- Before I begin my substantive I would like to rebut the propositions points. -Moving on to my substantive, I have 3 points of contention.

- In this debate there are 3 main issues: Firstly, is banning smacking necessary and beneficial? Secondly, what is the nature of the parent and child relationship that makes smacking a viable form of discipline? Thirdly, how does smacking affect the child? - We, the opposition believe that smacking bests enhances the parent and child relationship and embodies the essential principle of appropriate discipline. Speaker 1 - Parents are the official guardians of children - They know their children best - They therefore have the right and ability to make the decision of smacking the child, because they know whether its appropriate. - (I say appropriate because) All children learn differently. All children develop at different speeds. Some children will stop misbehaving when theyve been scolded, others will only stop when theyve been smacked. - The option of smacking as a form of discipline should not be banned as some children are best disciplined in that manner, and parents are the last group of people you want to ban when it comes to smacking as they have the ability and right to decide if a child should be smacked as punishment.

- The purpose of discipline is to correct a childs behaviour by ingraining a lesson in them. - The way children remember information makes smacking an extremely effective form of punishment. - (Although children develop at different speeds,) All Young children are not fully rational actors. - Their mental capabilities have not fully developed, especially in young children. It is thus not always effective to try reasoning with them why something is wrong or right. - Physical pain, being a highly basic sensation, is a very good way to get the message across swiftly and effectively. - It is our natural instinct to stay away from things that cause us physical pain. - Because of their primitive brains, children learn in a different manner from adults. Young children, specifically, internalise information by associating actions with consequences. They learn by positive and negative reinforcement - to them, good actions result in good consequences, bad actions result in bad consequences. - When smacking is used as a form of discipline, young children are discouraged from misbehaving because of the consequential sting of physical pain. - Primitive system that is embedded in our genetic code. The message will get through to children.

- We are not tyrants advocating for children to mindlessly behave in a certain way without understanding why. - Smacking should not be used on its own. - When the child is older and able to think logically, parents should explain to them the rationale behind smacking them. - Therefore, in support of justifiable, effective discipline for our future generations, please go with the opposition.
