The report is for the period beginning January 1 to !ebruary 1 "#1 in the $perations depart%ent (&'C) and the report entails both the practical and theoretic e(periences A. TURBINE HALL ROUTINE CHECKS The acti)ities included the following* i. 11k) switch roo% checks ii. Top co)er high water le)el and break alar%s testing iii. +tation drain pu%ps checks and high water le)el alar% testing i). ,(ercising of brake e%ergency- isolating )al)es and TC. pit checks ). Blowing up of water traps in the brake air co%pressor recei)ers $ther acti)ities carried out by the student during the period include B. OPERATION ROUTINE TEST PROCEDURES (ORTP) These are done so as to constantly %onitor the status of the unit/s au(iliaries (their health) a. ORTP at number 21 Tas s To carry changeo)er of duty and to test the auto start0stop feature at nu%ber 1 and " air co%pressors) The reason was to ensure the a)ailability of standby air co%pressor. b. ORTP at number ! Tas s To indi)idually test sub1%ainfold interflow switches associated with each bearing cooler water syste%. These switches will be tested for freedo% of %o)e%ent. The reason for this task is to ensure proper cooling of the syste% as failure %ay result in high bearing te%perature which can da%age the bearing ". #. The loss of switch gear pressure pre)ents operation of 12k) switch gear on the %ain turbo alternators and station transfor%ers

Tas s To test the brake air co%pressor auto start feature together with the 3brake low air pressure4 local and re%ote alar%s. The reason is that should insufficient co%pressed air be a)ailable to satisfactorily operate the hydro generator brakes on shutting down of the %achine resultant da%age %ay be caused by 5wiping/ of the white bearing surface. ###. ORTP number 2/A 0 ma"(#ne "**.#n) 'ater stra#ners Tas s The acti)ities in)ol)ed cleaning of strainers in the %achine that cools water pipes fro% the penstock. The reason is to clear off any dirt which could ha)e accu%ulated at the strainers and %ight pre)ent the s%ooth flow of water. #&. Ot(er ORTP t(at 'ere 1*ne 6nclude the $7T' nu%ber 2- 12- 8 and 9 C. OTHER ACTI2ITIES .hen there was a station blackout and the student was on that shift he had a chance to witness and participate in the acti)ities done to start up the %achines these were* i. +hutting down of TC. )al)es nu%ber 11: and interchanging strainer bo( )al)es ii.
