Spreading HIV Awareness I. Introduction:

In 1981 a virus called HIV first surfaced in Europe and quickly spread throughout the world within a couple of years it had affected millions of people. Today there are 34 million people who currently have HIV,97% of whom are located in Africa("Global Statistics." ). Most of these people worldwide do not have easy access to treatment for HIV or testing centers. HIV is a very deadly and dangerous virus that is spread through sexual contact, needles, and bodily fluids. In recent years the highest percentage of new HIV cases in among 12-14 years and is currently on the rise("HIV Among Youth.") . HIV attacks the immune system and makes it easier for you to contract other diseases such as tuberculosis, and without proper treatment will develop into AIDS and will slowly kill a person(HIV/AIDS Basics). It is important we stop the spread of HIV so that we can save the lives of the innocent and prevent this atrocious disease from spreading through building awareness . HIV has already taken the lives of 25 million people around the world(HIV/AIDS Basics). This is a horrendous disease has largely developed into an epidemic among 3rd world countries worldwide. To cease the spread of this epidemic I plan on implementing several measures to raise money for AIDS research, by volunteering at the AIDS Foundation Houston, and also plan to increase the number of people who get tested regularly for HIV and to raise an amount of $500-$1000 to donate to AIDS Foundation Houston. I will volunteer at the AIDS Foundation Houston in order to help make a difference in the community. The AIDS Foundation Houston is an organization that works to help stop the spread

of HIV through the use of education classes that are used to inform the public of how to take proper care to prevent HIV by using safe sex and getting tested regularly. The AIDS Foundation Houston offers help for people with HIV by giving them easy access to housing and health care if they are financially unstable, and also helps to support and guide kids with HIV with the right skills for the future. By volunteering at AIDS Foundation Houston I will be able to make a difference among the Houston community by spreading the necessary knowledge needed to prevent HIV and also to provide the necessary aid needed for people who have HIV. The money donated to AIDS Foundation Houston will be used to help homeless youth who have been kicked out by their family or disowned because of their status by giving them a place to stay. The money will be used in providing food and clothing through a program called soup stone. By taking these steps we will not only make a difference to decrease the spread of HIV in the Houston community we will also be able to give treatment to people in Houston which will lower the number of infections caused by HIV. This capstone will challenge me to be responsible and follow through with plans and actions. It will help better my communication skills and help me to learn the proper skills I will need for a job and in college. My capstone will address the four Asia Society Global Leadership Performance Outcomes which include; Investigating the World, Recognizing Perspectives, Communicating Ideas, Taking Action. By studying how HIV affects people in other countries and talking with AIDS Foundation Houston and communicating plans and Ideas with officials and, implementing this actions I will be able to face these 4 pillars.
