C++ that allows programmers develop web applications. It is also known as a scripting language. The full meaning of PHP is HYPERTEXT PREPROCESSOR.

2. MySQL: MySQL is an open source RDBMS that allows for efficient storage of data and data management. Comes freely with PHP in a XAMPP package to enable web applications store data needed to allow the web application for the necessary storage.

3. JavaScript: JavaScript is a client-side scripting language that imposes a lot of interactivity in web applications. Most web applications are JavaScript powered either by building it from scratch up or using JavaScript Framework such as Jquery, Backbone.js, and Node.js etc.

4. HTML and CSS: HTML is a formatting language used to create web page layouts. They are used for form creation on web applications and also have support for client-side validation. Launched in the year 2009, HTML comes with very powerful features to ensure cool layouts on web applications. CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) is also a formatting language that improves the presentation of web applications. Most web applications are now built with a support for CSS formatting

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY.

The relevance/significance of this study is to foster and automate the operations of school management activities to improve transparency and accountability within academic institutions that are involved with student report management. This study is going to help in a great deal of further improving already existing study as regards to academic student report management systems that exist within Nigeria. This study is also going to allow us understand the feedbacks from user as regards the use of social media as a tool for academic e-reporting to explore the security threats in using this platform.

1.6

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY.

As much as the advantages of e-reporting solutions are more than the bottlenecks, there are still some bottlenecks as regards to e-reporting student management systems. They are as follows: 1. Lack of Technical Know-How in using Social Media Applications. 2. Out-dated Infrastructures to power this technology. 3. High level of cyber-crime. 4. Possible Fraudulent Actions by people. 5. Most e-reporting management system solutions are not always 100% efficient.
