CSR ACTIVITIES
Water Conservation Water conservation remains a key element of our sustainability agenda. We are committed to manage water in an efficient and responsible way across all our operations. In 2011, we undertook a detailed water footprint exercise in plant operations and water recharges in the communities which was assured externally by an independent third party. The results showed that we are water positive by a factor of two. We have continued our efforts at utilizing this pristine resource prudently with an aim to make water available to all. We have stepped up measures for further reduction in water consumption per ton of product together with augmentation in rain water harvesting in plant areas/townships/ mine pits and structures in nearby villages and in community. Climate Change We aspire to be a Carbon Smart company. As a major cement manufacturer, climate change mitigation and footprint conscious growth has always been integral to ACLs Sustainability strategy. The Company undertakes climate mitigation initiatives guided by its Climate Change Mitigation Policy and has embraced the Reduce Engage Influence concept.

The impact minimization strategy involves:

Reduction in Clinker factor; Improving thermal energy efficiency and process technology; Optimizing fuel composition, including the use of wastes as fuel and Waste Heat Recovery.

The company has assessed our carbon footprint & offsets for 2010 and verified them in line with ISO 14064:2006 by an independent third party. We have drawn a Roadmap to embark upon a low carbon growth path for the future.

PEP System The Plant Environment Profile (PEP) is the Companys internal environment performance assessment system. The assessment is carried out yearly based on a detailed and standardized Online Questionnaire, which acts as environmental information carrier. The questionnaire covers key elements of ISO 14001 along with key performance indicators covering a wide range of topics - including atmospheric emissions, energy and material consumption, water, and waste and quarry management. At the end of the assessment Environment Performance Index Score is calculated and used for rating plants internally, as well as to benchmark against the Groups other operating plants globally.
