Web Page
Date: March 15, 2014 Course: Comm 130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: A web page designed to showcase a personal logo I created and how I did it. Process: I created this web page using Text Wrangler. I had a pre made html and css document that I linked together and began filling it with my own content and designs. I had never done css or html before and it was a little bit of a learning process, but once I got the hang of it I really enjoyed it and had fun figuring out how to make things do what I wanted them to. I started out by changing the size of the body square in my css, moving the h1 around so that it fit with the overall design and had flow, and aligning my logo on the page on top of the transparent orange/tan square/circle image so that you could see the logo despite the floral background. I then looked up the code for making an image my background and repeating it horizontally. After I had the elements in place I filled in my 200 word body copy text in the html with the process I used to create my logo, and added a link to my photography website. I then played with the typefaces in css to have good contrasting fonts and added a black line to separate my intro from my body text to help with clarity and focal point. I found the code online for that as well. I added padding to almost all of my elements to get the right spacing between everything and to have white space and used margins as well. I matched all the colors from my logo and the floral background using the eyedropper tool in Photoshop to copy and paste the hex color into css. I learned how to create comments in my css to keep notes of what I did or what certain tags were for. Once things looked like I wanted, I used an online css validator and made sure that my codes were all good. Objective: I wanted to create a page that captured the essence of my personality and the style and taste of my photography business. I wanted to promote my business in a way that would communicate to viewers a little bit about what to expect when working with me as well as set the tone for the style of images I produce. I wanted it to be bright, fun, retro/indie, and playful; which was supposed to mimic the look and feel of my photographs. Programs: Text Wrangler, inDesign, Photoshop

business card
Date: March 1, 2014 Course: Comm 130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: A business card to display a logo I created for my photography business. Process: I started designing by looking for inspiration and for patterns and shapes that were attractive to me. Thus I found this great vintage flower background with awesome colors that fit my style. Then I found a font that I felt matched my aesthetic and added it onto the square background in illustrator. I then felt the need to include something else so I went with the circle number and fell in love with the circle and square working together. I relied heavily on opacity to help meet my needs of contrast and allowing my business name stand out. I found a nice contrasting font for the bottom to give a short note on the type of photography I do. For the back of the card I mimicked the square and circle but used the orange color from the middle circle to add variety and contrast. I was then able to include my main information on that side as well. I then saved them and placed them in a InDesign document and saved them as jpegs to be uploaded to my blog as well as printed. Objective:I wanted to have a light airy feel to match the colors and style of my photography. I wanted the vintage, hip, retro feel to match my style as well. Overall I wanted it to be attractive and give potential clients a quick idea of what they can expect from Clare Askar Photography. Programs: InDesign

Logos
Date: February 22, 2014 Course: Comm 130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: Three logo variations for the same company. Process: I used Adobe Illustrator to create these logos. I used ellipses for the bottom logo as well as font that I combined. I used the pencil tool and drew over an image of the camera and smoothed out some edges to make nice continuous lines and shapes for the top logo. For the middle logo I combined the circle idea with the camera drawing and got rid of the black lines around the camera, and made the ellipse show through. I used font in all of my logos that I felt matched well and manipulated the size and spacing of it. Everything I did was tricky and complicated, but I am very happy with how they turned out. Objective: I wanted to have a fun, youthful, clean and simple look to all of my logos to go with the type and style of images I create with my photography. Programs: InDesign, Illustrator

Stationary
Date: March 1, 2014 Course: Comm 130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: Matching letterhead and business card designed from a personally created logo for business use. For the letterhead I grabbed the front of my business card and placed it in a new document in illustrator and moved it around until I found the bottom right placement that I liked. I then looked how to connect it and balance it on the page, so I made the orange lines. I wanted to include my vital info so I added that on the bottom of the page with a nice balance to the logo. I then placed this on an InDesign document as well. Objective: I wanted to have a light airy feel to match the colors and style of my photography. I wanted the vintage, hip, retro feel to match my style as well. Overall I wanted it to be attractive and give potential clients a quick idea of what they can expect from Clare Askar Photography. photodesign
Date: February 8, 2014 Course: Comm 130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: For this I demonstrated good photography and editing skills, along with color strategically incorporated into my design along with the image. Process: I first started by looking at the colors and color schemes from the FOCUS book, and found the Tetradic color scheme appealing. I went outside around 4pm and took a nice photo of my husband that has all the key elements; focus, composition, light, and a subject. I used my Nikon D800 and then brought the image up in Photoshop to add some contrast, sharpening to the eyes, and bring up the exposure and the vibrancy a little bit. Then I designed on an 8.511 canvas incorporating my image, text, and repeating design elements like the rectangles to mimic the bricks in the background. I included my color scheme as well as the colors I used with their names and the actual colors. I used the eye dropper tool to get all of the colors to match the image really well. I created some rectangles to use in my design and played with the font size, the font type, the wording and spacing of the quote, and the alignment. I really liked the unity and overall feel my design has. Objective: I wanted to create an image that appeals to a wide audience and speaks a good thought or reminder to them. I wanted to create food for thought for people when they view this and become self reflective and maybe learn that they should be happier. I wanted it to be easy to view and digest and the color palette was crucial for this. Programs: InDesign, Photoshop

