Product Overview

This section (Section 2) provides a descriptive overview of the product and may contain reference to features and functionality available in future system releases. Airspans Netspan is a comprehensive management solution that manages the network elements in Airspans WiMAX family, which consists of WIMAX compliant Base Stations (BS) and Subscriber Stations (SS). Netspan is a client-server application, with always-on server components implemented as windows services, and with a front end web application. Netspan uses SNMP to communicate with BS equipment, as well as third party WiMAX compliant SS devices. It can be adjusted to meet customer requirements through its flexible configuration options. The major elements associated with Netspan are as follows: 1. Support for both nomadic and fixed Subscriber Station (SS) 2. IEEE 802.16-2004 standard configuration of the SS for service on the network; SS do not have to be tied to a fixed BS, although they can be 3. Support for Microsoft SQL 2005 and SQL2000 families i.e SQL and MSDE database engines 4. Indirect management of SS (MIB model) 5. Template/class based provisioning 6. Asynchronous configuration of provisioning data 7. Synchronous/asynchronous status (database storage only for key status data) 8. Off-line provisioning capabilities 9. Database is a master for provisioning data 10. Manual re-synchronisation between equipment and NMS 11. Full FCAPS support for all WiMAX equipment The Netspan server is accessed using an Internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer v6 and v7, Firefox v2.0), with BS and SS provisioning, configuration management, fault management etc. via web pages. Netspan has been designed to support efficient operation and maintenance of WiMAX networks, efficient Fault Management is vital for ensuring up time and quality of service. It provides the operator with a comprehensive set of tools that give a total picture of the alarm status in the Network, including important features that support rapid treatment of disturbances in the WiMAX network. A Microsoft SQL database is used to store all the provisioning information, alarms, configuration, events, history and statistical information. Support for Microsoft SQL2005 Express edition (free download) is offered as an alternative for customers that do not require a full SQL 2005 database engine i.e. for small networks of up to 20 sectors and 2000 SSs, or for use in trials The Netspan clients (Internet browsers) are remote from the server machine. Note: 50 simultaneous users may be logged onto Netspan at the same time using the web application. Netspan uses a management information base that can be monitored by a network management system. The management information base, defined as SNMP MIB, allows monitoring of all Airspans BS and SS equipment

Overview of Changes (specific to this system release)

Release 6.1 introduces a new version of Netspan which includes bug fixes as detailed in section 6. No additional features have been introduced since Release 6.0, although all features introduced have been validated with MacroMAX and HiperMAX. The following features introduced in Release 6.0 have been fully validated as part of Release 6.1

Introduction of Licensing

The concept of Netspan licensing has been introduced in Netspan, and license key information is requested during initial installation. However, a license is in fact not yet required, and this request can be ignored. Functionality is not restricted, with the exception of the new Web Services introduced on the Northbound Interface.

3.3

Configuration Management and Provisioning Changes to 802.1q VLAN Bridge Provisioning

802.1q VLAN Bridge Provisioning has been changed in Release 6.0 to align functionality across Airspans entire range of WiMAX Base Station, whilst maintaining functionality in line with the IEEE 802.1Q-2005, IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks Virtual Bridged Local Area Networks. The following new features have been introduced. MacroMAX & HiperMAX support for PVID as defined in IEEE802.1Q Classifier VLANs have been implementation for all BS platforms.

Configuration Management and Provisioning Support for Broadcast Control of Traffic with Unknown Destination Address

Configuration Management and Provisioning Subscriber Station Management Changes to SS Custom Configuration Profile: o New downlink adaptive modulation configuration (averaging factors, SNR margins) o New limit to maximum number of network hosts New event (trap) indicating the change of any of identification parameters (addresses, versions) as described above. Configuration of the BS Sector that the SS is allowed to register on with new properties: BSID and BSID Mask SS global service provisioning is available under Configuration Management, allowing a combination of service parameters (service product, config template and vlan template) to be assigned to all SSs on a network wide basis. SS reporting inventory and equipment addresses. SS reports to BS, using custom management messages the following: its own IP address, SW version and HW revision number, MAC Address and IP address of integrated WiFi AP and MAC Address and IP Address of itnegrated voice gateway (EasyVoice). BS exposes reported values in read-only MIB table and also sends the trap when any of the values change for any given SS. Netspan reads the values from the BS MIB table and also from the objects of the relevant trap and displays the values on the screen. IP Addresses are displayed as HTML links to local management pages of the corresponding equipment.

Configuration Management and Provisioning Support for Integrated WiFi Access Point

The support for Integrated WiFi Access point as follows: The SS list now contains additional columns for WiFi access point and residential voice gateway IP addresses. The SS inventory list has additional columns for the WiFi access point and residential voice gateway Mac Addresses. The SS management page State tab now has the additional information of WiFi Access point and residential voice gateway IP and Mac addresses. A new event type, number 210 (SS Equipment Status Change), has been added for the trap containing the WiFi and easy voice IP and Mac addresses. Software Management

Software Management has been enhancements as follows: Introduction of Download and Activate command for BS, SS and BSDU. o The status of pending, in progress, completed, and retrying for this command are reported in Upgrade categories list page and Edit upgrade category page. Performance Management - Statistics

Security Enhancement Improved Netspan password security with configurable security policy. User can now select one of three policies: Basic, Medium and High o Basic Security Policy is defined by what has previously been implemented in Netspan Release 5.2. This is the default policy. o Medium Security Policy applies stricter rules on what strings are acceptable for password, eliminates obvious strings like password, pass and enforces password change of first login of a new user. o High Security Policy, in addition to Medium one, introduces strict password recycling with configurable expiry period.

