General Intercessions
Fr. CAMILO J. MArIVOET, CICM
The message of Fr. Camilo J. Marivoet, CICM, is encouraging: Think of your communities, their needs and aspirations, the stage of their faith, their education, their religious and secular culture. Adapt yourself to them. Give them the Good News to the extent they can digest and live it. Bring them closer to God and help them to see and live how near God is to them in their everyday life. This book offers models that can make our Eucharistic celebrations much more pastoral, much closer to the lives of the people, as you keep in mind the nature of the different parts of the Mass.

Practicing Peace
Children can teach grown-ups. They offer the wisdom we once knew. We only have to remember. It was simple then. It can still be simple now, yes, even for grown-ups.
As it is the ethos of EWA (Ecclesia of Women in Asia) to create a forum for inclusive, participatory and meaningful dialogue among its delegates, the exchanges during the conference signaled to the participants that this dialogue extends beyond the conference itself. There was energy and inspiration to bring back to their respective places, countries and ministry the insights generated by the conference. Those of us who were privileged to be at the conference realized that we could not but engage in the ongoing dialogue and reflection on the vital role of Asian women theologians in the academe and in the grassroots to find more creative ways of engaging in the praxis of peace that leads to liberation.

Vatican II has taught us to understand the Church as a community of convoked people, where every form of Christian life is mutually developed and vivified. Vatican II has placed the foundation for an "existencial ecclesiology" or an ecclesiology of the forms of Christian life or a "theological-charismatic anthropology."

Jesus Christ
From the very beginning of his papacy, Pope Benedict XVI has made as his own top priority: to reintroduce the fundamentals of the Christian Gospel and of the Catholic tradition to todays Catholic faithful and to the contemporary world. It has been noted, again and again, that the present Holy Father is, by his own intent, a pope of the basics. Surely at the very top of the list of these basics is to know Jesus Christ and to have an authentic personal relationship with him. As the original editor of the present book (Giuliano Vigini) points out: The experience, the proclaiming, and giving witness to the mystery of salvation revealed to us in Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior of all, is at the center of all the teaching of the Church.

Fr. Anscar Chupungco fondly recalls his first class as a student at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in 1965. Professor Salvatore Marsili-famed theologian, liturgist, and cofounder of the institute entered the lecture hall, and after a prolonged and awkward silence finally asked, And so, what is liturgy? This seemingly simple question underlies Chupungcos untiring love for liturgy and his lifetime of searching for answers. His is a passion deeply rooted in tradition, which is evident in this volume. Relying on Scripture, patristic writers, and conciliar and postconciliar documents and with great skill, prudence, and the fundamental virtue of obedience he carefully examines current liturgical trends that are the subject of fierce debate. At a time when we focus so intently on the debate itself, Chupungco cautions us to remember: At the end of the day what matters are not personal opinions but what truly contributes to making the prayer of the Church an encounter with the person of Christ. It is this most sacred encounter that is at the heart of What, Then, Is Liturgy? And it is this encounter that will lead us day by day to the ultimate heavenly liturgy, our eternal and perfect offering of praise to God.

This book is a journey made with other people. It recognizes the multiplicity of initiatives that other groups have already initiated in the Church like propose new methods on how best to walk with the Word and make it as a basis for life and mission. The book makes some proposals on how to profit from this Word-Mission project. It underlines the following elements that would give unique perspective to our study of the Word: (a) To integrate the daily reading of the Word in the life and rhythm of the individual and of the group who wish to make this journey. (b) To go beyond the mere reading of the Word in its critical and textual level so that it will truly be a spiritual reading of Gods Word. Thus a passage has to be made from what the Bible says to what does it tell me and what does it tell us. (c) To read the Word in view of service, that is, the Word as a source of spirituality and energy in ones commitment to serve the other.

This relatively new culture of the adult faith-seeker originated in the closing decades of the twentieth century as developmental psychology highlighted the changing nature of growth and maturity at different life-stages. Accompanied by the information explosion, adult people particularly began to ask questions for which they sought adult answers. The co-dependency of earlier times, expecting adults to believe what religious authorities taught, is alien to contemporary adult religious maturity. Adult faith has arrived at a new threshold, requiring novel approaches and strategies in the religious development of adult people. A wonderful synthesis on contemporary faith development, a resource that will prove valuable and affirming for those seeking more authentic belief in rapidly changing times!

