NOTES ON RUNNING THE PROGRAM DUCTSIZE

The ductsize Excel workbook has four sheets: Input, Report, Friction Factor ( heet !", and #ew $uct ize ( heet %"& This pro'ra( is oriented toward the experienced desi'ner who has alread) learned how to size ductwork and esti(ate external static pressure usin' the e*ual friction (ethod as described in the + ,R+E Handbook, %--. Funda(entals, /hapter %!& It is assu(ed that the desi'ner has laid out his duct plan and onl) needs to size the se'(ents and deter(ine the external static pressure seen b) the air handler& #ote that there is an exa(ple pro0ect built in to the pro'ra(& The exa(ple follows the duct la)out shown on the web site& tud) the la)out and the exa(ple proble( to understand how the pro'ra( works& +s )ou (ake )our own inputs, )ou will o1erride the exa(ple inputs& I su''est that )ou preser1e a cop) of the exa(ple for reference, and also as a spare in case )ou accidentall) da(a'e the spreadsheet )ou are workin' on& 2ou can cop) the entire file, and assi'n it a na(e in relation to )our specific pro0ect& Follow the directions on the input sheet& That is, set up )our duct into suppl) and return se'(ents, nu(bered se*uentiall)& The se'(ents should follow the path that )ou expect to be the critical path, that is, the path that will result in the hi'hest external static pressure (e&s&p&"& If )ou ha1e a co(plex duct la)out, with (an) (ain branches, )ou (a) ha1e to run the pro'ra( for (ore than one path to find the hi'hest e&s&p& & The suppl) se'(ents should start at the air handler outlet and end at the (ost re(ote diffuser& The return se'(ents start at the (ost re(ote return 'rille and end at the air handler inlet& Read also the narrati1e on sheet !, which explains (an) aspects of the pro'ra(& +lso, read the + ,R+E paper I wrote which explains the (ath and the procedure used& +fter fillin' in the input sheet, it is onl) necessar) to 'o to the Friction Factor sheet ! and run the (acro friction factor& The desired output, which is the size for each se'(ent and the external static pressure of the duct s)ste(, is printed on this sheet as well as on the Report sheet& It should be noted that this pro'ra( does not follow the + ,R+E reco((ended procedure, which is to perfor( an e*ual friction anal)sis of e1er) branch, and to iterate until there is a pressure balance at each branch take3off& This would theoreticall) result in a s)ste( that needed no balancin' da(pers& ,owe1er, in the real world, the ducts are ulti(atel) laid out b) a contractor, and sizes are alwa)s to the nearest inte'er inch, so balancin' will alwa)s be re*uired&

This pro'ra( ori'inall) had (an) bu's, but I belie1e I ha1e corrected the( all& 4lease let (e know if )ou ha1e difficult)& Fred 5& $ou'hert), 4&E& 4anacea, Florida dou'het6nettall)&co(
