Steinberg Solution Guide

The Story of Steinberg and Yamaha

Steinberg has created award-winning, technologically-advanced audio software and hardware since 1984. With more than 1.5
million users globally, Steinberg (a Yamaha subsidiary) is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of these products, which are
used by musicians and producers to create albums and soundtracks for video and film. Steinbergs wide-ranging products are
world-renown in the world of modern digital audio processing. They form the backbone of facilities specializing in music compo-
sition and production, mastering, restoration, broadcast, sound design, audio post for the film industry, and many others.
Since its foundation, Steinberg has constantly pushed the boundaries of what is possible in digital audio. In January 2005,
Steinberg became a wholly owned subsidiary of Yamaha Corporation, the worlds leading manufacturer of audio hardware.
By joining forces with Yamaha, the company ensured that the legacy of innovation and quality would finally find a supportive and
equally quality-minded partner. Our groundbreaking technologies offer flexible, cost-effective and intuitive ways of realizing
your full creative and professional potential. Steinbergs technologies include VST, ASIO and AI three standards that have
ignited the computer recording revolution.
VST allows the integration of virtual effect processors and instruments into the digital audio environment. These can be software
recreations of hardware effect units and instruments or new creative effect components in your VST system. The Audio Stream
Input/Output (ASIO) architecture forms the backbone of VST. It supports variable bit depths and sample rates, multi-channel
operation and synchronization. As a result, the user gets low latency, high performance, easy setup, and stable audio recording
within VST. It is now the preferred audio standard used by many other leading software manufacturers.
AI is a technology developed in close collaboration between Steinberg and Yamaha. The AI technology allows for a seamless
integration of the Digital Audio Workstations developed by Steinberg into the digital audio hardware from Yamaha and Steinberg.
AI provides plug-and-play to an as-yet unknown level; the software automatically carries out the required settings of the con-
nected hardware, such as selecting drivers, input and output configurations, and remote settings. In addition, the technology
offers various dedicated remote functions, data exchange, and much more.
Thanks to the union with Yamaha, Steinberg began to create high quality hardware products with Yamahas award-winning
engineers and designers products that ensure that Steinberg is known as the pre-eminent system solution company.
Steinbergs lineup has dramatically grown to include the MR Series of Firewire audio interfaces, the CI Series of portable USB
audio interfaces and the recent addition of the class-leading UR Series of USB 2.0 audio interfaces. Ever innovating, Steinbergs
CMC Series is the worlds first lineup of modular controllers, consisting of six sleek designs offering the utmost in flexibility and
superior ease of use.
These hardware additions join the formidable lineup of software that Steinberg is best known for, including: Cubase, the worlds
leading Digital Audio Workstation; Nuendo, the post production powerhouse; Wavelab, for deep editing and mastering; and
Sequel, the easy to use music production studio. These programs unite with some legendary instruments and effects that take
full advantage of VST host software including the Rupert Neve Design Portico Series of Plug-ins, The Grand virtual piano instru-
ment, The Yamaha Vintage Plug-in Collection and the HALion lineup of sound creation and sampling plug-ins.
Steinberg passionately continues to create innovative, flexible and inspiring system solutions that offer the worlds best
experience in recording and digital audio.

The preamp is where sound creation begins in recording, and ultimately determines the quality of your mix.
The D-PRE is carefully designed to capture all the subtleties and expressiveness of any audio source and
is the culmination of years of development by the experienced engineers at the Yamaha Corporation. The
results are stunning, and the difference is in the design.
Usually, preamps use one transistor each for the hot and cold signals at the input stage to amplify the signal.
However, the D-PREs specified on Steinberg audio interfaces use an inverted Darlington circuit, where two
transistors are used for each hot and cold- a total of four per unit. With only one transistor on a preamp
circuit, distortion tends to increase along with the signal level. By using a pair of two cascaded transistors,
very low distortion can be maintained regardless of signal level.
Why does the D-PRE preamp sound so good?
Some users might look for a microphone preamp to dramatically color the sound while others search for a
very neutral response. For example, some highly sought after vintage microphone preamps excel at amplifying
certain components of a given source, imparting a generous amount of color to the signal. Such a preamp
might be great for a vocal recording, however those preamps will not suit every use. D-PRE has a very wide
frequency range so that it can handle any music source and it does not overly amplify any specific components
of the signal. It`s beautifully tuned to be able to capture the true expression of a given performance or audio
source, while leaving flexibility for later editing. The end result is that D-PRE provides a sound that is a perfect
amalgamation of understated signal enhancement combined with impeccable sonic integrity. The development
team took a lot of time to adjust this subtle balance and the D-PRE sound quality speaks for itself.

