M ICRO S TATION
MicroStation Descartes adds high-performance raster image display, transformation, enhancement, editing, mosaicking, georeferencing (warping) and plotting capabilities to MicroStation. MicroStation Descartes supports engineering and mapping projects that require the use of large images, and can be used to create hybrid maps, plan sheets and other visual documents. It provides a consistent, tightly integrated platform for MicroStation raster projects and is designed for production throughput. Great attention has been paid to display speed, interactive interfaces, simple and accessible tools, ease of learning and ease of use. MicroStation Descartes contains everything that you need to incorporate images in any MicroStation project, including the following components: Image ManagerImage display, management and plotting Image EditImage editing, mosaicking and enhancement Image TransformImage placement and document layout RegisterImage and vector warping VectorizeInteractive conversion to vector geometry Work as if you are at the site. Capture information from an accurate source. Produce hybrid plots that are easy to understand. Reduce digitizing by letting the image speak for itself. Communicate effectively with clients and the public. Deliver improved output to your clients. Accuracy of information has always been important in engineering documents. But the rules of competition have changed. Clients and public audiences now demand that information be communicated effectively. With MicroStation Descartes you can:

Use a Variety of Data Sources

Since every project is different, a good imaging solution should not limit your ability to respond to the needs of each project. One project may require aerials; another, satellite imagery. You may need to work with a map, drawing or mylar sheet. MicroStation Descartes makes it simple to prepare any of these data sources. Once your document is scanned,

can export TIFF, CIT and COT files. To use your work in popular word processing Satellite and presentation software packages, stamp your vectors into your image and export a single TIFF file.

Navigate Images with Ease

Once images are imported into Mylar MicroStation Descartes, they can be displayed in any of the eight MicroStation views. Turn images on or off as you need MicroStation Descartes provides unparalleled flexibility. Most scanning devices or imaging software packages support TIFF file formats. MicroStation Descartes easily imports a wide variety of TIFFs. If you use Intergraph I/RAS products, you can import your COT and CIT files directly into MicroStation Descartes, maintaining all positional information. With MicroStation Descartes, you can view bitonal, grayscale, or continuous tone images at any scale and at any resolution. Lay a bitonal drawing over a grayscale aerial image, or mosaic several grayscale aerials with a color aerial image. them. You will be impressed when you see how fast the images display and how quickly they respond when you pan and zoom.

Fit Images to Cover the Site

To conserve disk space, you can also use Deflate, PackBits, CCITT3, and CCITT4 data compression to reduce bitonal files by 95% and grayscale and color files by 30%. If you need to move MicroStation Descartes files to another system, you Match specific landmarks on the correct space with the corresponding landmarks on the image. With WYSIWYG warping, you need not be exact when you place points. If a point does not fit, move it. As you gather more points, the vectors will align tightly over the image. Once you are satisfied with the fit, resample the image to its new, correct geometry. Once you have imported the images, the next step is to warp them to fit the correct geographic space. The correct geographic space can be represented by a list of known points or by a geometrically accurate DGN file.

Eliminate guesswork with MicroStation Descartes WYSIWYG warping capability.

Create Seamless Mosaics

The warping process is repeated for each image needed to cover the site. Once all of the images are geometrically placed, the next step is to enhance the images for a consistent look. The Contrast Stretch tool is used to adjust the brightness and contrast of each image. Then, each image is given the same number of grayscale levels and assigned the same color palette.

Use any MicroStation editing tool to draw over your image backdrop. Load your favorite MDL application and use it with MicroStation Descartes as you design.

Create Presentation Documents with High Visual Impact

MicroStation Descartes lets you create a variety of decision support documents, and can include: Site plans

Where the images overlap, cutlines are drawn along convenient breaklines (field lines, streets, and so forth). The areas designated for removal are rasterized to a single color and then made transparent, so that the underlying images are visible to the extent of the

Use the Image as You Design

Once the image scene is complete, the image can be used at any time in combination with the design file, enabling you to: Examine the site without actually being on-site. Zoom in to explore site details and gather the information you need to consider specific design issues.
