INTELLIGENCE - problem solving skills and ability to learn and adapt - IQ=MA/CA X 100 (Terminal Drop Hypothesis- pag biglang nag drop yung iq score, baka mamatay yung tao)

THEORIES OF INTELLIGENCE A. Sterbergs Triarchic Theroy -Analytical Intelligence: analyze, judge, evaluate, compare and contrast (science, stat..) -Creative Intelligence: (arts, music, literature) create, design, invent, imagine -Practical Intelligence: (mautak, wais, madiskarte) use, apply, put ideas into practice (street smart) B. Cattell-Horn Theory -Crystallized Intelligence: accumulated information and verbal skills : based on facts and experiences -Fluid Intelligence: capacity to think logically and solve problems in novel situations (use of phone, computer, sa matatanda) : independent of learning experience and education -Both increase in childhood and adolescence - Fluid intelligence peaks in adolescnece and begins to decline around 30-40 -crystallized intelligence increases with age

C. Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligence (MI) -Logical-Mathematical: logic, abstractions, reasonung and numbers (engineers, scientist, accountant, statistician) -Linguistic: area related to words, spoken, or written (writers, newscasters, politician, translator, linguists) -Spatial: spatial judgement and ability to visualize (lahat ng creative pasok sa spatial, engineers, designers, ID, drivers, pilot) -Bodily-kinestetic: control of ones bodily motions and the capacity to handle objects skillfully (CHK, gymnasts, surgeons) -Musical: sensitivity to sounds, rhythms, tones and music -Interpersonal: interactiin with others; sensitivity to others -Intrapersonal: introspective and self-reflective capacities (priests, philosophers) -Naturalistic: nurturing and relating information to ones natural surroundings -Existensial: ability to tackle deep questions about human existence such as meaning of life (Mahatma Gandhi)

-Gardners definition of intelligence is too broad -His different "intelligences" simply represents talents, personality traits and abilities -also suffers from lack of supporting empirical research

CONTROVERSIES AND ISSUES IN INTELLIGENCE -Racial and cultural biases - Use and misuse of IQ Tests

EXTREMES OF INTELLIGENCE A. Mental Retardation: low IQ (usually below score of 70) and difficulty to daily life - Could be: ' organic: (genetic brain damage) ' cultural-familial (no organic evidence)

B. Giftedness - above-average intelligence (IQ: 130 and above), creative and has superior talent in a certain field/area Criteria: ' learns quickly and easily ' needs minimal help ' intensely driven and focused

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT -increased logical reasoning/ analytical skills -mastery of language better communicators aware of social uses of language explore idioms have sophisticated sense of humors increased understanding and use of grammar, syntax and semantics

-Approaches to Reading A. Basic-skills-and-phonetics approach - letter sounds/phonics B. Whole-Language Approach - "sight words", materials as complete form such as stories and poems

Bilingualism - positive effect on childs cognitive development - different neural wiring - should have a consistent source of each language (e.g one-parent-one language approach)
