1-2
Introducing AlvariBase
AlvariBase is a point to multipoint Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) system designed to deliver voice and data services to a wide range of customers. AlvariBase combines the strengths of Alvarions BreezeACCESS and WALKair systems, allowing operators to simultaneously serve multiple customer profiles with a rich set of services, including packet data, Voice over IP and TDM. WALKair and BreezeACCESS solutions are the industrys most comprehensive set of Broadband Wireless Access solutions. BreezeACCESS systems deliver fast packet data and high quality Voice over IP telephony services, making BWA deployment quick, simple and cost effective. They provide IP and POTS services to businesses and residences, with near line of sight operation and easily installed CPEs. The WALKair system delivers high capacity IP data services, carrier class Frame Relay services and TDM services. Bringing together the best of both Alvarion solutions, the AlvariBase product allows operators unprecedented flexibility in the choice of customers addressed and services provided. The AlvariBase enables operators to create a BWA system that provides the advantages of both WALKair and BreezeACCESS using a single infrastructure. AlvariBase operates in the licensed 3.400-3.600 GHz frequency band.

System Components
The following chart displays the system components of the AlvariBase system.
1-4
BS-AU-WA
The BS-AU-WA consists of a AlvariBase Access Unit indoor module which connects with two IF cables (Tx and Rx) to the WALKair IF MUX. Three different models support the three types of WALKair RFUs (A, B and C). The module presents a single Ethernet interface to the backbone network. The BS-AU-WA may be configured for a single carrier (channel) operation or for frequency hopping mode of operation. Up to six modules can be installed in each BS-SH chassis. When operating in frequency hopping mode, the BS-AU-WA modules can be synchronized with each other to ensure minimal interference between neighboring sectors. The optional use of GPS for synchronization ensures that the all units in the entire system are synchronized.

Frequency Bands
BreezeACCESS and WALKair systems each have several product variants supporting different frequency band. The following table summarizes these bands: Table 1-1: Alvarion Products Frequency Bands

* In BreezeACCESS units running SW versions 4.0 and above the a1 band is 3400-3452 MHz for the uplink and 3500-3552 MHz for the downlink. ** The 3.5ab band is supported by SU-R Subscriber Units only. The base station utilizes WALKair radio frequency equipment, and thus operates in one of the WALKair band. BreezeACCESS SU-R-3.5ab Subscriber Units can be used with all WALKair radios. However, when deploying BreezeACCESS SU-A/E Subscriber Units that operate in either the 3.5a1 or the 3.5b radio bands in such a system, it is important to ensure that the correct BreezeACCESS band equipment is installed. The following table should serve as a guideline: Table 1-2: AlvariBase Frequency Band Mapping

ATPC in BS-AU-WA
The BreezeACCESS Subscriber Unit should not be received by the RFU-BS at a level that exceeds -60 dBm. To meet this requirement, several rules, outlined in Selecting and Configuring Subscriber Units on page 3-15, should be followed. One of these rules is that the ATPC Option must be enabled in the BS-AU-WA and all Subscriber Units served by the selected BS-AU-WA. This ensures that the transmitted power of SUs is adjusted automatically, if necessary. The functioning of the Automatic Transmit Power Control is described in BreezeACCESS XL System Manual. To minimize transmissions at levels that might be too high, the ATPC algorithm in an AlvariBase system operates differently than in a standard BreezeACCESS system: RSSI at the AU is too High: When an AlvariBase unit receives an association request, it immediately checks the RSSI value. If the RSSI is above the Maximum RSSI Level, a special 100% Power Down message is sent within the association response. The SU that receives this message lowers its transmit power level to the minimum possible (Transmit Power Control = 0 in SU-A/E, Power Level = Low in SU-R). In standard BreezeACCESS systems the decrease in power is gradual, according to the defined ATPC Power Level Step. If the transmissions at the minimum transmit level are received by the AU at a level that is below the Minimum RSSI Level, the ATPC algorithm increases the transmit level gradually until it reaches the optimal range. The situation where the minimum transmit level is too low for proper reception by the AU is also handled differently than in a standard BreezeACCESS system, as described below. RSSI at the AU is too Low: It is possible that after decreasing the transmit power level the SU is not received at a sufficient level by the AU but remains associated with it since it continues to receive beacons. In a standard BreezeACCESS system, using the ATPC algorithm, this situation is handled by increasing the transmit power level of the SU to its maximum value after 20 successive frames are dropped. In an AlvariBase system, the SU increases its power level by one step after each 20 successive drops, until reaching a power level that enables proper communication with the AU. This enables the ATPC algorithm to operate effectively, or until the maximum power level is reached.