DSP Effect
The REV-X built into the UR824, UR28M, and MR816 is a
complex reverb algorithm developed by Yamaha. Renowned
for its high-density, richly reverberant sound quality, with
smooth attenuation, spread and depth that work together to
enhance the original sound, the REV-X features three types
of reverb effects: Hall, Room and Plate simulations with
reverb time and level control. By using FX Bus function
equipped with dspMixFx, REV-X can be routed to playback
channel as well. You can apply same reverb sound for the
playback track after recording.
JetPLL

Our Technologies
Developed by Steinberg and first launched in 1996, Virtual Studio Technology (VST) creates a full, professional studio
environment on your MAC or PC computer. VST allows the integration of virtual effect processors and instruments into
your digital audio environment. These can be software recreations of hardware effect units and instruments or new
creative effect components in your VST system. All are integrated seamlessly into the host application. Because these
connections are virtual, there is no need for messy audio or MIDI cabling. These VST modules have the sound quality of
the best hardware units, yet are far more flexible. All functions of a VST effect processor or instrument are directly
controllable and automatable, either with a mouse or with external hardware controllers.
This revolutionary new standard brings true connectivity and platform independence to the digital audio world. VST
System Link enables the transfer of synchronization, transport and audio data between two or more workstations
equipped with compatible software and hardware over standard digital audio cabling systems such as ADAT, TDIF,
AES/EBU or S/PDIF. Because it uses the audio stream itself, synchronization is completely sample accurate, even
across multiple workstation configurations. VST System Link lets you take your audio projects to new levels of com-
plexity, and offers unbelievable flexibility in your working environment.
VST3 marks an important milestone in audio technology with a completely rewritten code base providing not only many
new features but also the most stable and reliable VST platform ever. VST 3.5 is a groundbreaking new version with a
host of new capabilities, including VST 3 controller and Note Expression support as well as VST Expression Maps inte-
gration.
The Audio Stream Input/Output (ASIO) architecture forms the backbone of VST. It is a low-latency, high performance
audio standard that is used by the entire MI industry. ASIO addresses any needs a professional audio recording
solution might have. It does this by supporting variable bit depths and sample rates, multi-channel operation and
synchronization. As a result, the user gets low latency, high performance, easy set up and stable audio recording within
VST. The entire system becomes controllable and offers complete and immediate access to the audio system's
capabilities. Since its introduction, ASIO has become a supported standard by many leading audio hardware
manufacturers - for good reason.
AI stands for Advanced Integration, being a technology developed in close collaboration between Steinberg and
Yamaha. The AI technology allows for a seamless integration of the DAWs developed by Steinberg into the digital
audio hardware from Yamaha and Steinberg. AI provides plug-and-play at an as-yet unknown level: now the software
automatically carries out the the required settings of the connected hardware, such as selecting drivers, input and
output configuration and the remote settings. In addition, the technology also offers various dedicated remote
functions, data exchange and much more.
This technology integrates dspMixFx and MR/UR Editors into the Cubase and Nuendo interface in order to get faster
operation. All aspects of I/O handling, DSP management and independent performer mixes are handled directly from
within Cubase itself. This offers real-time, independent and most importantly no-latency mixes with FX for several
performers.
The eLicenser is a copy protection system which is needed to use Steinberg's software range.
There are two types of eLicenser is available depending on software.
The USB-eLicenser (formerly "Steinberg Key") is a copy protection unit (sometimes called "dongle").
It is actually a tiny computer which stores licenses for Steinberg products, and is connected to a USB
port on your computer. The Steinberg copy protection system allows the storage of several licenses
on the same USB-eLicenser. Licenses can also be transferred between USB-eLicensers with certain limitations.
The Soft-eLicenser uses exactly same technology with the USB-eLicenser but an authorization key
will be stored on a harddisk drive. The authorization key can be transfered to a USB-eLicenser. This can be
very useful if you wish to run a Steinberg software on different computers (not at once). Once the
authorization key is transfered to a USB-eLicenser, the key can not be transfered back to harddisk drive.

