SKF BeyondZero consists of two simultaneous goals: Reduce the negative environmental impact from our own operations and those of our suppliers; and Innovate and offer our customers new technologies, products and services with enhanced environmental performance characteristics. To date, we have been quite successful with SKF BeyondZero. Between 2006 and 2011 while our business grew by 25% we were able to reduce the total energy requirements of our manufacturing operations by 10%. Furthermore, in the same period, we have reduced the greenhouse gas emissions, specically CO2 from our own operations by 25%. Now it is time to share our successes. Through our SKF BeyondZero portfolio we dene, measure and drive the positive side of our SKF BeyondZero strategy from our customers perspective. We develop and offer products, services and solutions that help our customers address environmental challenges for the sake of this generation and future generations. Our understanding of the environmental impact of a product through its life cycle (from raw material extraction and manufacturing, through use and end of life) drives the design and selection of products and solutions to be included in the SKF Beyond Zero portfolio.

To the left is an illustrative example of the scores of greenhouse gas emissions (specically CO2) associated with different stages in a product life cycle. SKF is continuously working to provide solutions that reduce generation of CO2 at every stage.
The Power of Knowledge Engineering delivers customer solutions with signicant environmental benets
Drawing on ve technology areas and application-specic expertise amassed over more than 100 years, we bring innovative environmental solutions to our customers [OEMs and end-users] in every major industry worldwide. These ve technology areas are 1) bearings and units, 2) seals, 3) lubrication systems, 4) mechatronics (combining mechanics and electronics into intelligent systems), and 5) a wide range of services, from 3-D computer modelling, advanced condition monitoring, and reliability and asset management services. The SKF BeyondZero portfolio spans these ve technologies and all industries where we are present. Whether we help enable a green technology like wind, or reduce the impact of a conventional process like steel production, our aim is the same to reduce environmental impact. The SKF BeyondZero portfolio includes solutions ranging from low friction bearings and seals to electro-mechanical actuators and all SKF products and solutions for renewable energy. SKF Rotor Positioning Bearings enable Stop-Start, which reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for micro-hybrid cars. In terms of CO2 emission reduction, this solution saves 5 g CO2 per km, corresponding to 73 kg CO2 per year (based on an annual mileage of 14 500 km).
SKF ConRo, a fully-sealed roll line unit for continuous casting operations in the steel industry, reduces CO2 emissions by an estimated aver age of 1.5 tons per roll per year. In a continuous casting machine with 400 rolls, this means an annual CO2 reduction of approximately 600 tons. SKF Energy and Sustainability Management services help companies reduce energy use through an extensive, plant-wide assessment that identifies high-energy use areas within an operation.
Certain technologies or sectors are included in the portfolio because it is broadly acknowledged that they displace or replace more environmentally damaging infrastructure or equipment. Accordingly, the products, solutions and services provided to wind, solar, tidal power and electric vehicles are automatically included in the portfolio.
The SKF BeyondZero portfolio To be included in the SKF BeyondZero portfolio, solutions must deliver or enable signicant environmental performance improvements. For those solutions not included in the SKF BeyondZero portfolio, SKF has developed procedures and approaches for designing and producing all of its products in a way that reduces environmental impact wherever and whenever feasible. There is no standard method for companies to calculate environmental benets, such as reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, from their products and services. Any statements in this publication concerning environmental impacts, as well as cost savings and revenue increases, are based on results experienced by SKF customers and/or based on internal calculations by SKF personnel and do not constitute a guarantee that any future results will be the same.
