Introduction

This assignment serves as an introduction to the use of AutoCAD Map 3D for the purpose of extracting specific information from source drawings using queries as well as generating reports which will display required information in a corresponding text file. This report will provide useful information to Mr. Wallace, the Director of Public Works for the town of Springfield, who wishes to embark on a sanitary sewer maintenance program. This report provides a high level estimate which analyzes the sanitary sewer pipe network to calculate the cost associated with the necessary repairs/upgrading of the current infrastructure. The costs associated with each pipe material and their corresponding lengths (in feet) were calculated using query reports generated within AutoCAD Map 2013. The final map layout indicating the locations of sewer pipes as well as the sewer pipe data table which displays the total estimated costs associated with the maintenance of both the clay and concrete pipe systems can be found in the Appendix of this report.

Methodologies
3.1 Creating New Map Template

Upon running AutoCAD Map 3D 2013, a map drawing was required to begin this assignment. The provided drawing template (map2d.dwt) was applied to ensure any future analysis and/or image enhancement follows a common mapping and drawing standard used by Hunter Geosystems. The drawing files San_sewer.dwg, Streets.dwg, and Taxlots.dwg were attached and the current drawing was projected using the appropriate coordinate system NAD83 Oregon Statewide Lambert (Intl Feet).

3.2

Creating Drive Alias and Connecting to Source Drawings

In order to retrieve the specific information required for this assignment, a drive alias was created by connecting to the file folder which contained the three drawings San_sewer.dwg, Streets.dwg, and Taxlots.dwg. These files were added to the current drawing and a drive alias HunterRD3 was created. Creating a drive alias allows multiple users to use the same pathname for a drawing stored on a shared drive (Martin & Ellis, 2013). This procedure is displayed in Figure 2 below.

Figure 2 Creating Drive Alias

Once the drive alias was created and the drawing files were added to the map explorer, the files were activated to enable the user to access the corresponding information of Springfields sanitary sewer pipe system (Figure 3). 3

Queries of Attached Drawing Files

AutoCAD Map 2013 allows the user to execute queries which will return specific information from the attached drawing files to the current drawing. Several queries were run using different parameters such as Location, Property and Data in order to retrieve specific pipe information regarding the material of the pipe as well as the size. For the purpose of this assignment, concrete and clay pipes were examined to determine the reline costs associated with concrete pipes and the replacement costs associated with clay pipes. 3.3.1 Queries for Concrete Pipes

In order to determine the costs associated with relining the concrete pipes for Springfields Department of Public Works, certain parameters were considered during the execution of various queries to return the required information. The parameter for Location was set to ALL to examine all information in the activated drawings. The Property conditions were set by layer to retrieve information within the San_Pipes_Main layer. The Data condition was defined by Object Data specifications for which the pipe material was specified as CON for concrete. This will return all the pipes made from concrete to the current drawing, displaying this information as a single layer once the query is executed. Because there are different costs associated with relining different size pipes, queries were developed to allow the user to specify the pipe size according to the provided size requirements.

GISC9305 AutoCAD and GIS Source Drawing Queries / Report The Director of Public Works has requested an estimate of cost for the relining of concrete pipes varying from 6 to 8, 10 to 12 and 15 to 18 (all measures are imperial feet). These specifications were used to determine the data conditions for pipe size when developing the queries for concrete pipes. The data size properties were set to return the information specifically for pipes with sizes between the 6 to 8. This is displayed in Figure 4 below, which will return all pipes that are made out of concrete between the size of 6 and 8 once the query is executed.

Figure 4 Queries for Concrete Pipes between 6" and 8"

These same steps were followed to return the concrete pipes with dimensions of 10 to 12 and 15 to 18. The object data values for Size were changed according to these required dimensions when executing each query for the concrete sewer pipes. Each layer was created individually and assigned a specific colour to allow for a clear distinction between the variance of pipe material and dimensions. The parameters for Hunter Geosystems CAD and mapping standards were maintained during the creation of the map. The final map (Appendix A) displays the location of concrete sewer pipes to be relined for Springfield Oregons sanitary sewer maintenance program.

