LOOK WHAT I DID WITH MY DAD

A car
23
I wanted to take part in the car race that has been organized in town, so I asked my father to help me build one. Dad, Ive drawn it. I would like it to be like this... What do you think? Lets see... Very good Martin. Well try.

45
We need a tool box and some planks of wood. And also four wheels! Where will we get them from? Ive got them already, Dad! Come on, Ill show them to you. Two are from my old bicycle and Henry the mechanic kept the other two for me. Will you help me to take the ones off my bike? Lets go!

67
As soon as we had all the material at hand, we set to work. We built the frame with the planks, cutting here and nailing there. It was more diff icult to position the wheels, although once they were in place... Great! Its starting to look like a car! I said.

89
As it had to be a racing car, I wanted to put a f in on the back part so that it would go faster. We also placed a bumper on it to strengthen the rear part.

10 11
Once we had f inished the most complicated work, only the details remained. We added the lights, the brakes and a horn. Hey, dad, the steering wheel is missing! Then I remembered that Mum had some tablemats in the kitchen I might be able to use. If we also joined them together with a broomstick, it might work. And yes, it did work!

12 13
Then I also wanted to paint some speed stripes on it to decorate it. Guys! Its looking fantastic! Exclaimed my mother when she saw how we had progressed. Ga, ga, ga, gi, gi, gi... said my little sister, although nobody could understand her.

14 15
Before testing it, I put on my driving helmet, glasses and gloves. Ready, steady... Go! I exclaimed. Going downhill, the car went very fast. I had to brake at the bottom to avoid crashing into some trees in the garden. It was very close!

16 17
The great race was the following day and I was

quite nervous. Dad helped me to carry the car to the starting line. Good luck, Martin! He said. There I met with a lot of my friends who were also taking part. There were all kinds of cars for all tastes.

18 19
We heard: BANG! I set off next to a car decorated with so many colors that it looked like a rainbow. As I was distracted for a few moments, some friends overtook me.

20 21
Let the adventure begin! I thought. Then I imagined that I was driving a Formula 1 car. I pressed the accelerator to the limit and gained speed immediately. As I was going very fast, I took the f irst bend very tightly and came off the track. Phew!

22 23
The next stretch was full of puddles, so I imagined that the car we had built was transformed into a four-wheel drive and I was in the middle of the jungle, crossing an immense raging river.

24 25
The race continued along a sandy track and I imagined that we were taking part in a rally through the desert. Suddenly, I turned over. I got out of the car with diff iculty and straightened it with the help of a rope I was carrying. Luckily, I was able to carry on as if nothing had happened!

26 27
On the last stretch of the race, I forgot the desert, the jungle and the grand Formula 1 prize to concentrate on the goal. The race was very competitive,

but I made a great effort and arrived in third place. Great! I shouted euphorically.

28 29
Mum, Dad and my little sister came to congratulate me and covered me with kisses right there. When I climbed onto the podium, they gave me a cup and my Mum took loads of photos of me. Bravo, Martin! You did very well! Exclaimed Mum and Dad.

30 31
When we got home, I had to repair the car: I checked the wheels, positioned the steering wheel well, cleaned the seat and the bodywork, repaired the f in and with the help of my father, we sewed the f lag. We left it ready for the next race!

A LITTLE HISTORY...
Before the wheel was invented, people moved about on foot or riding on animals such as horses and donkeys. The fir st cars worked by means of cogs and levers. It was not until the 18th Century that carriages driven f irst by steam and then by the combustion engine were invented. At the end of the 19th Century, the f irst car with a petrol engine appeared. With time and in different countries, the various elements comprising an automobile have been improved and perfected. For this reason, there is no single inventor of the automobile, but rather it was made possible thanks to the effort and genius of different people. Nowadays, research is underway to improve the production of electric cars, which constitute an advantage for the environment, because they are less polluting. Safety is one of the most important aspects of a car. The manufacturers dedicate great attention to this aspect and for this reason cars have safety belts and airbags. Special seats are alsof itted for children. All these elements serve to save lives and reduce the risks of serious injuries being suffered in the event of an accident. T YPES OF CARS Depending on the use we make of them, we can speak about different types of cars: A minivan: Has seven or eight seats and tends to be used by large families. An off-roader: Is a car with traction in all four wheels designed for driving on all sorts of terrains (dirt, stone, water, steep slopes and rises). A limousine: Is a luxury car longer than usual inside which you can f ind a range of special elements, such as a bar, television and computer... A sports car: Is a car produced specially to be driven

very fast and it has a very powerful engine. A formula 1 car: Is a single-seat car created for racing on circuits at great speed. OTHER CARS There are f ire engines, police cars, ambulances and taxis... These vehicles are usually painted in special colors so that they can be easily recognized. Some adaptations are also performed on them so that they are suitable for their function: Sirens, hoses, taximeters and cameras, etc., are f itted.