3.10 Northbound Interface BETA Release only: New WEB services have been introduced for definition of service profiles. With this enhancement the customer can create/edit/delete service profiles via NBIF API. This feature requires a Netspan License

3.11 Multiple SNMP Trap Destinations Netspan now provides configuration of the Base Station and BSDU SNMP trap destinations, allowing multiple traps to be configured. This feature allows customers with third party fault management system (e.g. HP OpenView) to quickly configure up to 8 trap destinations (including one for Netspan) on all BSs and BSDUs in the network. 3.12 User Interface Enhancements The following user interface enhancements are introduced in this release: Topology changes The topology hierarchy has been updated to recognise that: 1) HiperMAX BSs are grouped together in Shelves 2) MicroMAX BSs are grouped together by sharing a BSDU A Shelf list page has been introduced and shelves may be added, deleted and have their properties edited. The relationship between BSs and Shelves is automatically determined by the discovery service. Topology Navigation Tree The Topology Navigation Tree is a new view showing the hierarchy of items managed by Netspan and provides the following features: o Integrated search of Names and IDs as they appear in the tree. o Layout is remembered so that the same items are shown next time the page is visited. o Hyperlinks provide navigation to the management page or property page of each item. o Icons show items that are unmanaged, are offline or have alarms associated with them. o Additional information such as the IP Address is available in tooltips. Management Page Mini Tree The Mini Tree has been updated to provide the following new features: o Shelf and BSDU is shown in the hierarchy when present o It is possible to navigate down the hierarchy if a + button is shown. This gives the next level in the hierarchy and provides links to the appropriate management page. Use of AJAX technology AJAX enables a web page to be partially updated without the need to fully reload the page. It helps to eliminate the delay, flicker and loss of scrollbar position which can be seen when pages communicate with the server without the use of AJAX. Netspan makes use of AJAX to improve the user experience by giving a smoother, richer experience for the user. Global SS Provisioning To address the need of changing Service Product assigned to large number of SSs Release 6.0 Netspan introduces Global SS Provisioning Page. The Global SS Provisioning page operation is similar to multi-edit but the selection of the population of SSs to edit is performed based on the criteria given by user rather than by selecting SSs on the list. The selection criteria choose SSs, which are provisioned with a given set of profiles: Service Product, Custom Config and Port VLAN Profile. The provisioning of large number of SSs is time demanding hence it is done asynchronously. User can monitor the progress on the page or go to a different page while the operation continues SF Status added to Sector Management SF Status is now available from the Sector Management page in addition to the BS Management and SS Management pages where is was previously available.

Observations

Observations made during system test are listed below. The list is valid at the time of issuing this release note. The observations are provided for information only and are generally very minor or characteristics that have been seen on only few occasions. They are not regular or significant enough to classify as problems. BS Blank Inventory Netspan will be unable to display any data on MacroMAX and HiperMAX shelves without an inventory table. This will only affect older HiperMAX systems.

7.1

Operational Notes
General

The following operation notes should be considered in addition to the recommendations outlined in the Product User Documentation. Attention should be paid to limitations listed in section 6.1.

7.2

Installation

The AS8200 Netspan Application has a number of dependencies and these are automatically verified during the installation process. It is noted that the process appears swift and can be monitored with use of a progress bar but it appears to take up to 5 minutes to get from 100% to removal of the progress bar depending on the specification of the computer. This is a limitation within Microsoft. Following installation, SNMP trap destinations must be configured on a global basis through Netspan in order to receive alarms and event information.

7.3

Services

Eight services are installed and are required to be running note however that the names have been changes in order to de-brand the product: NMS Alarm Service NMS Archive Service NMS Discovery Service NMS Event Service NMS Provisioning Service NMS Job Engine Service NMS SwManager Service NMS Statistics Service

Airspan recommends that the Installer application is set to Automatic so that they start when required. There are a number of inter-dependencies so it is recommended that all services are stopped and started if problems are experienced. There is no requirement to start the services in any particular order.

7.4

Traffic Service Dependency

Netspan is required to support provisioning of any service on the Base Station to provide nomadic support for the SS. It is therefore important to ensure that it is configured properly and communicating correctly with the Base Station in order for any Service Flows to be provisioned. If Netspan is not communicating correctly with the Base Station, a new SS will still be allowed to register to the BS but will not be granted any service flows.

Auto Discovery

AS8200 Netspan is able to Auto Discover Base Station shelves within a pre-defined IP range. This IP range is defined by the user as a Discovery Task. Multiple Tasks can be used. It is during the Discovery process that Netspan detects hardware types. Netspan is also able to detect SSs and read the Hardware Type (i.e. Easy/Pro) provided that they are running at least 169.5. Note that if pre v162 versions are in the other bank, Netspan will report spurious information for that bank. It is necessary to create a Discovery Task with type SS in order to discover SNMP parameters for the purpose of direct management communication with SS and multi-SS software upgrade. SSs with SNMP parameters discovered become available in the Software Management, SS list. 7.6 Software Download

Software can now be downloaded to multiple SSs simultaneously, also enabling their progress to be monitored. Four options are available during the final stages: 1. Download: Download the code defined to the selected SS. 2. Assign to Primary: This will perform a Swap Bank function so that the next time the SS is reset or power cycled, it will run the new version. This can be used so that the end user obtains a transparent upgrade. 3. Activate: This will perform the Swap Bank function, verify it and perform a reset. 4. Download and Activate: This will perform the Swap Bank function, verify it and perform a reset. Note: The SS code to support Activate must be at least V180. Versions earlier than this will require a reset in order to run the new code.