The new global Chord Track allows for easy working with
chords within your Project window and provides transform
and harmonize functions throughout the application. Cubase
detects the harmony structure of your song and feeds back
all chord and scale information to both MIDI and audio tracks
processed with VariAudio.
Chord Track
The powerful new Chord Assistant helps you to generate everything
from simple pop to complex jazz chord sequences that just sound
fabulous. Want to specify both the first and final chords but have no
clue how to get there? This, also, is possible in Cubase 7. The Chord
Assistant lists chord suggestions from which you can choose it's
all just a click away.
Chord Assistant
VariAudio offers completely integrated vocal editing
and pitch alteration of individual notes in monophonic
vocal recordings and can solve intonation and timing
problems with only a few mouse clicks. With 2.0 up-
date, the seamless integration with the newly intro-
duced Chord Track ensures correct pitch to your har-
monies at all times. Talking about multiple tracks,
now you can smartly edit multiple VariAudio parts
across multiple tracks within one editor only!
Vari Audio 2.0
In Cubase 7 rhythmic audio material can be quantized just like any
MIDI material, offering numerous possibilities to fix timing issues and
to change the groove of live-recorded drums. To preserve phase rela-
tionships between tracks, the individual slices on all tracks are still
grouped and moved at once. Cubase automatically creates
cross-fades between slices to ensure seamless transitions between
them and fill gaps that might be introduced during quantization.
Multi-Track Phase Accurate Audio Quantization
Note Expression is the new smart way to assign, create and edit multiple
controller values directly on single note-level all in a single handy graphi-
cal interface. The perfect choice for demanding orchestral arrangements
and creating unique sound effects, Note Expression allows controller values
to be drawn directly onto single note events in the Key Editor. Because
each individual note event contains its own set of controller data, even poly-
phonic sounding notes can now be dynamically controlledfully indepen-
dent from each other.
Note Expression
Thanks to the Hermode tuning technology, the intonation of your synthe-
sized notes are changed dynamically on the fly for utmost compatibility with
well-tempered scales, while retaining a high degree of purity for third and
fifth intervals. Especially when combining non-fixed-intonation instruments,
like brass and woodwind, and fixed-intonation instruments, such as guitars
and piano, entire orchestral arrangements sound immediately clearer and
more brilliant than before.