In the sacred books the Father who is in heaven meets his children with great love and speaks with them; and the force in the Word of God is so great that it remains the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith for her children, the food of the soul, the pure and perennial source of spiritual life. These words from Vatican IIs Divine Revelation can serve as a vital foundation for these volumes of commentaries on the Lectionary readings for the cycle of the Churchs liturgy, worship, prayer and preaching. The readings serve to help us realize our connection to the universal Church praying as the Body of Christ together with one heart, mind, soul and body. The liturgy of Word and Eucharist is like a huge web strung across the world, holding it together and gathering all peoples into one before God. These commentaries are offered as jumping off places, and there cannot be enough of them for no matter how many years we listen and celebrate the liturgies of the Churchs year and participate in the great mysteries of our God, there is always so much more to say, more food for thought, more hope and courage distilled, more essence of the scent of God among us; more to hear of wonder, delight and the love that God bears for us in Jesus and the Spirit.

To Live in Prayer
The Christian, grafted by the baptism in Christ, through prayer makes conscious and carries out the personal mystery of the adopted son when he listens to understand, loves to unite his heart, and decides to agree his will with the Spirit that leads to the Father, and teaches him from within to become an authentic son. Prayer is therefore the unfolding of the mystery of the Christian personality through ones whole life.

This book is a pleasantly readable and inspiring presentation of the Last Things, a subject which does not lend itself easily to interesting reading. The authors treatment of the Last Things, seeing it all as a theology of hope from the perspective of Gods love is refreshing. And he makes his subject very relevant when he states correctly, Every revelation of the past or of the future is intended for the present life and is meant to instruct and challenge us.

Fr. Salvador Buddy G. Agualada, Jr., a priest-poet, is now sharing his ideas, convictions, thoughts and reflections in his first book Stirrings of a Heart in Prayer. His poems bare to us the heart within the man; his homilies and addresses, the mind and hand within him. Through his poetry, it is hoped we also see ourselves as beings bowing to a mighty Creator; through his homilies and addresses, it is hoped we realize ourselves as being empowered by the same Creator who has called us from the very beginning to a life of communion and love.

Moms A Stewardess
The book contains inspiring stories of a woman who not only managed to perform her role as a wife to her husband and a mother to her two kids but is also an active worker in the Church, promoting the value and importance of stewardship in our Christian life. The author narrates how simple conversations with her kids, Adi and Ali, have become opportunities to instill and teach her kids about Stewardship. In this book one cannot help but be amazed that the little acts of sharing, giving, concern and love that we do for our family, parish, friends and people we meet everyday are acts that promote and help in building the Church.

Our healing is coincident with the discovery of how much we have falsified God. But how could we, trapped into our self-hatred, ever discover how wrong we were in projecting a remote and angry God? Only by experiencing the true face of the love that is there for us. It is to such an experience that the liturgy invites us.

Gregory Palamas and the Great Spiritual Traditions of Asia: The Encounters Relevance to Asian Religious Life
Fr. Canilangs well-researched study is a groundbreaking work which investigates in depth the spiritual teaching of Gregory Palamasas found specially in the 18th century ascetico-mystical Philokalia anthropologyand brings it into exploratory dialogue with the rich and varied spiritual heritage of Asian cultures and religions. This is done, as a sustained effort to more fully understand the significance and relevance of the Eastern/hesychast way (and its experience) for contemporary religious asceticomystical life and practice in Asia. Thus also men and women living the Religious Life in Asia will be helped to rediscover, from a fresh perspective and at a new depth, the Christian tradition of the spiritual asceticomystical life. Fr. Canilangs reflection is remarkably comprehensive in its striving to touch all the bases relevant to Christian life, mission and ministry in the Asia of our time. It also meets the imperative to enter into inter-religious dialogue even in the area of spirituality. C.G. Arevalo, SJ

Freeing Celibacy
DOnALD COZZEns
Mandatory celibacy for Latin rite Catholic priests has been the norm for almost 900 years. Now the clergy sexual abuse scandal and the rapidly declining number of priests have pushed many of the faithful to the point of questioning this tradition of the church. Cozzens explores priestly celibacy as source of power and burden of obligation, as spiritual calling and gift of the Spirit. Putting mandatory celibacy in historic perspective, he examines the ancient and contemporary experience of married clergy in the Eastern churches of the Roman rite church. It is time, he concludes, to set celibacy free from canonical mandate to become what it is meant to be a graced way of life for some but not all of the churchs ordained ministers.

