TEACHING THE ALPHABET Alphabet Instruction Basic Steps: There are many ways to teach the alphabet and

all Teachers develop their own style over time. For new teachers here is a basic outline of steps you can follow when introducing a new letter: 1. Hold up an alphabet letter flashcard so all pupils can see it. 2. Chorus the letter 3 to times.

Alphabet Line-up: 5ive each pupil an alphabet flashcard. *lay the %4C song and have the pupils s!ip around in a circle singing along to the song. 3top the tape at random points and the 3s have to line up in the correct alphabetical order according to their cards. Alphabet Soup: *lace plastic letters in a bowl. -ivide flashcards by their beginning letters. 6ach student draws a letter from the bowl and then finds the flashcards associated with that letter Alphabet Wave: -ivide the a'7 flashcards among all your students. *ut pupils in a line and play the %4C song. %s it plays each student must hold up their corresponding alphabet flashcard. Balloon Alphabet: This is a great game that everyone loves. 8ou need a balloon2 this is your timing device evo!ing the alphabet from the pupil unpredictably. This game can get a bit out of hand if the teacher isn&t careful in his9her method of control. Bingo: ;a!e bingo cards with letters instead of numbers. The winner is the first to either get a line or or full house. Letter Sculptures: 6ither print the alphabet on the board or use alphabet flashcards. -ivide the class into teams of 3. ;odel that each team must wor! together and use their bodies to ma!e a letter. 'agic $inger: This is a good activity to use before going on to printing practice. 5o through your routine of teaching a letter using an alphabet flashcard. Then hold the flashcard letter up in front of each 3 and let them trace the letter on the card with their &magic& finger. 'a(e an Alphabet Boo(: For this you need: Aing binder folder2 white paper = old maga7ines. 6ach wee! we choose a new letter to wor! on. .rite the upper and lower case letter on a piece of white paper2 then go through old maga7ines with your pupils to find pictures that begin with that letter. Bet them cut them out and glue them on the paper2 which helps them improve their cutting s!ills too0 @se a hole punch and put it into a folder to ma!e a boo!. The pupils love to loo! at it over and over. )ubbings: 8ou need sand paper2 scissors2 crayons = paper. Cut shapes2 letters or numbers out of sand paper. *ut the shapes under the paper and let the children rub over the top with the crayons. Have them rub their name2 etc. Scrapboo(: 8ou need an old scrapboo! or photo album2 old maga7ines = scissors. Ta!e a scrapboo! or photo album and on each page write a letter of the alphabet starting at % through to :. Then with your 3s loo! through maga7ines for pictures of things and put them on the pages with the same first letter. %n e+ample would be a picture of an airplane for %2 etc. @se photo albums with the cling plastic covering so no gluing is involved. %fterward your 3s have their very own class alphabet boo! that they helped to ma!e. Slo* #otion: T holds a pac! of alphabet flashcards with the letters facing towards him9her. The last card should be turned around so the letter is facing the 3s but is hidden as it is behind the pac!. 3lowly pull the flashcard up inch by inch so the 3s can only see part of the letter. %s the letter is slowly revealed 3s try to guess what it is. The first 3 to guess correctly !eeps the card #for 1 point(. Variation: To ma!e it a little more difficult turn each letter flashcard upside down.
