- Ozone can be both good and bad because the "bad" ozone is an air pollutant that is harmful to breathe and it damages crops, trees and other vegetation. It is a main ingredient of urban smog. "Good" ozone protects life on Earth from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. 2: What is happening to the good ozone layer? - The "good" ozone is gradually being destroyed by man-made chemicals referred to as ozone-depleting substances (ODS), including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), halons, methyl bromide, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform. 3: How much damage can 1 Chlorine atom do? is lower, closer to us because toxins and pollutants get trapped. Ozone depletion is the destruction of the upper atmospheric layer of ozone gas, caused by substances formed from breakdown of ozone depleting substances.
