Art/Science Broadvision Proposal for Exhibition

Members of the group: Jed Welland Jonathan Russell Arnoldas Kukulskis Tobin Symmons Holly Recardo Pongthorn Freeman Thulangana Ganeshan An overview of what we intend to include in the exhibition: The artwork that we propose to exhibit will be in a museum-like format. The ultimate goal being an array of different artworks/ experiments that relate to our topic of Body Adaptation: Life Without Light. This will focus around three key areas of interest: Synaesthesia, Decellurisation and Sensory Experimentation. The fictitious future that we aim to present is one in which there is a lack of light. The process from now to this point in the future would involve a blockage of light by an ash cloud caused by a series of volcanic erruptions, much like how the dinosaurs became extinct. The overall aspect we will be showing is how life depends on light and if it is possible for the human race to survive without the sun as a resource. Synaesthesia is a focus as it is currently registered as a disability. However in this fictitious future, sight would either be a strenuous task or impossible. This could result in a human evolving without eyes, much like salamanders that currently live in caves. The use of synaesthesia could be used to great effect as it associates different senses together for a supposed benefit. In this sense, it is not a disability but is a vital ability for survival. As the light diminishes, skin pigmentation would become less coloured, again similar to cave dwelling animals. This has influenced our decision about using decellurisation. With this chemical process we aim to show how human skin pigmentation could be affected by the lack of light. In addition to the lack of sight, sensory experiments have become a main area of research in order to find out how the human senses would react to this new living condition. We intend to exhibit the following as part of our museum experience: Projected videos of size 2mx1.5m: -Sensory experiments that we have undertaken and filmed. -A computer animated sculpture of our future human. -An experimental video demonstrating the effects of certain types of synaesthesia. -Time Lapse of the decellurisation process. Physical installations: -A decellurised heart in a jar of water, with colours being pumped through the heart, on a plinth of measurements 0.5mx1.5mx0.5m.

-A clay sculpture of the future human on a plinth 0.5mx1.5mx0.5m. -A portrait made of decellurised bacon of measurements 0.5mx1m (I feel this should be a portrait of our future human?) Live experiments: -A live demonstration of decellurising taken over several days in a space 5mx3mx4m. -An interactive sensory experiment in a large blacked out room will require speakers. Why we intend to do this: We have decided on these components to be exhibited in a museum like format so that the viewers/audience are able to walk around the exhibit and chose which order the events happened in themselves instead of our initial idea of having a film where there would only be one order which is given to them. We felt this is more interactive and will therefore engage the audience better. The Projected videos, physical installations and the live sensory experiment will be able to be on display/on going for the audience throughout the whole exhibition. However our live decellurisation experiment will only last a few days before the process is complete so this is more of a temporary piece which will hopefully attract people to come back again to see this happen. Once the process has been completed it can either just be a display or it can be removed, but we will have a time lapse of the process being displayed throughout the exhibition for those that miss the live experiment. 3D Visualisation
