Exploration of the Need and Evaluation

As a jewellery designer I, Simone Doueihi has carefully decided to make this casual piece of jewellery for teenage girls. I have targeted this particular age group (13-16) because I think that I have the potential to express my personality whilst making this item of jewellery. According to the design process, I have to suit the needs of the people I am creating it for. Whilst designing this necklace there are many factors that I have to think about in order to make the perfect piece of jewellery where everybody will be pleased. Factors that I need to take in mind include Age: As stated the targeted age group is preferably 13-16 years old. Gender: Female Personality: If a teenage girl likes wearing jewellery, this most likely shows she is girly. I have chosen to make something simple in order to suit everybodys personality. Style: Girls are very particular with their style so it will be very hard to satisfy all their needs. So the idea of this necklace in my head is just something plain and easy. Interests: Whether these teenage girls enjoy playing sports or the complete opposite and love hair and makeup, this necklace will suit both sorts. Colour: The beads might be multi-coloured.

Research and Evaluation of Existing Designs

The following images that are inserted below show the type of necklace that I am interested in designing. Through researching pictures online, I have a better understanding of how my finishing product will possibly turn out.

o The images above are inspirations as to what design I am basing my necklace on. As stated in Exploration of the Need and Evaluation my choice was to create just a casual piece of jewellery as it will suit all girls whether they are a tomboy or girly girl. Therefore I will base my design on either picture 2 (beads with the cross) or picture 8 (all beaded).

Research and Evaluation of Existing Designs

1. The black cord gives the necklace a casual look I like how the beads are flower shaped Making similar beads like these out of polymer clay will challenge me which is good

I basically like the entire necklace as the charms are so aesthetical but also simple

Before placing the beads in the oven I can create a hole through them simply by using a skewer

2. The charms suit the black cord really well The beads add funk to this necklace The repetition of the beads create an easy going theme The charm is hooked on nicely I love the simplicity of the cross

I have annotated these two images which are my two favourite. I have decided to get some ideas from the necklace charms and beads which could possibly be used in some of my designs.

A Final Design with Dimensions and Materials

Case Study Section 1- Design Process

1) Read evaluating success. List the financial and personal rewards that Dinosaur designs' partners can enjoy because of their company's success. The designers in this business receive many rewards due to the companys success. Some of these include the satisfaction of being able to work with close friends, making and designing jewellery which are enjoyed by others, the impact their product has on peoples lives, being invited to charity projects , and the main financial reward is actually running your own successful business. 2) Look at the Dinosaur Designs' career path. What things indicate the company's success and popularity? Stephen, Liane and Louise all studied at the City Art Institute and got a Bachelor of Visual arts, majoring in drawing and painting. They started as a small business selling clothes and jewellery at Paddington markets then years later expanded into a worldwide company. The designs were put in vogue magazine and ever since, the companys success and popularity was largely increasing. Every time a new store opened somewhere, the three designers would start creating more items. Jewellery, clothes, homeware, glassware, range of merchandise, ceramics, dolls house furniture and more are now being manufactured by Dinosaur Designs. 3) Develop a flow chart of a design process undertaken by the team at Dinosaur Designs

4) Dinosaur Designs uses specialist designers for some aspects of their work, for example, architects and graphic designers. Compare the design process used to design Dinosaur Designs' jewellery and that used by the product designer Angelo Kotsis. What are the similarities and differences between the two processes? Dinosaur designs begin the design process for jewellery by making a prototype plasticine. Next they create the mould and cast the resin. After, colours are mixed into clear resin; items are created then left to set properly. Final touches are added and the object is complete. Angelo Kotsis begins the design process for torches by finding inspiration then brainstorms ideas as to how the torch could look. Models were created using a 3D printer and manufacturers tested them. These two processes are similar as both designers have a solid plan and stick to it so their individual objects can be fantastic quality. Theyre different because Dinosaur designs have an idea as to how the jewellery is going to turn out but Angelo Kotsis needs to go searching for inspiration in order to receive ideas about the look of the torch.

5) The Dinosaur Designs team are passionate about their work. They use a particular language to communicate their process of design, for example, hand-felt and finessing. Select these words and in the context of the passage, discuss what the designer means by them. Hand-felt: related to how something feels in the hand. The designers talk about how their pieces of jewellery are very hand-felt meaning they create jewellery in order to suite the costumers needs. Therefore the items dont only look pleasing, but theyre comfortable for people to wear. Finessing: making something better. The designers have a great ability to refine products to make them even greater then what they were. They do this so the customers arent wearing a piece of jewellery that is completely opposite to the fashion. This shows that the designers are very passionate as theyre willing to go that bit further in order for their customers to be satisfied.

Section 2- Factors including design

1) Visit the Gallery of work. Touch, feel and look are important to Dinosaur Designs. Look at three images and describe them in terms of the elements of design, such as line, colour and texture.

