Walden, Spring 2014 Assignment Two 1 The Narrative Research Paper Assignment Two (English 1102) Spring 2014

For this phase of your project, you will be developing a narrative research paper; typically when we envision research papers, we may think of the dry reporting of information. However, this assignment will allow you to choose a particular conversation of interest concerning your selected figured world from Assignment One. In short, you want to think of this developing project in terms ofwhat conversations are most useful in the figured world you have studied, and how can the figured world's accepted communication strategies impact other spheres. Unlike previous research papers, you are not spending most of your time summarizing what other people have said; instead you are entering the conversation with other sources to create a narrative about the figured world you have observed. Be careful not to just recite sources that support your viewpoint alone; you must also speak to both the opposition and "fence- straddlers." You want to fairly represent multiple opinions. Rarely are conversations equally divided in terms of opposition and supportthere are often many gray areas as well. Break your paper down into four major parts: Background/Introduction: Introduce your topic and personal position to the audience of your choice. Essentially, how do you fit into this figured world? You may consider addressing other members of the figured world, someone outside the figured world, etc. but be as specific as possible. Example: We are going to do a class activity surrounding the BBC series Sherlock. As a class, we will view a portion of the episode, list out areas of potential research, and begin online searches to see what the conversation has been thus far in our selected areas. Also, as a group, we will select our audience and decide how to best directly address them. Literature Review: Provides both a summary and your perspective on your collected sources including your personal observations; your observations from Assignment One are considered a primary resource. This should be organized according to themes, and not just a progression of sources. You also want to consult a variety of sources such as scholarly articles, videos as relevant, and other relevant, reputable material. Example: I would draw from academic articles using databases, consult radio sources from National Public Radio (NPR), and other sources, which review the actual BBC show. Enter the Conversation: Here is where you will outline your position on your selected issue, considering what other sources have said. In a way, you are responding to the articles you have pulled together in the literature review. Example: We will pick a particular line of inquiry as a class, and I will develop a position on the issue. With the particular episode we are viewing, a potential line of research will be the use and overuse of technology and social media and how these spheres impact our notions of privacy and national security. Using both primary and secondary resources, we will use the episode of Sherlock as a way of unpacking some of the issues surrounding privacy and technology. Conclusion/"So What:" Reiterate the importance of this issue and suggest areas for further research. Example: This issue of national security and the ever-increasing prevalence of social media warrants further investigation of the impacts of highly publicizing our lives. This paper will suggest ways of responsibly using social media with respect to potential employment outcomes in creating a digital footprint. More generally, your paper should: Briefly summarize the main points of the article, and describe how the article shapes your viewpoint (limit this to 3-5 sentences per source) Develop a narrative about your figured world, explain the relevance of the issue you are researching concerning your figured world, etc. Enter the conversation with the sources you have consulted; don't just cite what other people have said Explain how your views intersect, contradict, or complicate what your sources have to say Incorporates at least 10-12 different reputable resources on your subject (please limit them to ones published from 2000 onward) Include your Assignment One observations as one of your required 10-12 sources; you have conducted

Walden, Spring 2014 Assignment Two 2 primary research for your first assignment, thus its important to share that hard work as one of your reputable sources Be descriptive and deliberate about your word choices, and unless otherwise context appropriate, please follow the guidelines of Standard Written English 1 margins, 12 pt Times New Roman Font, 2500-3000 words, Double-Spaced (does not include the Works Cited/References page) Use the appropriate citation style for your major (MLA, APA, Chicago Turabian, IEEE etc.) You must post your assignment on Moodle for the scheduled workshop date ready to work with your peer response group. Failure to do so or should you choose not to show up to the workshop days, will result in a zero or reduction of your workshop grade You must have a reflective letter discussing the strengths and weaknesses of your paper. No reflection, or an incomplete one, will result in failure of the entire assignment.

Specifically answer the following questions in your research narrative: What conversations are most useful in the figured world you have studied? How can the figured world's accepted communication strategies impact other spheres? What new knowledge have you gained concerning the issue you have researched, and how does this impact your primary research (Assignment One observations)? Reflection: Describe your strengths and weaknesses giving explicit textual examples. Describe what comments were helpful/not helpful from your peer responders and explain how your incorporated the feedback or why you chose to not use some of the feedback. Again, give explicit textual examples cited from the actual marginal and endnote commentary. Explain how you have gone above and beyond guidelines; make a case of how you have exceeded the expectations, giving explicit examples. 500 words, 12 pt, Times New Roman, single-spaced.
