Instructor Information: Amy N. Harrison Email: amy_n_harrison@georgiasouthern.edu Phone: 229- 413- 3183 Course Title: 8th grade CCGPS Linear Functions Course Description: This course will teach students how to interpret linear function using tables, graphs, equations, and verbals and find the rate of change and initial value from each method. Course Objectives: In this unit students will: graph proportional relationships; interpret unit rate as the slope; compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways; use similar triangles to explain why the slope is the same between any two points on a non-vertical line; derive the equation y = mx for a line through the origin; derive the equation y = mx + b for a line intercepting the vertical axis at b; and interpret equations in y = mx + b form as linear functions.

Course Standards: MCC8.EE.5 Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. MCC8.EE.6 Use similar triangles to explain why the slope m is the same between any two distinct points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation y = mx for a line through the origin and the equation y = mx + b for a line intercepting the vertical axis at b.

MCC8.F.3 Interpret the equation y = mx + b as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight line; give examples of functions that are not linear.

Course Evaluation and Assignments: Discussion Boards: 30 points (6 @ 5 points each) Each week students will be given a discussion topic that includes an interactive learning object that they must discuss. The learning objects include rap videos, powerpoint/flipcharts, khanacademy and pbs videos to guide instruction. Students will be asked specific instructions about these learning objects and how they can use them when completing assignments about linear functions. The initial post for each discussion must be made by 11:50 pm on Wednesday night and students will then be required to respond to at least 2 other discussions by the end of the week. Individual tasks: 20 points ( 4 @ 5 points each) Each week students will be given one individual assignment to complete. These assignments will be worksheets in which all work must be shown and scanned in to turn in using the online dropbox feature. Students will be asked to turn this assignment in on Thursday of each week and it will be returned by Friday to make any corrections for resubmission on Sunday by 11:59 pm. Group Project: 20 points (1 @ 20 points) Groups will be created during the first week of the course and finalized by the instructor. During the next three week students will be given a group assignment with elements that will be due on a weekly basis. After the weekly element has been turned in other groups will give feedback as well as the instructor and corrections will be made to go towards the final product. On the last day of the course the final group project will be submitted for a group grade and a discussion board will be opened to evaluate group participation during the project. Each comment will be made available for only the instructor to view. Individual Assessments 30 points ( 3 @ 10 points each) A 10 question multiple choice assessment will be given at the end of each week to check for progress and any misconceptions that may be occurring. Students will be allowed 2 opportunities to complete this assignment if they were not happy with their initial grade. After they complete it the first time they will be allowed to ask the instructor 3 questions for clarification before they proceed on their second and final attempt. All assessments are due on Sunday by 11:59 pm.

Grading Policy: 100 -90 pts =A 89 - 80 pts = B 79 - 70 pts = C 69 or below=F

*Late assignments will not be accepted. All assignments should be turned in by 11:59 pm on the day the assignment is due. Please take care to turn all assignments into the correct location.

Instructor and Student Interaction Expectations: As the instructor I will: Provide constructive feedback within 48 hours of the assignment being turned in Provide a variety of ways to communicate (email, phone, discussion boards, chat, or conferences) Provide a variety of ways to demonstrate learning Set high expectations for all students and encourage them to meet those goals Provide personal assistance with technical issues during online course

As a student you will: Complete all assignments to the best of your ability and turn them in by the assigned deadline Respect peers during all discussions and group projects and complete work in a fair equitable manner Login to the online platform at least 4 days a week to participate in class assignments and discussions Do your own work on individualized assignments Notify the instructor for any emergency situations that may affect coursework or assignments being turned in on time. Complete discussions with one original post and at least 2 meaningful responses for each discussion

Learner Guidance and Relevant Resources: Learning module Components: Dropbox-this is a tool that will be used to submit all individual assignments and graded projects

Discussion board-On the discussion board each week you will complete an original post to the discussion topic or video. The post should be well thought out and backed up with examples from class or any research you may have completed on your own. You must also reply to at least 2 other students post for each discussion. The reply should help to further the discussion or provide examples that counter the original posts using examples. Be respectful during all posts. (Reply such as I agree or That is what I would do are not descriptive enough.) Please be thorough will all replies to receive full credit. Modules- modules will break down assignments and expectations for each week in a manageable way. Pay attention to what is due during each module. Schedule/Calendar- The schedule will be put on a calendar to provide a visual and help you to organize materials based on when they are due. Grades- All final grades will be posted with feedback for each assignment. Please email me if you are concerned with any of the posted grades.

Policies Concerning Academic Honesty: Scholastic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty or academic misconduct is any type of cheating that occurs in relation to a formal academic exercise. No credit will be given for any assignment that the instructor deems scholastic dishonesty has taken place (i.e cheating or plagiarism taking place). If the instructor sees the problem as persistent the department head will be contacted and the participant may be removed from the class. If any problems occur during the class please contact the instructor first.
