Date: 11 April 2014 Subject: Library Media Program Evaluation To: Our Principal and Building Administration From:

Mrs. Bates and Mrs. Britt

Introduction: This memo is regarding the results of the GLMA/GLA 2013 Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric that we used to evaluate our school library media center program. Findings: Overall, the media center program rated a proficient rating. Exemplary ratings were given in the areas of: o Resources supporting and encouraging reading, viewing, and listening, services provided to students with disabilities o The employment of a full time media specialist o Square footage based on FTE o The utilization of streaming video and other technologies throughout the building o The availability and use of online information and resources o Current local board approved policy Discussion: Main Analysis: As stated above, the overall results were evaluated as proficient. The student achievement and instruction criteria, including the integration of information literacy standards, the collaboration of the media specialist with teachers, the use of professional library media center staff in teaching roles, the routine assessment of student achievement were all graded as proficient. The two standards noted above received an exemplary rating. Category two, staffing, was proficient in regards to staffing of a full time media specialist and two clerks. Category three-facilities, access, and resources, was proficient in the flexibility of the library schedule and exemplary in all other regards. Category four-administrative support- was proficient in supplying a system media contact and the existence of a school advisory committee. The only basic ratings on the whole evaluation occurred here in this category. Number 15 in category 4 states: Administrative staff support at both the school and district levels is essential for the development

of a strong library media program. The basic rating achieved means that the school principal provides support to the library media program and makes time to meet with the Library Media Specialist occasionally. The other basic rating came from number 18 in the same category-Each local school system shall spend 100% of the funds designated for the library media center costs. The basic rating means this: the library media program receives an allocation for expenditures every year, this meets the minimum expenditure requirements. Further improvement steps will be discussed in the next section of this memo. Category 5-staff development received a proficient rating and category 6-other received a proficient in the area of instruction and promotion of GALILEO for students and teachers as an online tool. Recommendations: For the areas identified as basic, here are steps to improve the next rating to proficient or exemplary Number 15: Administrative staff support at both the school and district levels is essential for the development of a strong library media program. Step 1: Meet with the Media Specialist on a regular basis (biweekly) to discuss what is going on in the media center and how the administration can be of support. Step 2: Give the Media Specialist time to present at staff or grade level meetings to give teachers an idea of what to integrate and how to integrate it. Step 3: Be a voice for the media center and advocate its resources to teachers, students, and parents alike. Number 18: Each local school system shall spend 100 percent of the funds designated for library media center costs. Step 1; Allow extra room in the budget for media expenditure Step 2: Allocate certain fundraiser funds (book fairs, holiday fundraisers, PTA fundraisers, etc.) to go to the media center for help with purchases Step 3: Sit down with the media specialist and media advisory committee to develop some long-range goals for the media center and how those might be financially supported (budget, fundraisers, grants, etc.) With these steps taken it would move the rating on the next evaluation to a proficient rating or an exemplary rating.

To move one of the proficient ratings to an exemplary here are some steps. Lets look at the library media advisory committee. Step 1: Meetings are to be held at regular intervals Step 2: In addition to evaluation and planning the committee discusses and approves of library policies, materials, and budget. Step 3: The committee meets and reviews these policies, materials, and budget annually after they are established, making the needed changes.
