12.2 Assignment 02

Question 1: Temperature Stresses
1.1 The steel rails of a railroad are 12 m with a clearance of 3 mm at 15
o
C. Calculate the
change in temperature that will cause the rails to touch. Calculate the stresses that would be
induced at this new temperature if there were no initial clearance (E = 200 GPa and = 12 10
-
6
/
o
C). [6]
1.2 A copper tube having a cross-sectional area of 2000 mm
2
and a length of 300 mm is palced
between to rigid caps. Four 22 mm diameter steel bolts are symmetrcally arranged parallel to
the axis of the tube and are lightly fastened.Find the stress in the tube if the temperature of the
assembly is raised by 70
o
C. What load will each bolt carry at the raised temperature? (E
st
= 200
GPa; E
cu
= 100 GPa;
st
= 12 10
-6
/
o
C). [14]
Question 2: Strain Energy
2.1 Two joules of strain energy is suddenly induced in a 300 mm long aluminium bar with a 40
mm square cross section, by a compressive load. Calculate the maximum instantaneous stress
induced in the bar and magnitude of the suddenly applied load (E = 70 GPa). [6]
2.2 A 160 mm long connecting link is 50 mm diameter for a length of 100 mm and 30 mm
diameter for the remaining length of 60 mm. The gradual application of the load P results in the
link storing a total of 10 J of energy. Calculate the magnitude of the applied load P, the value of
the stress induced in each section and the total extension. f this load had been applied
suddenly but without shock or impact, what maximum instantaneous stress would have been
induced in the link? (E = 200 GPa). [14]
Question 3: Second Moment of Area
Calculate the position of the centroids and the second moment of areas about the horizontal
and vertical axes through the centroid for the built-up section in Figure 1. Use the section tables
for standard sections (all dimensions are in mm). [20]

Question 4: Bending Stresses
4.1 A strip of steel 3 mm thick and 35 mm wide is bent round a cylindrical drum 4 mm in
diameter. Determine the maximum stress set up in the strip and the bending moment which has
to be applied to bend the strip to this curvature (E = 200 GPa) [5]
4.2 A hollow short cast iron column has outside and inside diameters of 250 mm and 150 mm
respectively. The column is subjected to an axial load applied at a distance of 60 mm from the
centre of the section. (a) Calculate the maximum safe load if the allowable stresses are 100
MPa compressive and 20 MPa tensile; (b) plot a stress distribution diagram and calculate the
position of the NA. [15]
Question 5: Shear Stress in Beams
5.1 A built-up beam of box section (Figure 2) is simply supported over a span of 3 m and
carries a point load of 15 kN at 1 m from the end. The plate is attached to the channel by rivets
pitched at 100 mm intervals. f the shear stress in the rivets must not exceed 50 MPa, determine
a suitable rivet diameter (all dimensions in mm). [12]

5.2 Calculate the percentage of the shear force carried by the web of a T-section with a 142
mm x 11 mm flange and 360 mm x 7 mm web. [8]
Question 6: Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams
Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram for the built-in beam in Figure 3 and
calculate the point of contra-flexure(s). [20]