Resin inlay jewellery: Dinosaur designs use a range of elements to create their objects such as rectangular shapes which are made from straight and curved lines. The maroon colours and transparent glass allows us to see through the resin.

Louis Vuitton chess set: Dinosaur designs were very creative when making this chess set. They have incorporated make-up and other girly things in place of the chess pieces and the Louis Vuitton colours and patterns for the case.

Glass products: These vases dont only look beautiful, but theyre functional as well and can be used in either a modern or traditional household. The bright colours and unique shapes make the vases look more appealing.

2) Dinosaur Designs manufactures all their resin pieces in their own studio. What kinds of Occupational Health & Safety practices might they have to consider for employees working in a studio or workshop environment? Dinosaur designs legally have to protect the health and safety of their workers and other people who could be affected by the process making resin. This is commenced by creating a healthy working environment, adequate facilities, adequate information instruction and training, substances in a safe condition and harmless systems of work.

Section 3- Roles of designers

1) The Dinosaur Designs team received training in the visual arts as well as professional art studies. Suggest an alternative career path that might give you the skills necessary for designing objects and/or jewellery. An alternative career path that gives you the skills needed for designing jewellery includes: Crafting- this provides you with the knowledge of designing, creating and repairing objects that have functional and artistic qualities. This includes working with wood, metal, glass, leather, ceramics and more.

2) Jewellery design is a design specialisation of the area of study: Products. What other design specialisations does Dinosaur Designs work in? Dinosaur Designs not only work with jewellery but also design exceptional homewares which are loved by customers due to their unique, creative and artistic features.

3) List some of the reasons people wear jewellery. Describe your favourite piece of jewellery and the reasons it is important to you. People wear jewellery for various reasons as it might symbolise something, they could wear it as a fashion statement or sometimes to flaunt their wealth. My favourite piece of jewellery is a gold necklace with 3 charms: A cross, picture of Mary (mother of God) and a cedar tree. This is important to me as it was my grandmothers who passed it on to me.

4) Identify the contribution Dinosaur Designs makes to the improvement of everyday life. Dinosaur designs make a huge contribution to the improvement of everyday life. Firstly and most importantly they inspire youth to dream big, think positive, and strive for something great. Their successful business have created jewellery which becomes precious to people and might symbolise something significant in their lives. They create beautiful homewares which add style and funk to peoples homes.

Section 4- Generating Ideas

1) Stephen Ormandy of Dinosaur Designs describes the importance of sketching for generating ideas. Practice your sketching skills for your next project. Ideas and sketches shown on pages 5 & 6.

2) Identify some of the methods used by Dinosaur Designs to generate creative ideas. They spent most Friday nights in their parents kitchens painting fabrics and making jewellery which helped generate ideas. The 3 talented designers also looked at the latest fashion and adapted their products to suit the market. By doing this they found inspiration and therefore produced new and creative ideas.

Section 5- Selects, analyses, presents and applies research

1) Experimenting and testing of design ideas was important for the development of Dinosaur Designs' first innovative products for Paddington markets. Describe the experimentation and testing that was carried out. Whilst Dinosaur Designs were selling items at Paddington markets, they would test their products based on popularity. All 3 designers established that their jewellery was a big hit which many customers bought and loved, therefore they started creating more jewellery but also adding hand-painted resin.

2) Dinosaur Designs are influenced to a certain extent by current trends. What sources of information would be particularly useful for jewellery designers? In order for jewellery designers to create ideas they need to gain inspiration from art, painting, history, culture, sculpture, reality and the natural world. This way when developing designs the idea is triggered into their head straight away and can be sketched, created and tested.

Section 6- Mixed material technologies

1) If you were to design a small pendant how could it be mass produced? Research the different ways in which you could produce multiple copies of this object? There are not many ways to mass-produce a pendant, but the most common way is using a 3D printer: you are able to design a pendant using google SketchUp or another program then simply print the object. Gaining a team of workers to help with the final touches of the product will make the process easier as rather than the designer spending most of their time as a one-person production line, they can be creating new ideas. In order to do this they will need heaps of tools and supplies in order to make several copies of the pendant. Depending on what scale you need to mass-produce, there are also machines which prototype pendants therefore multiple copies are made. This process is only used by worldwide jewellery businesses. 2) For the small pendant research how it can be finished. How does it affect the visual appeal of the object? The pendant will not turn out perfect after it has been mass-produced. The team of designers who are making this will eventually slack off towards the end therefore every pendant will not look great. Once the charm has been created the designers could do simple things in order for it to be finished, some of these include: painting, glazing, beading, wiring etc. The visual appeal of this object is affected, but in a positive way. The pendant went from looking not finished and cheap to something aesthetical and pricy.
