Lesson Objective SOL CH.5a Phases of Matter and Kinetic Molecular Theory Ideal Gas Law

The student will be able to investigate and understand that the phases of Purpose matter are explained by kinetic theory and forces of attraction between particles. Key concepts include pressure, temperature, and volume.

At the beginning of class, the teacher will give a brief introduction lecture on the Ideal Gas Law (including Boyles Law, Charles Law, and Avogadros Law) using a simple PowerPoint presentation to highlight key ideas. The lecture will explain the relationship between each of these laws and how they work Activity together to create the Ideal Gas Law. The teacher will explain the relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature according to the Ideal Gas Law. The teacher will answer any questions before the students begin their projects. Using the laptops, internet, and iMindMap application, the students will split up into groups of five or six to create a digital map for either Avogadros Law or Charles Law. The teacher will show an example of

a Mind Map using Boyles Law (See Exemplar). The students will collaborate with one another using a file sharing application of their choice. The teacher will observe the students progress throughout the class and answer any questions they might have. The map must include video links, images, and text. Once the map is completed, students will submit their Mind Map to the teacher via file sharing software or website and present their project to the class as a group. The students will be graded as a group and individually on their presentation (See Assessment). After all presentations are complete, the class will work together to create one large map incorporating all the different aspects of each law. We will review the concepts before the end of class in the Mind Map 3D presentation setting and students can request clarification on topics they may not fully understand. The final map will be uploaded to a central class website where students can access the information for reference or study material.

The students will present their Mind Maps to the class and will be graded as an individual and as a group. Each group member MUST present a portion of the map to the class and explain what they learned. One to three points will be added to the individuals grade based on how well the group performs as a whole. This should encourage group members to work together and have Assessment equal participation in the project. The group score will depend on how well the group performs. They should be able to give detailed explanations of concepts, answer questions from classmates, and create a well-organized Mind Map. The individual score will be graded on a similar basis and will range from one to five points. The entire project is worth seven points and the highest total score possible will be eight points.
