Global Warming

The Earth`s atmosphere acts like a greenhouse. A greenhouse is a building that creates and circulates warmth for plants that grow in warm climates, and is built with a roof and sides made of glass and other transparent materials. Compared, Earth is the same with its atmosphere working just like a greenhouse. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, and water vapor in the Earth`s atmosphere, work like a blanket. This blanket is what and how global warming has progressed throughout the years, bec oming more and more severe. It can also be called the greenhouse effect. Earth`s Greenhouse gases contribute to global warming, by increasing the temperature of the Earth`s surface. Greenhouse gases make this all possible by absorbing and then radiating heat back to Earth`s surface. This all comes from the trapping atmosphere. Susan Solomon a senior scientist, from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Boulder, Colorado, says The rise in carbon dioxide is essentially due to the burning of fuels. Susan Solomon`s words are true. That carbon dioxide comes from burning fuel, which comes from us humans. Burning fuels, is one of the many causes of past and present day, global warming.

There are numerous causes of the greenhouse effect and global warming. Some in which come naturally from the environment itself, but is provoked and not taken care of. Human activity, is one of the causes of the greenhouse effect and the increased global warming over time. This comes from burning fossil fuels like coal and gases that are deadly to the environment. Fossil fuels are also causing air pollution, by the harmful gases coming from things like our vehicles and coal burning factories, that get absorbed into the Earth`s atmosphere. This is something that increases global warming by a huge percent. Not only that, but clouds like thin cirrus and thick cumulus clouds trap these burned fossil fuels in the atmosphere which causes the Earth to heat up. Another major cause of the greenhouse effect and global warming is the use of chemical fertilizers that release oxides of nitrogen. This destroys our atmosphere faster than greenhouse gases. By using these chemicals, it also increases the process and pace of global warming today. Senior scientist Susan Solomon says But because we`ve burned a lot of fossil fuels and deforested parts of the planet, we`ve increased the amount of greenhouse gases, and as a result have changed the temperature of the planet. This quote is true because in previous years, statistics show that the Earth was cooler than it is today. Statistics have shown that global warming has increased in previous years and it still is today. Since the late 19th century, the global average-surface temperature, has risen by .6C. This factor makes the Earth`s atmosphere trap more and more heat to become unbearable sometimes. Presently, statistics show that there is 31 billion tons of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. This is contributed from all of the burned fossil fuels and many people in general. Not many people realize this and thats what makes this factor progress on. Over the

past one-hundred years, the total rise in sea level has been 17.5cm. Due to the melting ice and snow in the artic, the sea level is now causing problems for both human civilization and nature to go about on this Earth. Predictions for the next century show that Earth`s temperature is projected to rise another 2 to 11.5F. Scientists have observed and seen this in most places of the world and are now predicting it to be true. This prediction can become more serious in the next few centuries by enabling human life or any life form to live on the planet. These factors can and will continue to progress if not dealt with very soon by the human race. With all of these facts and statistics about global warming, many people start to wonder what will become of human kind and the Earth, if the Earth`s atmosphere continues on this path. One thing is that, the polar ice caps will melt, causing the sea level to rise. Animals such as polar bears, will lose their hunting grounds due to this. Not only the Polar Bear species, but many other animal species will have to look elsewhere or move inland for a new home. Another thing coming from global warming, that has to do with the water, is that the oceans will warm up and become more acidic. With the temperature increasing, the oceans salty waters will become even more acidic by its natural salt`s. Earth`s climate change has altered food availability for migratory species such as birds and insects. By this, it means that without the proper food availability in certain areas or habitats, these species will either have to move elsewhere to go and find it or adapt to a new diet which is out of the question for them. Many natural resources are in danger that are critical to wildlife survival. Again this is all because of the current climate change. This is how and the reason why many species of animals and insects are going extinct. In the past there used to be many species of animals, and with

conditions like this in the future, half of these species will be gone. But there are ways that people today can prevent global warming from progressing any further. Everybody has a chance to make a difference in their own ways. To the environment especially. Some ways such as walking or biking to places, can reduce the use of motor vehicles which can be toxic to our environment. This can also, show people nature up close and show them what their really harming besides other people. Getting involved into local clean-energy programs and other climate programs, can be other ways to help the environment. These programs are meant to get people involved into their community, and to make it a better place to be for them and others. A Common practice to reduce global warming, is mostly recycling things such as paper, plastic, and glass. Every day, newspapers, glass bottles, plastic bags, and more, are thrown away in the trash, without a care. But with the use of recycling, those things can be turned into something new and used over again. Recycling can also reduce the use of landfills which hold and pile trash over and over itself. Another common practice is by powering off electrical devices, when not in use. Devices such as an electrical lamp, television, and a computer. Electricity works by the use of power plants, which burn coal. In powering off electrical devices, it reduces the use of burning fossil fuels and can get everyone active by enjoying the outside world. This all cannot be possible if nobody knows about it. By spreading the word about what the greenhouse effect is, its harm to the environment, and how everyone can make a difference to their environment, will make people more aware of global warming.
