Display the antecedent word-strip. SIOP 9 What is the definition of an antecedent? Give students time to think and respond. SIOP 18 Correct or affirm their response by saying: SIOP 29 An antecedent is the noun that a pronoun refers to. Display Language and Content Walk-Aways: SIOP 1 & 2 Content Walk-Away: Students will understand the difference between subject and object pronouns. Language Walk-Away: Students will discuss and use subject and obj ect pronouns correctly during a group activity and through a written assignment. Tell the students: SIOP 10, 11 Today we will be adding to our pronoun knowledge by learning the difference between subject and object pronouns. Display the word-strips subject pronouns and object pronouns. SIOP 9 Formative assessment: Learning Goal Understand the terms pronoun and antecedent. Success Criteria I can explain what the following terms mean: pronoun, antecedent. Assessment Strategy Questioning: Who remembers the definition for the term pronoun from

yesterdays lesson? Who can give me an example of a pronoun? What is the definition of an antecedent? Observation: Watch student responses/reactions to questions to see who understands and who does not. SIOP 30 Modification/accommodations: (ELL, IEP, GATE, etc.) SIOP 5 Make sure ELL and IEP students understand the terms previously learned before continuing on. Focus Lesson (I do it) Pass-out the Subject and Object Pronoun Hand-out. SIOP 4-6, 10-12,13, 14, 16, 20 Tell the students: Open up your binders and place the Subject and Object Pronoun Hand-out in your binders under the writing section behind yesterdays Noun, Pronoun, & Antecedent Hand -outs. Invite a student to read the definition of a subject pronoun on the Subject and Object Pronoun Handout. A subject pronoun is a pronoun that functions as the subject of the sentence; therefore it is located in the subject of the sentence. Invite a student to read the next bullet point under subject pronoun. I, you, he, she, it, they, and we are subject pronouns. Invite a student to read the third bullet point under subject pronoun. This, that, these, and those can sometimes serve as subject pronouns. Using the Subject and Object Pronoun Hand-out, provide the students with the following examples of a subject pronoun. We built it together. She gave Sarah a new sweater. Bob was hungry. He ate an apple for lunch. Tell the students: In the first sentence, the pronoun we is a subject pronoun because it is functioning as the subject in the sentence. In the second sentence, the pronoun she is a subject pronoun because it is functioning as the subject in the sentence. And in the next set of sentences, the pronoun he is a subject pronoun because it is functioning as the subject in the sentence. Invite a student to read the definition of an object pronoun on the Subject and Object Pronoun Handout. An object pronoun is a pronoun that takes the action of the verb. Because it is the object of the action, it is located in the predicate or action part of the sentence. Invite a student to read the next bullet point under object pronoun. Me, you, him, her, it, us, and them are object pronouns. Invite a student to read the third bullet point under object pronoun. This, that, these, and those can sometimes serve as object pronouns. Using the Subject and Object Pronoun Hand-out, provide the students with the following examples of an object pronoun. Joshua lit a fire to warm her. Brandons mom gave him a cookie. Samantha accidentally spilled milk on Clara and me. Tell the students: In the first sentence, the pronoun her is an object pronoun because it is found in the predicate of the sentence and is the object of the action in the sentence. In the second sentence, the pronoun him is an object pronoun because it is also found in the predicate of the sentence and is also the object of the action in the sentence. And in the last sentence, the pronoun me is an object pronoun for the same reasons. It is located in the predicate of the sentence and it is the object of the action in the sentence. Before continuing, ask two students the following questions: What is a subject pronoun? What is an object pronoun? Give students time to think and respond. SIOP 18 Correct or affirm student understanding before continuing. SIOP 29

Rewrite: The wind was so strong; it created waves that were ten feet high. Subject or Object pronoun: Subject Invite a spokesman from each table to come to the ELMO to present their tables newly corrected sentences. Have them state whether the pronoun that they used was an example of a subject or object pronoun as well. Correct or affirm their responses before moving on to the next table. SIOP 29 Review the definitions and key concepts for the terms subject pronoun and object pronoun before moving to the independent activity. SIOP 27 & 28 Tell the students: A subject pronoun is a pronoun that functions as the subject of the sentence; therefore it is located in the subject of the sentence. Independent (You do it alone) Tell the students: SIOP 4-6, 12, 13, 20, 21 I would know like you to practice using subject and object pronouns correctly by using them appropriately in a sentence. Looking at your subject and object pronouns hand-outs, you are to pick four subject pronouns and four object pronouns and you are to use them correctly in a sentence. You will write one sentence for each pronoun. When you are finished you should have a total of eight sentences. Also, as you write each sentence you need to circle the subject and object pronouns that you use as well. Using the ELMO, model the activity for the students. Tell the students: Looking at the subject and object pronouns chart on our hand-out, I am going to write an example subject pronoun sentence for you using the pronoun she. SIOP 14 She is my best friend. I am now going to write an example object pronoun sentence for you using the pronoun her. The teacher gave her a new book. TEACHING NOTES
What do I need to remember to do? What materials do I need to have ready? What is the approximate time needed for this lesson? I need to make sure I give students plenty of wait time between questions. I also need to give them plenty of time to complete the tasks they are asked to complete. I need to remember to set clear expectations for the students before each activity. Materials: Vocabulary Word-strips Two-sided Subject & Object Pronouns Hand-out Table activity worksheet

Half-sheet lined paper Time Needed: 45-50 mintues

REFLECTION AFTER LESSON

How can I use the assessment data to reflect on & evaluate the outcomes of teaching and learning? I can use the formative assessments collected during my lesson to help me determine if students successfully meet my objectives for the lesson or not. If not, then using my assessment data, I will go back and reteach the items that students had misconceptions on to help them develop a stronger understanding before continuing on with the lessons in my pronoun unit. How can I transfer what I learned from teaching this lesson to future teaching? The one thing that I learned during this lesson was the importance of stopping and checking for understanding. Assuming that students understand will only lead to misconceptions not being cleared up or addressed. With that being said, if I can stop and address misconceptions more than I know my students will have a much better chance of learning. What was effective and not effective? The most effective thing about my lesson was the large variety of activities that I provided students to help them learn. As for what wasnt effective, it was not stop more than I did to address misconceptions. What goals can I set to improve my practice and student learning? The goals that I have set for myself are to slow down and check for student understanding more frequently.