Hans Zimmer on his DAW of Choice
Hans Zimmer needs no introduction, and yet there`s so much happening around him that we simply feel the urge to
spread the news from time to time with great fervor. Scoring well over 100 films, Hans Zimmer has been awarded with
two Golden Globes, one Oscar and three Grammy`s as well as counting an array of nominations.
You are a veteran in film score composing. Do you still encounter situations that take you aback?
All films come with difficult situations. It`s not like a job that you learn to get good at because repetitive motion is involved.
Honestly, the whole point is everyone forever asking me to do something new and unexpected. The bottom line is that I
always start with a blank page and that`s the job: looking to reinvent yourself time and again plus you`re supposed to be
slightly ahead of the zeitgeist. The problems of being a film composer are vast [laughs] - every day is a dilemma somehow.
And thats why you have to be able to rely 100% on your DAW. How does Cubase support you during the composing process?
By not crashing - but seriously, I was amazed by how much I was throwing at Cubase and it never winced, never seized
up, never faltered. It`s always an extreme thing, and although I honestly can`t recall how many audio tracks were being
used, remember that everything we do is in 5.1 so that quickly adds tracks, plus there are 300-400 MIDI tracks going at
the same time. We also tried to keep everything virtual on this movie up until the very end. Other than the orchestra and
soloist Johnny Ma, even most of the synths were kept virtual all the way through the mix.Another thing is that Cubase
sounds really good. And what I mean by that is that what you put into Cubase is what you get out. It`s not colored like
other systems. I can tell straight away when somebody brings in a Logic track - I know exactly what it was recorded on.
Part of why I like Cubase is that I don`t sound like everybody else. I mean we never use library sounds. You don`t really
want to hear a sound you have in your 160-million-dollar movie in somebody else`s movie in the theater next door so
everything we use is made from scratch. And so it`s very important to me that the quality of the software ensures that
whatever work I put into it, it isn`t going to get colored. We already had this with the early digital recording where you can
listen to a recording and you literally can put a time stamp onto it. And I think this will also happen with other DAWs. So
you don`t really want to be able to identify the sound and that`s why the DAW has to be as transparent as possible so that
it becomes timeless.
Are there any features you enjoy particularly in Cubase?
For doing orchestral stuff, VST Expression is absolutely brilliant. It makes perfect sense. It seems crazy that we`ve been
writing down instructions on paper in a simple way for hundreds of years but this wonderful sequencer just couldn`t do it.
Sometimes it`s good to embrace some of the old things that simply work. But I think I get the most fun out of the things
you can now do with soft-synths and the incredible things you can do with plug-ins.
Are there any virtual instruments you use?
I use very few now. The main thing I use is Zebra by Urs Heckman for synthesizers but also some hardware, such as a
few old Moog modulars via MIDI interfaces. There`s also my sampler which we had to build from scratch. Mark Wherry
has been building it and it`s slightly over the top as far as the technology is concerned. And we`ve been creating our own
library and that project just goes on forever because we keep on adding to it. The problem with samples is that you get
bored. Unfortunately, every time you press the same note, the same sound comes back at you. I`ve never understood
why people don`t make their own sample library because it`s really not that hard, it just takes a bit of time and having a
few friends who can play instruments extraordinarily well plus a hall for recording. And it`s so much better because it`s
custom-made.
Do you have any final words before we close up this interview?
If you come to think of it, these movies which cost zillions of dollars, at the end of the day, they put their trust in a piece of
software like Cubase. It works flawlessly, we meet the deadline and we get to do everything we imagined to do. That`s
quite a testament on how reliable Cubase is these days. It`s an incredibly advanced program and although it`s difficult for
me to say since I`ve been working with it for so long, it does seem like anybody can just pick it up and make music with it
very, very quickly. And isn`t that the point, that whatever`s in your head, you`re supposed to be able to get it out and into
your sequencer as quickly as you can.

Creating an exact digital image of world-class analog audio processors has
always been a soughtafter goal until Yamaha, world's largest and most
successful manufacturer of quality musical instruments, introduced a revolu-
tionary technology that enables to create highly accurate digital copies of
analog hardware: Virtual Circuitry Modeling (VCM) technology.
VCM was developed by an engineering group led by Toshifumi Kunimoto, a senior engineer who was also responsible for the first
physical modeling synthesizers, VL1 and VP1. VCM enables an ultra-realistic digital reproduction of individual components in analog
circuits, such as resistors and capacitors. Besides modeling the functionality of a circuit and the interaction between single compo-
nents, VCM focuses on an unprecedented musical simulation of analog sound qualities, including typical characteristics like saturation
and non-linearity subtleties that simple digital simulations cannot capture.
Each effect is carefully analyzed by some of the best ears in the business and tweaked to provide the best-sounding results in today`s
pro sound environment. Breathtakingly accurate, yet highly musical the VCM technology is the most straightforward approach to
analog sound modeling and is now available in the RND Portico plug-ins

by Studer, Ampex and others.
A group of plug-ins that reproduces the guitar
effectors so popluar in the 70s. VCM technology
models these vintage effects broadly and faith-
fully, capturing just about everythingincluding the
characteristics of their hardware parts and circuits.
The result: a warm, rich and nostalgic sound, and
an easy-to-use interface that reproduces the feel
of the original effect pedals.

