What is University education for?

Being freshman at the University of Bucharest, I have recently dealt with the student life and I can confess , fom what I have experienced so far, that it implies a new lifestyle which means that it requires full-time devotion, but also has its unmatched advantages. To begin with, it is very important for the students who graduate high-schools to know that University doesnt mean at all what they expect and it doesnt compare at any rate with high-school education. In other words, high-school can be considered as four preparatory years for what expects us at the end of them. According to Anthon Chekhov : The University brings out all abilities, including incapability. . I stongly agree with this quote as University education means not only learning theoretic things and cramming for exams, but it is also supposed to polish our character, to make us aware of our imperfections and weaknesses in order that we can be able to change and make a personal development. One may say that University is objective education, this comming in comparison with the education provided so far, where the teachers could be easily touched and have sympathies among the students. In comparison to this, at University everybody is treated as equal, not because teachers are intentionally rough and ice-hearted, but because University is about preparing us for the real life, where nobody cares where you come from and how pretty you are; the only thing that represents interest is your working potential and proffesional skills. Thus, this is the right place and moment to be put face to face with our flaws because we still have time to correct this drawbacks that in the very near future can prevent us from obtaining an approval for a job interview. On the one hand, University education is also about learning to accept criticism and tough remarks and fighting to demonstrate that we can develop ourselves by learning from all that has been noticed to us. However reciving praises , appreciations and encourages is not excluded, and that is one of the bright sides of studying, which makes worth all the struggle and keeps us going. Robert J. Kibbee s a y s : The quality of a university is measured more by the kind of student it turns out than the kind it takes in. This line shows very clear the aim of University education, which is building up new characters, strong personalities, able to face the everyday difficulties of life, in other words some proffesional successful people. It is all about the process of becoming somebodies than who were we before. Its the paving of our path to a bright future which makes worth all the struggle and sacrifices. Its a travel through bad and good moments, when we learn from our mistakes and gain life experience. We learn to be balanced, reliable, stable, devoted and serious. This are the main characteristics that we achieve throughout this years. In addition, the thing which has to be remembered as a student is that you are never alone, if you need something, advices or help you have to fight to obtain it. Things are not Page 1 of 2

anymore like in high-school where you had everything you needed right in front of your nose. This is not easy and comfortable at all but it has an important effect: it teaches us to become independent people, who can manage to solve their issues on their own. We are treated as grown ups, and we must learn behaving like ones because we are now on our own in a world full of obstacles and challenges. Therefore, teachers should help their studends as much as they can and encourage them, because they are the only support they can find. I think that it is never too late to take up an University programme. No matter the age, the thirst for knowledge should not be opressed by any circumstance. Nowadays we can find many advicing programmes or meetings where one can recive advices and decide what is more suitable for him and choose his study options. Being available a wide range of specialisations, it is not that difficult to study whatever you like, according to your preferences and interests. My personal opinon is that is not a good idea to choose not to continue with the University studies, because nowadays the employers have high demands, and also many options to choose from. It is very important to have skills to make a good impresion in an interview but also to demonstrate our high level of intelligence. Moreover, the competition is so rough that we really need to have an impressive educational background to be noticed in order to obtain a good job. On the other hand, the University not only teaches us to become some proffesionally experienced persons but also gives us the time of our lifes. There are so many beatiful things regarding the students life that one cannot say that its extremely exhausting or that so much effort is in vain. What is more, i think that Robert Goheen w a s t o t a l l y r i g h t w h e n h e s a i d : University is a wonderful opportunity to find out not just much more about the world, but much more about yourself, too.. Besides a strong education, the University also offers us this precious gift: friends, parties and unforgetable moments. This is the time to enjoy the life and not hesitate to have fun as much as we can because this moments will not come back again and we have to cherish every single moment. Is about learning to appreciate the persons in our lifes, and see who our true friends are and support us at tough times.

To draw a conclusion, University education is not only for intelectual development but also for the emotional one. We learn to have moral virtues and become prepared to face the real life and deal with any obstacles that may occur in our path to succes. Thus we become respectable pesons, with a bright future , career and admirable family.
