AIRPORT CONSTRUCTION IN TANJUNG LABUH should or should not- SURVEY A detailed survey was conducted amongst 50 people (25

men and 25 women) living in the city of Tanjung Labuh, to evaluate the extent of sound in the vicinity of the area. The main aim to conduct this survey was to decide whether or not an airport be developed for this area. A questionnaire was prepared to determine the set objective. The analysis of the survey has been outlined hereunder:1. How long have you lived in Tanjung Labuh?

Out of the 50 people surveyed, it was seen that Tanjung Labuh is a comparatively new city where people have recently started dwelling. Majority of people 32 of them to be specific, have stayed between 6-10 yrs. in Tanjung Labuh. Only a handful of them( 14 out of 50) are residing for more than 10 years in the area. 2. Have you ever felt annoyance because of extreme noise level before?

Asking about the disturbance caused due to the extreme noise level, it was concluded that although the noise nearby does annoy people, majority of the survey sample individuals do not have a problem. This disturbance due to severe noise in and around the area can result in lack of sleep and communication, restlessness all resulting to lack of concentration among the residents. 3. What kind of disruption you experience due to noise pollution?

On asking the sample about the kind of disturbance caused by the noise in the area, all of them had a problem with sleep interference. The lack of sound sleep may result in other problems to them. This may disrupt their work concentration also. 4. What are the common factors that cause extreme noise in your area?

50 people had been surveyed to find out what is the cause of disturbance, quite surprisingly, 72% say that the vehicles are the major cause of disturbance. Although a few (28% of them)

also agree that airplane noise cause the disruption in them. Also the people in and around the Tanjung area are not at all disturbed by the noise caused by the factories in the area. 5. Do you know about the plan of developing new airport in the Tanjung Labuh airside?

On asking about the awareness of development of an airport in the area, everyone in the sample survey is aware of the fact that there is a plan of developing a new airport in the area. This clearly shows that the residents here are fully aware of the happenings in their habitat. 6.Will you agree with the operation of the airport in the future?

A mass of people surveyed have a problem with the construction of an airport in the area. Only 17 people out of 50 (i.e. 34%) people dont have a problem with the operation of the airport in future. They are against the construction of the airport in the area. The reasons for

this resistance may be resistance to change, unawareness of the developments in the world, increased chaos during and after the construction etc.

7.Give your perception towards the operation of the airport in future. Why? After going through the survey report, one can easily conclude that maximum people in and around Tanjung Labuh area are not disturbed by the noise. Also, the people who are irritated by noise in that area are more disturbed by sound caused by vehicles and not by airplanes. This lowers their sleep concentration leading to sleepless nights. Although everybody is aware of the fact that there is a plan to develop a new airport in the Tanjung Labuh Airside, 34% of the people are not convinced with this idea. In this world of globalization, where the world is shrinking infrastructural development is a must for the development of the city. According to question 1 survey the place seems to be a comparatively new. Airports affect the economic growth and development of cities and regions. An airport, in this area would definitely help in the overall growth of this small area in the fields of hotel, tourism, entertainment, retail, convention, trade and exhibition complexes; and office buildings that house air-travel intensive executives and professionals etc. This will also lead to a quick and easy link of Tanjung Labuh to the rest of the world. The close connection between airports and regional development has been noted in several studies. Therefore, since there is no distinct drawback in developing an airport in this area, in my opinion operation of airports in this region should definitely be commenced. Awareness amongst the people who are not convinced with this idea should be made aware of the same. An earnest effort should be made to educate the people of the area regarding the benefits of having an airport in this area. Also other prospective location should also be found out which may be little away from the current development area so that it may cause even lesser problems to the residents. With strong convincing power and utter dedication, An airport should be developed in the area and will then lead the area of Tanjung Labuh to the path of overall growth and development.