montage
Date: February 15, 2014 Course: Comm 130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: An inspirational montage made by blending two images and some text. Process: 1. I found two images of Kate that I thought would look good together and opened them in Photoshop. 2. I put a filter, motion blur, on the background image of her sliding, and masked some of it out. 3. I used the lasso tool an selected an oval around the portrait of Kate and drug it into the background photo. I made a mask on it and with a lower opacity softened or merged the edges, blurring the two images together. 4. I added text to the top of the track and used the perspective effect with color to make it fit and blend looking like it is on the top part of the luge track. 5. I then added a canvas texture filter over the entire image to create the look of the images being printed on canvas. Objective: I wanted to show how awesome Kate is and her Olympic debut. I like using the montage for this because I am able to show her in the actual act of sliding as well as show a portrait of her. I wanted it to be exciting, have motion, and be a fun poster showing her as an athlete. Programs: Photoshop

event ad
Date: February 1, 2014 Course: Comm 130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: A full-bleed color ad to promote a opportunity to swim with dolphins and support the Save the Dolphins Foundation, designed using Microsoft Word and a scanner. Process: I scanned in the illustration of the dolphin and used it as both the image and the background in my design. Based off of the image I made some sketches for what I wanted to event to be as well as how I could design it. I opened Microsoft Word and began my journey! I first created my title and headline and used a big and bold font to grab the viewers attention. I chose a curvy font so that it would mimic the curvy lines in the waves and such. Then I added the body copy and some more information about the event. Using a contrasting serif font I made it lighter and bold to stand out amongst the waves. I played with the font sizes and their positioning in order to maximize the flow, creativity, and to get the message across. I kept it pretty simple with the tools I used in the software, but I felt that just knowing how to manipulate the text boxes and type makes designing in Word a lot better. I enjoyed using Microsoft Word and I am glad that I know how to use it much better than I did before. The programs that I used for this design are: Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner, and PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter). Objective: I created an event where anyone could come to the Aquarium on that day and pay to swim with the dolphins there. I wanted the idea of swimming with a dolphin to jump out at someone and reel them into attending the event. It is a fundraiser for the Save the Dolphins Foundation and wanted that to bring out people who are looking to contribute to that specific foundation or just a good cause. As far as the designing portion I wanted it to look fun, exciting, and have the water/ beach vibe going on so I used a fun font and the analogous color scheme of greens, blues, and teals. flier
Date: January 25, 2014 Course: Comm 130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: Black and White flier to promote a Graduate Leadership Conference for Vouant Communications. Process: I first drew some sketches to get an idea of how I could create a nice design with the few vital pieces of information I needed to include. I then opened up inDesign and started to make shapes with the rectangle tool and create my design. Once I had all of the vital elements I played with the fonts, type, decorative lines and squares, etc. I made sure to think about my white space, contrasting elements, my flow, the clarity of the message, as well as the audience. I was given the image, logo, and content for this flier, but everything else was my creative design. I did many drafts of this design, and spent a lot of time refining and improving the flow, contrast, and overall shapes and message you understand as you view it. Objective: I am trying to reach college students. I feel that they can benefit the most from this conference as they are just starting out in their careers and shaping their ideas. So I emphasized Leadership for those who feel they want to improve in their leadership skills and also having a competitive edge in business for the up-and-comers. Programs: InDesign

brochure
Date: March 28, 2014 Course: Comm 130 Visual Media Instructor: Cory Kerr Description: A two-sided duplex folding brochure. Process: To start I used the camera body image I had made in Illustrator and brought it into inDesign. I duplicated it four times for the four sides of the camera: front, front inside, back inside, back. I mirrored the body for the back ones and then started adding the images and text. I tried to duplicate the inside of the camera with the film on the inside, so I created a black rectangle and added the four images onto the negative and added several white squares as the sprocket holes on the film. For the text requirement I made another black rectangle to compliment the other one and tie them together. I added white text so that it would stand out and have contrast, even with the black lines around the camera body etc. I created a new logo, which was just a type logo to showcase the name of the business, and put that on the back outside of the camera. I opened up an image in Photoshop and used the quick select wand tool to get the clipped photo so that I could wrap the text around it. After the images were sized and placed correctly an the text was looking good I was pretty much done. The last step was to try to get everything to align and allow for the flap to be cut out for the fold. Once the three sides of the back of the camera were cut I folded the one side, and then stitched the two pieces of paper together. This was a very difficult project for me as I tried to think through how everything needed to be placed and matched up. Printing was very difficult and I wanted to give up multiple times. I am please with the finished product however. Objective: An introduction to Clare Askar Photography. What this business is all about, some prices, and a sample of images to draw in clients. Programs: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
