2nd Grade, Tuesday April 1st!

Behavioral Objective: Students will be able to correctly identify the tempi: Adagio, Moderato, Allegro, and Presto by walking, placing cards in correct slots, and physically demonstrating with streamers. ! TEKS: ! 117.9. Music, Grade 2.! (b) Knowledge and Skills! (2.6) Response/Evaluation. The student responds to and evaluates music and musical performance. The student is expected to:! (A) distinguish between ... faster/slower, louder/softer!

Materials:! Laptop with Tempo March! Projector/Sound System! Bee/Beehive Notecards (pre-lled) & envelopes! Temple Block & Mallets! DVD of Listening Map (Already in laptop)! Around 20, 3' streamers (rounding up)!

Tempo Terms (seated):!

- Adagio! See if anyone remembers! Use Metronome! Chant Rhyme (stated later during movement activity)! - Moderato! See if anyone remembers! Use Metronome! Chant Rhyme (stated later during movement activity)!

- Allegro! See if anyone remembers (Not Fast, starts with a 'q')! Use Metronome! Chant Rhyme (stated later during movement activity)! - Presto! See if anyone remembers! Use Metronome! Chant Rhyme (stated later during movement activity)! - Tempo Marching Around the room! I will be playing on the temple block! Only walk when you hear a sound on the temple block!! Remind students to chant with me! - Use chant Adagio, Adagio, Adagio means slow, playing at Adagio tempo on the
temple block!

- Repeat a few times! - Move on to Moderato, Moderato, Moderato: medium, playing the temple block
at the tempo Moderato!

- Repeat a few times! - Begin playing Allegro, Allegro, Allegro is quick, on the temple block, at the
tempo Allegro!

- Repeat a few times! - End with Presto, Presto: very fast, playing at the tempo Presto on the temple
block!

- Repeat a few times! Mix up at end, see if they can gure out which one I'm playing!

Streamer Activity with Hungarian Dance No. 5:!

- Show Johannes Brahms, elementary-level information about when he lived, his


friends, and what instrument he played (if interest is high, sing Lullaby, and Goodnight and explain that he wrote that piece)!

- Pass out streamers (Remind about whipping and whacking)! 3ft. Streamers! We're gonna hear a song, watch follow me with your streamer! You're going to hear lots of tempo and dynamic changes! Collect streamers! - Show listening map! Do you see some of the terms we just talked about?! Point out tempo changes! This listening map will go along with the music we just heard! Play through music again!
Bee Assessment (If time -10min.):!

Explain that you don't show what you have on your bee to your neighbor! I'll call one square at a time, and you put your bee inside the hive! Some students will have 2 (to pass them all out)! Show the hives (Italian word)! On your bee is the english denition! Make sure the bees go to their hive, and not the wrong one! Keep score of how many they get right (wrong bees give the teacher points) ! Class gets points based on right scores!
If no time, do "Chew, Chew movement activity on laptop, which has a tempo change in the middle of song, asking students to pay attention to that fact.!

Students will line up by colored squares, which I will call based upon who is most quiet. "3