What Do Madonna, Moby and Ministry of Sound Have in Common?
Andy Bolleshon, founder of Time Tools Mastering & Publishing, has devoted his life to music, working as a producer,
musician, mastering engineer, label owner and music publisher for over 15 years in the music industry. In 1988,
Bolleshon joined the Canadian electro-pop band Psyche as their live keyboardist only soon after to go on world tour
with Anne Clarke. After completing his training as studio assistant, he worked at several renowned London-based
music studios, later returning to Germany with a vision to establish mastering on an international level straight out of
the heart of Hanover. Since then, many internationally acclaimed musicians, including Fat Boy Slim, Moby, Timo
Maas and Mousse T., and superstars like Madonna and Tom Jones have turned to him.
Which aspects of your job do you enjoy the most? And how is it to work together with international stars the likes of Madonna?
It pleases me when an artist comes to us after months and months of hard work in order for us to give the music an
assertive sound and our special touch so that our customer can happily pass on the finalized album to the press plant.
Working with artists is very matter of fact when it comes to mastering. Since all stars have a tight schedule and many
people working for them, I mostly correspond with the record companies or the producers. In Madonna`s case, actually
everything went through the record company and management. On the other hand, there are many artists who want to
be personally involved. Peter Fox, who doesn`t want to leave anything to chance, is a really good example. First, he
requested test masters from various mastering studios before my studio and another studio finally got the job for mastering
his album. And it didn`t end here: the first single release Alles Neu from the album was mastered by both studios. Then,
the two masters were edited together and premiered on a Monday`s radio show, each being played for about 30 seconds.
The song was recorded from the home radio at home and analyzed. Finally, the song was mixed and mastered all over
again and broadcasted a second time on the Friday.

What Steinberg tools do you work with at Time Tools? And why do you use our software?
We work with Nuendo and WaveLab. Nuendo is used for playing back and recording within the analog signal chain. We
employ WaveLab to finalize projects and create the final CD or DDP master. Both programs allow for a workflow that is
very time-saving and efficient. This is a decisive factor since we are continuously required to meet deadlines.
The possibilities of home recording have continuously improved over the past years. Do you have a useful recording tip
for the Steinberg home recording users?
The most important thing is to ensure a good monitoring system before spending lots of money on other equipment. A
good acoustic space and the right loudspeakers are the foundation of a good mix. This knowledge is based on our daily
business: customers with a superior monitoring system usually provide the best mixes, even when working with only a
couple audio tools. I am sorry to say many people think that using 20 plug-ins per channel only achieves a great mix.
Actually, our experience shows time and again that less is more. When mastering, we have the means to affect the sound
and punch to a significant degree, which our customers are unable to achieve. Hence, it is usually easier to work on
untouched mixes in order for us to work to the full extent of our abilities.
Would you say there are more private customers nowadays that like to have their recordings professionally mastered?
Yes, this is certainly the case. Today we have more private customers who require our service. We even assist a number
of customers during the mixing process, making suggestions in order for them to achieve a better result. Keep in mind,
when it gets down to it the master can only be as good as the customer`s mix. Meanwhile many bands record and mix
their albums in their rehearsal rooms. It`s very similar with hip hop and dance music where most productions are home-
made. Due to bad monitoring conditions and the lack of experience, I can`t emphasize the importance of professional
mastering enough. Just imagine a band producing that dream-come-true album which will be played to their grandchildren
30 years down the line. Now this album is going to be mastered by someone who doesn`t cost much but also has no
experience. Sadly, the result won`t meet expectations - only to have saved a couple hundred. And that`s why many
private customers are truly happy to entrust us with their projects.
