M&AE 3272: Course Objectives

Use destructive and non-destructive methods to experimentally determine a variety of mechanical properties and performance measures for various engineering materials. Understand how to use industry-developed Standards for materials testing. Develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering instrumentation, including the design of systems for measuring displacement, force and strain. Design and fabricate a transducer and integrate into a measurement system using computerized data acquisition. Instrument a component of a dynamic mechanical system using the engineering instrumentation fundamentals developed in this course. Become familiar with using 3-D finite element modeling software in the analysis of dynamic mechanical systems and compare the results with experimental data. Provide a survey of different engineering measurements systems and experimental techniques.

M&AE 3272: Mechanical Property and Performance Laboratory How to get an A or A+ in MAE 3272
You complete all Lab Reports with care, and address all the points that are asked for in the Handouts and in the manner discussed in lecture - and up-loaded on-time. Your Electronic Lab Notebook is neatly kept and it contains a clear record of what measurements you made and what data you collected - all recorded prior to or during the Lab period - and the processing procedures that you used the results of which constitute your Lab Report. You are an active participant in your group and the course.
M&AE 3272 WSachse; 1/2014; 11

M&AE 3272: Mechanical Property and Performance Laboratory

Grading and Assessment: Lab Reports are due at the time indicated in lecture and on the Handout. Late hand-ins will not be accepted. Grading Errors: If you believe an error was made in your grade, you should submit a written request for a regrade to your TA. The request should be as specific as possible so that it can be discussed during the courses weekly instructor/TA meeting. No requests can be accepted after two weeks.

Laboratory Notebooks are an essential part of this course.
Each student will be invited to login to the WEB-based Electronic Notebook on LabArchives.com which will be your on-line repository for lab instructions, data, measurement results, data processing and final report.

Notebooks will be reviewed (randomly) during the term for evaluation: Outstanding, Good, Mediocre, Bad, Ugly .
Outstanding: Clear description of the measurements made; good organization of the data; data are clearly labelled and conclusions clearly stated. Good: Not quite as perfect as the above. Mediocre: Poor description of the measurements and unclear or scattered presentation of results. Bad: Incomplete information; Data files not clearly identified. No description of the what measurements were made. Graphs of data are missing or ineffective (no labels; units, etc.) Ugly: Data files are not clearly identified. No way to follow what was done in lab. Messy. The Notebook is pretty much useless.

Individual and Group Work: Youll be working in groups during most labs. In the Module 1 youll collect and share data with other students in your Lab section, but complete the analysis on your own. In Modules 2 and 3, you will work with a group to complete the projects. Lab groups will be assigned at the beginning of the 2nd Module. All uploading and processing of files in your Electronic Notebook should be done by you. In addition, you will be responsible for understanding all aspects of each lab module and should expect to be questioned about them during the Lab Sections and Project Demonstrations. Group work will be assessed through the use of peer evaluations and TA observation.
M&AE 3272 WSachse; 1/2014; 15

Missed Labs: You must obtain permission from the instructor at least one week prior to missing a lab. In the case of an emergency you must bring documented proof on the emergency to the instructor. Makeup work will be coordinated through the instructor with lab TAs. Lab Swapping: Lab swapping sheet will be on the door to 108 Upson for those looking for someone to swap labs with. Need to confirm switch with Nanette Peterson and both TAs. Additional lab times will be announced if needed to complete projects.
