The foods we eat had gotten a pass in the discussion of affecting the environment.

Meat causes more greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and more to spew into the atmosphere than either transportation or industry. Green house gases trap solar energy, thereby warming the earths surface. Current production levels of meat contribute between 14 and 22 percent of the 36 billion tons of co2- equivalent greenhouse gases the world produces every year. Producing half a pound of hamburger for someones lunch releases as much greenhouse gas as much as a 3,000 pound car nearly 10 miles. Methane emissions from plants and animals, all lead to a buildup of atmospheric greenhouse gases. Half pound of pork produces as much as 2.52 miles (1.90pounds of co2 of) Half pound of beef produces more than pork Pound for pound, beef production generates greenhouse gases that contribute more than 13 times as much to global warming as do the gases emitted from producing the chicken. For potatoes the multiplier is 57.

Beef consumption is rising rapidly, both as population increases and as people eat more meat. Producing the annual beef diet of the average American emits as much as greenhouse gas as a car driven more than 1,800 miles. Greenhouse effect of beef comes from the loss of co2 absorbing trees, grasses and other year round plant cover on land where the feed crops are grown and harvested. Methane given off by animal waste and by the animals themselves as they digest their food.

Summary Greenhouse gases are gases that trap solar energy, thereby warming the earths surface. Such gases contain carbon dioxide and methane. The article mainly focuses on one of the sources of greenhouse which are meat products. Our diet affects the production of greenhouse gases which affects global warming. Producing beef has a surprising environmental cost; it releases prodigious amounts of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. In comparison beef production generates greenhouse gases that contribute more than 13 times as much to

global warming as do the gases emitted from producing chicken or as much as a car driven more than 1800 miles. Over all the article shows we can either contribute or decrease greenhouse gas emissions based on our diet. My point of view I was surprised to know that what I ate would affect the way of life and the way the environment is. People who eat meat have more foot print on the earth than vegetarians. The article compares the amount of greenhouse gas produced by a vegetable and meat as the amount emitted by half pound potato is the same us 0.17 mile while the amount emitted by beef is 1800 miles which is a huge difference. As a solution I recommend decreasing meat in our diet will be more effective for both our health and our environment.

So what? Meat produces as much as greenhouse gases as a 1800 mile car. Says who? Nathan Fiala What if.? We decreased meat from our diet? Greenhouse gases emission would increase in a huge rate. What does this remind me of? Food Inc. video