Teams of Elders
BIsHOp FrITZ LOBIngEr
During the past decades Parish Pastoral Councils and Diocesan Councils have presented proposals for overcoming the shortage of priests. Councils of Priests and Diocesan Synods have also passed resolutions about it. These suggestions were often unrealistic and lacked a consideration of the many implications of such ideas. Again, what is needed is a more detailed and more realistic vision of the future of the ordained ministry. This publication is designed to stimulate discussion about such details.

This book proposes parish clusters as the easiest and safest starting point when examining the idea of ordaining groups of local parish leaders. In many parts of the Church, the shortage of priests has resulted in one priest having to serve a group of parishes within a diocese. This development of parish clusters is not welcomed by many Catholics who were accustomed to having their own parish priest. However, this arrangement offers the bestin some cases the onlyanswer to the insufficient number of priests. The rationale for suggesting parish clusters as the appropriate starting point for the ordination of teams of lay leaders is explained at length.

A book like this, then, is a recipe to cook a Christian Community.

Asia gathers together all the more important texts issued by assemblies, conferences and consultations of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conference (FABC) in the first 21 years of its existence. This book delves into this very topicthe theology of struggle. It plunges far deeper than theological reflections and oral representations available. It goes to the source of what became known as the theology of struggleit goes to the very people themselves. It journeys with these progressive Christians as they discover a new way of life, a new way of being church. It travels with them from early days of transformation, watches as some lose their all-important Christian identity, reports the moment when they claim their place in Philippine history, and remains with those who continue to struggle to this day. It reports crucial incidents, reveals the dangers and frustrations faced, but never loses hope. Indeed, this is not a theological text, despite its name. It is a book about a courageous group of men and women church people from diverse backgroundswho joined the revolutionary struggle in the Philippines.

It invites its members to reflect on the Good News brought by Jesus, to share their own insights in His words and actions and from there, to come to action to improve the life of their community on all levels. Its goal is that the members live more and more as brothers and sisters, and become more willing to help each other. This can be used also in Bible Study Groups, with the hope that one-day they too will grow to a living, helping and loving community. (In Tagalog)

This volume is devoted to the study of the time and space components of the liturgy. Although the Eucharist, sacraments, and sacramentals are all celebrated in time and space, there are three types of liturgical celebrations on which time and space have a direct particular bearing. These are the liturgy of the Hours, the liturgical feasts and seasons in the course of the year, and the dedication of churches. The first two relate to time; the third, to space.

Cognizant of the difficulty of many Christians to see the meaningfulness of the classical Christological formulas for our times, the authors attempt in this work to re-appropriate the tradition within the Filipino culture and situation. In this effort they are clearly guided by the mental journey of the disciples in recognizing Jesus as the Christ. It is within this perspective that de Mesa and Wostyn revisit the fundamental questions and processes to Doing Christology.

EAMOnn BrEDIn
Through this thought-provoking book, Bredin guides the reader to assess the journey each Christian makes in following the Way of Jesus. In this book Raymund Schwager surveys the churchs christological tradition and proposes an understanding of Jesus that is informed by a conversation with the great theologians and leaders of the past and influenced by two contemporary pioneers in Christian thought: Hans Urs von Balthasar, known for his theodramatic approach, and Ren Girard, widely recognized for his mimetic scapegoat theory. The result is both a convincing scholarly picture of Jesus in relation to his Jewish historical context and to the beginnings of the Christian community and a coherent message of Jesus as Gods word of salvation to humankind.

