Step 1 Start Workbench


Start ANSYS Workbench and follow the sequenced steps using the abbreviations shown below:
DC SC = Double Click with Left Mouse Button = Single Click with Left Mouse Button

Training Manual

RMB = Right Mouse Button Selection D&D = Drag and Drop = Hold Left Mouse Button down on item while dragging it to new location and then release it (i.e., Copy or Move)

Throughout these Workshops, the procedures shown are not always the only way to accomplish the desired tasks, so feel free to investigate other methods via the documentation when outside of this course
The workshops consistently use RMB in the Outline tree to access options whenever possible
Often these options can also be accessed through the Context Toolbar Sometimes these options can also be accessed using RMB in the View area

Step 4 Specify the Project Units

4.a Select MKS for the Project Units from the Units List provided 4.b Request that Native Applications in Workbench have their values be Displayed in the Project Units

Note: Engineering Data is native in Workbench, but DesignModeler and Mechanical are NOT currently (but will be in the future). Therefore, always check that the local units system is as desired.

5.c Select the + sign to the right of the AL 7039 material model to add it to the Engineering Data library. 5.d Likewise, select the + sign to the right of the Copper, Steel 1006 and Tantalum materials. Note the symbol of a book that appears indicating success.

Step 5 Define Engineering Data Material ...


5.e Go to the Engineering Data cell and note the added materials. 5.f Return to the Project Schematic 5.g Save the Project by selecting the Save As icon and Browse to the directory indicated by your instructor. Enter fragment_impact for the Project name.

7.c Assign the material AL 7039 to the Fragment_Filler part.
To access the materials stored in the Engineering Data library, SC the default material currently assigned to the part, and a small fly-out arrow will appear. SC on that arrow to list the available materials

Step 8 Edit the Model in Mechanical ...


8.e Notice the automatically defined Body Interaction. This allows a sliding interaction between the fragment and the plate (using the default Trajectory contact detection) The Fragment and the Plate are separated by a small gap (1/2 mm), so no bonded contact regions have been automatically generated (If the two parts were touching, you would have to manually delete any bonded contact regions that were automatically generated always check this)

Step 9 Set Element Size and Mesh the Model

Physics Preference = Explicit Element Size = 0.001 meters

Step 15 Start to Solve in Explicit Dynamics


15.a Select Solution in the Outline Tree and start a Solve 15.b Explicit Dynamics will start to run the simulation, but will stop immediately after writing an AUTODYN cycle zero file, because a 2D axi-symetric analysis cannot be run in Explicit Dynamics. You must use ANSYS AUTODYN to run the simulation and process results (by importing the cycle zero file created in this step)

Step 16 Create (Link to) an AUTODYN Project


16.a On the Workbench Project page, under Component Systems, drag and drop the AUTODYN component onto the Setup cell for the Explicit Dynamics (ANSYS) project. This creates an AUTODYN project whos setup is linked to the Explicit Dynamics Project 16.b Open the AUTODYN project, importing the model set up in the Explicit Dynamics project

Step 17 AUTODYN Solve Executes Automatically 17.a After executing the previous step, an AUTODYN window will appear. Press Run and the simulation set up in Explicit Dynamics (ANSYS) will start to solve However, the solution ends prematurely because mesh distortions produce a degenerate element We need to add Erosion and re-run the simulation

18.a The quickest way to re-load cycle zero is from the pull-down menu in the Plots dialog panel 18.b Press Materials on the Navigation Bar and notice that data for the four materials that were defined in Engineering Data (Explicit Dynamics) are available for modification in AUTODYN
