The NSM Coastal Defence System (NSM CDS) is designed for high precision strike missions against high threat targets or highly defended targets at sea or on land up to 200 km and above. The NSM CDS is a high performance ground based coastal defence system. Its unique features with net centric architecture, networked enabled multiple simultaneous engagement and over the horizon (OTH) targeting capabilities combined with the unique NSM target recognition, shapes a highly potent and vast SSM system for the future. The system can be closely integrated and adapted to a countrys adjacent weapons and command and control systems, expands the defended area and enhances the total fighting capability of the force. The NSM CDS is composed of the following major items: The Fire Distribution Centre (FDC) providing Battle Management Command Control Communication Computers and Information (BMC4I) Sea surveillance and tracking radar - customer selectable (optional) The Naval Strike Missile (NSM) Launcher Fire unit, a canister protected weapon platform with the NSM missile The NSM missile has unique capabilities compared to legacy anti-ship cruise missiles. The missile has been designed to ensure a high probability of hit in the anticipated challenging naval scenarios for the 2010-2020 timeframe and beyond. The FDC is the central integrating element for the NSM CDS system. The FDC is based on the proven BMC4I FDC used in the NASAMS System. A conside able number of FDCs have been delivered in different configurations to several NATO countries and the USA. The FDC is vehicle independent. S ea and Land M I ss I O ns The primary missions for NSM CDS are maritime interdictions against sea targets from small and light ships made of glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) to large naval combatants like destroyers and frigates and ships with thick hull like icebreakers. Secondly, land targets are handled by the NSM CDS. The land attack capability is primarily based on use of the military GPS. Typical land targets are stationery, soft targets like ha boring depot buildings, command and control facilities, sensor sites and airing defence sites. Ships secured alongside jetty are categorized as a land target, enabling a high precision harbour attack capability. The main core nodes in the network are the FDCs, to which any sensor or launcher can connect. The network of up to 4 FDCs establishes a single integrated maritime picture enabling and enhancing a common sitational awareness. N et W O r K E n G aG ement C apa B I L I t Y Each of the FDCs can, when authorized, locally engage up to 12 different targets or use up to 12 missiles against the same target in a salvo. However does the network en able a coordinated engagement capability. Through a senior FDC, the mechanisms to plan and control up to 48 NSM engagements simultaneously against up to 48 different targets, is possible. The network further utilizes the NSM embedded features for different salvo sizes per target and also the possibility for simultaneous time on target when using salvo engagements for maximum attrition. F L e X I B L e CO nf I G urat I O n The NSM CDS systems modularity in both hardware and software ensures a costeffective focus on system growth in the areas of Battle Management Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence (BMC3I), other sensors and other weapons. With the open architecture, the FDC provides future system configuration flexibility. Different software modules can easily be changed or replaced without interfering with the other modules. InterOperaBILItY a KeY FDC CapaBILItY One of the more powerful capabilities in the FDC is its functional interoperability with complementary weapon systems and the adaptability to existing legacy as well as to new national tactical data links and interface message protocols. This is achieved through the modular and open architecture software utilized in the system.