A Return to Spirit breaks new ground. It has no interest in attacking either the institution or those disenchanted by it. By looking at the evolution of the Catholic Church in the light of Transpersonal Psychology, it offers fundamental reasons why efforts at renewal have led to polarization, and offers a vision of the future that focuses on transformation through spiritual values. During the last twenty years, our knowledge of Asian Christian theologies and of their extensive written sources has greatly increased, as has the number of those studying and teaching such theologies. There has been, however, no attempt as yet to provide an Asia-wide and comprehensive guide to study or research in these theologies. These volumes provide the first ecumenical and fully representative guide to research in the authors, movements and sources for contextual Asian Christian theologies. The central focus is therefore upon theological reflection which has arisen from the faith experience of Christians within the particular histories and cultures of the regions peoples and which has been shaped and resourced by such contexts.

This two-volume work, Theology from the Heart of Asia, seeks to promote this self-discovery process within Asias Christian communities; it highlights Asian perspectives in theological reflection and pastoral life. In the many tasks integral to the effective inculturation of the Gospel and the ecclesiogenesis of the Church in Asia, theology necessarily plays a significant role. This book gathers together all the completed doctoral dissertations focused on the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences (FABC), that continental community of Asian Churches which emerged from the November 1970 pastoral visit of Pope Paul VI to Asia. In Manila, the pope met with 180 Asian bishops and they discerned how best to enhance the reception of the Second Vatican Council in Asia. In subsequent years, the FABC vision of inculturated, missionary local Churches has captured the imagination of many Catholics across the Asian continent.

Dialogue
One can assume that these members of the faithful have little knowledge about the Churchs teachings and that they probably have never heard of Nostra Aetate, let alone understand or subscribe to its teachings. In fact, even some of our own priests and other pastoral leaders are not familiar with documents such as Dialogue and Mission or with the FABCs Theology of Harmony. Hence, we have to admit that there is indeed a gap between what the FABC and the Church in Asia is saying about interreligious dialogue and what is actually happening at the grassroots levels. The publication of this Resource Manual, therefore, attempts to address this issue and hopefully, will play a small role in bridging the gap between the theory and the practice. Specifically, the Resource Manual contains all sorts of materials which could be used for the education and formation of persons for interreligious dialogue.

To understand the cult of the Christian religion. The Virgin Mary is a ubiquitous but enigmatic presence in Christian history and culture. The tradition about Mary forms a vast and multi-layered aspect of Western history, culture and spirituality. It is not just in the Catholic tradition that Mary has become a particular focus of study and interest. Mary has also become a crucial interest for Christians outside this tradition (Protestant, Anglican) as a path to ecumenical understanding. This book is intended as a reference book for the student or scholar seeking knowledge of the history and contemporary practice of the cult of the Virgin Mary. It provides new essays which give overviews of particular areas of study both historical and thematictogether with texts from primary sources and important scholarly articles, some of which appear in English for the first time.

In these decisions the perspective of consecrated life or priestly apostolate can appear as an actual possible call of the Lord. But it will be necessary to reflect upon the reasons that lead to this kind of choice, and to purify them, discovering the true profundity of vocation. CLARETIAN PUBLIcATIONS
A modern prayerbook and book about prayer for people of all faiths, for those who go to church and those who dont. Favorite prayers from many traditions, more than 400 prayers of yesterday and today from more than 250 writers.
Like a body without a soul, is the way Pope John Paul II describes the Rosary without contemplation, citing Paul VI, Without it, the recitation (of the Rosary) runs the risk of becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas, in violation of the admonition of Christ: In praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think they will be heard for their many words (Mt 6:7). Deep reflection, then, on the mysteries of the lives of Jesus and Mary are the heart and soul of the Rosary. One moves gradually from a mediocre life of grace to a more intimate union with God.

How does anyone put on the mind of Christ, as Scripture commands? Can people really get so close to Christ that they not only know his mind but also take on his thinking? And what does this mean for Christian discipleship, the Church, the ordinary person of faith? We shall see, in the case of Jesus, that these two concepts heart and mind, become one orientation, attitude, and spring for action. They also provide one unmovable pointer for us to a destination we trust in, as we set out to know Christ, and be known by him, and so to enter into a creative relationship with the very centre of our faith.

