A PC5250 printer session can be used to print an OS/400 spool file to a virtual printer that can be accessed from

the PC. This includes printers that are directl attached to the PC and printers that are attached to the net!or". Of course# there are e$ceptions to this. %n &eneral# if ou can print to the printer from a particular PC ou should be able to print throu&h a PC5250 printer session to the same printer. The follo!in& !a s can be used to confi&ure a PC5250 printer session# each !ith their o!n benefits' ( Configure the PC5250 printer session to use a Windows printer driver. This is the easiest !a to confi&ure a PC5250 printer session) ho!ever# it &ives ou onl a small amount of control over ho! the output is printed. This is done b selectin& File# Printer Control# Text on the menu bar and clic"in& on the Options or Advanced button *dependin& on the version of Client Access/400 ou are usin&+. 2 Configure the PC5250 Printer ession to use a Printer !efinition Ta"le #P!T$. This &ives ou control over ho! the output is printed b allo!in& ou to cop and modif a Printer ,efinition Source -ile *P,-+ and then create our o!n P,T file. . Configure the PC5250 printer session to use %ost Print Transfor& #%PT$. This causes the conversion from the SCS printer data stream of the AS/400e or iSeries 400 s stem to the data stream for the printer to be done on the AS/400e or iSeries 400 s stem. This is especiall beneficial if several different printer emulation pac"a&es are bein& used *for e$ample# PC5250# /012A/400# 3S-# and others+ because all of the output !ould loo" ver similar. This also provides control over ho! the output is printed b allo!in& ou to retrieve# modif # and create our o!n 3or"station Customi4ation Table *3SCST+. o&e 'nfor&ation A"out pecif(ing a Wor)station '! PC5250 printer sessions support device namin& *re5uestin& a particular OS/400 device description name+ b specif in& a !or"station %, under Communication 6 Confi&ure. %t is recommended that ou specif a particular !or"station %, for our PC5250 printer sessions so ou can rel on it al!a s havin& the same name. Other!ise# our printer session could connect !ith one device description name one da and a different device name the ne$t da . %f a particular name is used all the time# that name can be specified in a user profile or a printer file in order to direct output to that particular printer. The !or"station %, must follo! the same rules as an other OS/400 device description' o must be (0 characters or less o must start !ith an alphabetic character *A78+ o the remainin& characters can be an alphabetic character *A78+# a numeric character *079+# :;:# :<:# :=:# :>: or :.:

%f the PC5250 printer session is confi&ured over a TCP/%P connection and a 3or"station %, is not specified# the OS/400 printer device description name !ill default to one of the :?PA,@A$$$$: device descriptions. These are normall reserved for T@BC@T displa sessions# but if device namin& is not used# one of the e$istin& :?PA,@A$$$$: device descriptions !ill be chan&ed from a displa device description to a printer device description. %f the PC5250 printer session is confi&ured over an SCA connection *such as CS//outer+ and a 3or"station %, is not specified# the OS/400 printer device description name !ill default to the SCA connectionDs Bocal B0 name follo!ed b the Short Session %,. -or e$ample# if ou are usin& the CS//outer and the Bocal B0 is set to *O*# then the printer device description !ill default to *O*A if it connects as session A# *O** if it connects as session 2# and so on. Therefore# the order that the printer session is started *compared to our displa sessions+ could chan&e the device description name that it has. Configuring a PC5250 Printer ession (a %f usin& /.(. CA/400 for 3indo!s 95/9E/CT or later# ou can brin& up a ne! PC5250 printer session b clic"in& on the 3indo!s 95# 3indo!s 9E or 3indo!s CT tart button then selectin& Progra&s+ '*, A -.00 Client Access+ Accessories and then tart or Configure ession. (b %f usin& /.(2 CA/400 for 3indo!s 95/CT or earlier# ou can brin& up a ne! PC5250 printer session b clic"in& on the 3indo!s 95 or 3indo!s CT tart button then selectin& Progra&s+ and Client Access+ double clic"in& on the Accessories icon and then double clic"in& on the tart or Configure ession icon. 2 At this point ou !ill &et a PC5250 dialo& bo$ !ith some information about confi&urin& our PC5250 session. Are (ou sure2. Clic" on the O/ button. This causes PC5250 to disconnect the displa session and reconnect as a printer session usin& the !or"station %, that ou specified.

5 Hour PC5250 session should no! connect to our AS/400e or iSeries 400 s stem and create a printer device description. Once it has done all of this it should sho! ou the Printer tatus popup dialo& bo$ !ith the 3ead( and On14ine li&hts turned on.

5 Select File+ Printer etup on the PC5250 printer sessionDs menu bar to brin& up the Printer etup panel. Clic" on the appropriate 3indo!s printer driver# clic" on the etup button to brin& up the printer driver settin&s# clic" on the O/ button to e$it the printer driver settin&s !ithout ma"in& an chan&es# and then clic" on the O/ button to e$it the Printer etup panel.

I Select File 5 ave As on the menu bar to save the chan&es. Jive the printer session profile an appropriate name *for e$ample printer.!s# prt05.!s# p5.!s or FohnPrt.!s+ and specif a description *such as Printer ession+ if desired# then clic" on the O/ button.

Configure the PC5250 Printer ession to 8se a Windows Printer !river At this point# the PC5250 printer session is alread confi&ured to use the 3indo!s printer driver. %t is recommended that ou test this out before decidin& !hether to confi&ure the PC5250 printer session to use a Printer ,efinition Table *P,T+ or Gost Print Transform *GPT+. 0suall # the decidin& factor is ho! Gost Print Transform is an OS/400 function that converts an OS/400 spooled file *in either the MSCS or MA-P,S data stream+ into an ASC%% printer data stream. This can be used in conNunction !ith most printer emulation soft!are and hard!are. One of its benefits is that it can create the same loo" and feel !hen printin& throu&h variet of printer emulation soft!are and hard!are. -or instance# if ou have printers connected to some PCs runnin& 3S- under Client Access for ,OS !ith @$tended 1emor # others runnin& /012A/400 under Client Access for 3indo!s ..(# others runnin& PC5250 under Client Access/400 for 3indo!s 95/9E/CT and still others connected to the BAC !ith an %P address# ou can use Gost Print Transform !ith all of these. The output !ill loo" ver similar across all of the ASC%% printers. Some printer emulation soft!are *such as 3S- and PC5250+ re5uire that Gost Print Transform *GPT+ is specified in the printer session profile. 3hen the printer session connects to the AS/400e or iSeries 400 s stem# the emulation soft!are automaticall chan&es the OS/400 printer device description to reflect the settin&s made in the printer session profile. Other printer emulation soft!are *such as /012A/400+ and all non7PC hard!are connections re5uire ou to manuall chan&e the OS/400 printer device description.