GISC9305 AutoCAD and GIS Source Drawing Queries / Report 3.3.2 Concrete Sewer Pipe Report

Reports were created to display the lengths of each of the concrete sewer pipes which required relining. These values are to be used to develop an estimate of the costs associated with relining the concrete pipes between the sizes of 6to 8, 10 to 12 and 15 to 18. The reports were created by following the same parameters for querying as mentioned above in regards to the location, property and data variables. By selecting the query mode Report, the user is prompted to specify the Output Report Options (Figure 5). This allows the user define the properties to be displayed in the report. The Length properties of the concrete pipes is added to the report template and saved to a specific folder for this assignment. The result is a text file (.txt) that contains the lengths of each concrete sewer pipe in regards to the parameters specified in the query (i.e. 6 to 8, 10 to 12 or 15 to 18).

Table 1 outlines the total cost estimate for the relining of concrete pipes within the sewer system for the town of Springfield. These figures were calculated using the values from the query reports generated for concrete pipe system. Hunter Geosystems has estimated that the total cost of relining the concrete pipe system for the sanitary sewer pipe maintenance program will be $67,551.

3.3.3

Queries for Clay Pipes

The same procedures were followed for executing the return of information for clay sewer pipes. Only the parameters were changed to reflect the specific pipe material as well as size values for retrieving information from the source drawings upon executing the query. This allowed each section of clay pipes which meet the size criteria to be displayed as a layer in the current drawing. Once a query was developed for retrieving clay pipes, the size parameters were altered accordingly to return all clay pipes of 6, 8, 10, 12 and 15 in size. Figure 6 displays the structure of the query used to gather information of clay pipes from the source drawings. Each pipe layer was created individually and assigned a specific colour to allow for a clear distinction between the variance of pipe material and dimensions throughout the drawing. The rules and parameters for Hunter Geosystems CAD and mapping standards were maintained during the creation of the map. The final map (Appendix A) outlines the location of clay sewer pipes to be replaced for Springfield Oregons sanitary sewer maintenance program.

3.3.4

Generating Reports for Clay Sewer Pipes

Reports were also generated to gather the total length of clay sewer pipes in order to develop a cost estimate for replacement these outdated sewer pipes. Following the same procedure as described in sub-section 3.3.2 of this technical report, individual reports (.txt files) were created and analyzed to provide an accurate assessment of maintenance costs for replacing clay pipes within Springfields sanitary sewer system. It was important to create a report for each of the dimensions of clay piping, as specified within the queries. Therefore, a report was developed displaying the total length of 6, 8, 10, 12 and 15 clay sewer pipes. Figure 7 displays the Output Report Options window with the Length property added to the report template which was used to generate the reports of pipe length for estimating maintenance costs.

Findings and Conclusion

Upon retrieving all of the required information from the source drawings (.dwg files), Hunter Geosystems has determined a total cost estimate for the town of Springfields sanitary sewer maintenance program. Queries were developed and executed to obtain the specific information regarding the type of sewer pipe material (concrete, clay, etc.) and the various dimensions. This also included the creation of reports which contained the length of each section of sewer piping defined by the corresponding query. The information provided in the resulting report files (.txt) were compiled and analyzed using Microsoft Excel. Hunter Geosystems has established a total cost estimate for the director of Public Works, which considers the type of material, dimension and total length of sewer piping as well as the maintenance costs associated with either relining or replacing the sanitary sewer piping network of Springfield, Oregon. It was estimated that the total cost for relining of concrete sewer pipes meeting the dimension criteria of 6 to 8, 10 to 12 and 15 to 18 will be $67,551. The estimated total cost for replacing the 6, 8, 10 12 and 15 clay sewer pipes was calculated to be $178,125. Therefore, the total estimated cost for Springfields sanitary sewer maintenance program is $245,676. All prices are without taxes. Hunter Geosystems has displayed the locations of the concrete and clay sewer pipes in the final map located in Appendix A of this technical report. The entire data set used to calculate the costs estimates associated with the sanitary sewer maintenance program for the town of Springfield can be found in Appendix B.