Reclaiming Spirituality
DIArMUID OMUrcHU
This book is for those who want to reclaim their intuitive wisdom and outgrow the propaganda that has controlled our lives and our hearts for far too long. It is a book that seeks to engender hope and vitality beyond the several destructive forces that engulf our world today. We need to reclaim the inner resources through which, once more, we can learn to live with integrity, meaning and joy in our daily lives.
208 pp., PhP229
Diarmuid OMurchus purpose in writing this book has been to retrieve the long-lost subverted tradition of spirituality and reestablish its primary significance in the human search for meaning and purpose. While the modern world continues to struggle with religious fanaticism on the one hand and religious indifference on the other; spirituality explores with new vision and with fresh possibilities for a more integrated world view.
207 pp., PhP195
A Spirituality of Stewardship
The question this book poses is key to understanding and practicing stewardship as a way of life. The author believes that when all is said and done we own nothing because we are possessed wholly and completely by a good and gracious God. Stewardship is one of the chief characteristics of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. This basic insight, among others, was essential to the stewardship message of Archbishop Thomas Murphy, to whom this book is dedicated. To clarify and exemplify his message, Conway offers insightful reflections, moving stories, and practical reflection questions for individual and group use. What Do I Own and What Owns Me? is invaluable for parish stewardship committees, parish counselors, pastoral ministers, and all who have a profound desire to live as disciples of Christ.

Finding God elusive or questioning Gods presence in the world doesnt have to undermine faith. Questioning Gods very existence, as Jane Kopas shows us, goes as far back as Moses, Job and Jonah, and including some of the early church fathers and mystics. Today, in our continuing struggle to know God, we must be willing to move beyond a desire for a God who is easily grasped and understood. Then we may find a hidden God who can strengthen us and better help us cope with the uncertainty of our world.

The Anabaptists were the largest, most significant of the radical movements that paralleled the Protestant reforms of the 16th century. Their program was distinctive in its insistence upon baptism of adult believers, a visible life of discipleship, an ascetic way of life, and a commitment to nonviolence. This vision clashed with the ruling civil and church authorities, whether Catholic or Protestant, who persecuted them violently. Despite persecution and ostracism the Anabaptist tradition lives on in diverse forms whether among the Amish, the Hutterites, the Bruderhof, or the Mennonites.

The Spiritual pilgrimage undertaken by the Pope on his way to the Synagogue of Rome, the first visit ever since the time of Peter, spanned centuries of mistrust. The practice of spiritual direction assumes a theology of the Holy Spirit, a theology of revelation and the Church, and a theology of prayer. Seeking God in All Things explores each of these themes as the underpinnings of spiritual direction and examines what makes the Christian religious experience distinctive. Since not every experience of God bears a Christian imprint, Reiser, asks whether and in what way a Christian might be able to assist someone who is not Christian develop his or her interior life. This question looks beyond suggesting the concrete steps a person might take in initiating, nurturing, and solidifying a way of praying. It looks, rather, toward the fundamental issue of helping others as they discover and deepen their relationship to the mystery of God.

Each item is ecumenically acceptable so that no reader might be alienated by a denominational nuance. These one-liners should be taken as small snacks, not in ravenous mouthfuls, to prevent spiritual indigestion. Each item should, ideally, be pondered meditatively, seeking applications in your personal life situations.

Touching Thoughts
Mr. ROMAnO BULATAO
Touching Thoughts A-Z, as the author reveals it himself, is a collection of some of the inspiring passages he has learned from his students in his long years of teaching experience at Saint Louis University. Moreover, Touching Thoughts A-Z affirms that the basics of teaching and learning in the classroom bear a far-reaching range of influence that includes life outside the classroom setting itself. For Mr. Bulatao, recognizing the significance of students in the entire teaching experience shows that teaching is profoundly about learning from our students. Students can teach us, if only we, teachers, are open to admit that. This selfless and admirable account of Mr. Bulatao exemplifies the truth that there clearly exist a reflexive relation between teaching and learning. Personally, I see here a teacher who is an educator in the real sense of the word a leader and a servant at the same time who is committed to the well-being of students. (An excerpt from the Foreword of this book, by Rev. Fr. Jessie M. Hechanova, CICM - President, Saint Louis University)

During the difficult years of Martial Law (1972-86) the author collaborated with community-based artists whose souls-slide productions, radio dramas, video documentaries, and alternate media provided ways for poor people to voice their concerns and fears. Among the concerns of the poor wasand continues to bethe reckless and relentless exploitation of the natural resources of Mindanao for the profit of a few. This incessant plunder and pollution of Mindanaos resources is bringing about an ecological tragedy. At present, the forests, rivers, seas, mangroves, and farmlands of the island are seriously degraded, and many poor communities are concerned about how to restore their dying habitat. Buschs art, which now includes plays, poems, paintings, illustrated books, and handicrafts, echoes the concern of the poor for their wounded land, and celebrates the Earth as a gift to be cherished and nurtured.

In the aftermath of World War II, young Communist Hugo Ovath is given an intriguing assignment by party leaders: infiltrate the Catholic Church and work from within to undermine peoples faith. To do this, he must become a priest. He becomes very successful and soon his actions and writings quickly cause him to be noticed with admiration by church leaders. Some swearing and sexual details may offend certain readers, but this is a thought-provoking look at a man floundering between his own love of power and a newfound belief in God.

EDITED BY JOHn NErY
Re-imagined from a womans perspective, these familiar events delight the imagination and stir the soul in refreshing new ways. Winter retells our ancient myths of Creation, the Garden, and the Flood, and chronicles the adventures of some of the remarkable women of Genesis and Exodus: Sarah and Hagar, Rebekah, Leah, Rachel, Miriam, and many more. According to the author, she is presenting us with an ancient manuscript that was written long ago by one of the many wives of Solomon. This woman writer, named Noah, feared the loss of womens perspective as written records began replacing oral traditions. She wrote these Chronicles to offer another side to the story of our shared myths and memories. The Chronicles of Noah and Her Sisters is wonderful spiritual reading, and a must for all womenand men concerned about handing on the essentials of faith to their daughters and granddaughters.

The Gospel of Luke was most probably written for a Christian community or a cluster of house churches in a city of Eastern Mediterranean. Thus when Luke speaks of the poor, he has first of all in mind the urban poor in his time. Thereby his Gospel has a special relevance for the Third World and its millions of urban poor in the mega cities for the twentieth century. The Third Gospel for the Third World is a commentary on the Gospel of Luke that intends to pay special though not exclusive attention to whatever may be of particular interest to Third World readers, as it tries to make available to a wider reading public what the author considers to have pastoral implications first and foremost in a third world setting.

The Bible
The author provides the readers profound and helpful interpretations of important scripture passages. These interpretations are grounded in the Churchs teaching from the Vatican Council II. He also tackles contemporary issues we experience today like issues on gender, domestic violence, and the value of living a moral life. A number of the core chapters directly engage the paradox of salvation and eternal life. The last two chapters of the work argue eloquently that the innocence, humility and openness of children serve as the role model for adults who seek the spiritual path, salvation, and a religious meaning for human life.

This book offers a new approach to appreciating the life of Jesus. This makes the reader realize that Jesus was once a very ordinary guy, a typical man in his time. It also contains an explanation of the biblical references, thus giving one the perspective for reflection.
This work recognizes the great need to educate Christians in the value of the Old Testament and demonstrates its relevance to us, the people of the third millennium. This book is a timely reminder that the first part of the Bible forms the basis of our Christian way of life. It explores our spiritual roots in these Scriptures, recognizing them as works of ancient masters, teachers who have left us a legacy of unsurpassed wisdom.

Represents a lifetime of thought, bible study, missionary experience, and missiological teaching by one of the premier missiologists of the last half of the century. During the past fifty years, there have been few works that have dealt in-depth with a missional reading of the Bible. Yet of those that do exist, in many cases the biblical analysis has been done by Bible scholars with little background in missiological thought or praxis. In other cases missiologists with little background in biblical studies have tried to derive biblical foundations for their missionary perspective. In this volume Glasser uniquely couples a careful and in-depth approach to the Bible with a broad understanding of missiological reflection and missionary action.
