03/24-03/29 Student Teaching Weekly # 3 (second placement) How did you spend your time this week?

What responsibilities did you have?

1.

Overall, my primary responsibilities were observing my mentor (Mr. Gibson) lessons, observing the students, and presenting a lesson to 6th period over determining the y-intercept form of an equation from context (a story problem). My secondary responsibilities included memorizing students' names, and designing my lesson plan template (with notes for me). 2. What was your most satisfying and challenging experiences? Honestly, getting to know the students names and getting use to the technology were challenging for me. Also, I found it challenging to complete the real-time data gathering required to partition the class into the appropriate groups for their activities. One final note: I need to work on not saying "you guys," and address them as "mathematicians." For me, the most satisfying moments game with working and helping students. It is very awarding when I explain something to them, and they make the "connection." Also it's great feeling when the students respect me as a teacher. 3. What are the plans for the upcoming week?

Overall, the goal for this unit is for the students to be able to solve system of linear equations using graphical solutions and be able to solve real-world problems that involve a system of two linear functions. Previously, we learned how to determine the linear equations from context (a story problem). Currently, we are practicing our skills on solving for x, giving an equation. Next week, Mr. Gibson and his colleagues are rolling out his new project. All of the assignments will be online, and the students will use various other online resources such as IXL and Khan Academy. The students will be given all of the weeks assignments on Monday and will be able to work at their own pace. When they complete all of the weeks assignments they can per sue other academic interest. At the end of the week, the students will complete an assessment. My plans for this week is to work on my presentations (including technology). Also, it's my goal to be use the CPS unit to gather real time data and use it to set up groups in class. The data gathered from CPS and the quizzes will be partitioned into three list - Green, Yellow, and Red. The students on the green list will be free to study at their own pace, while red group will be assigned task. My final goal for the week is to use the space in the classroom to help remind me of how to use technology and how to address the students (mathematicians.) 03/31-04/04 Student Teaching Weekly # 1 (second placement) 1. How did you spend your time this week? What responsibilities did you have?

Overall, the majority of the time was spent observing and helping students in small groups with problems. This week, I had the responsibility of taking attendance at the start of each class. Also, I had the opportunity design worksheets for a unit students who do not have internet access at home. The majority of homework is completed via Khan Academy or IXL, but the student was spending time at his relative and does not have internet access. The worksheet covers Linear Transformations (Translations, Reflections, and Rotations). 2. What was your most satisfying and challenging experiences?

There were two challenging experiences this week. First, I was responsible for taking attendance. I am not the best at memorizing names and faces, so I struggled with this. This week, I will spend a little bit more time with each student during the PBIT (Problem Based Instructional Task) and get to know them better. Also, as Gibson found out, I do not do well with completing unplanned task, especially if I do not have a variety of items to choose from. For example, I spent a long time designing the worksheet for the students. Gibson provided me with the website of the textbook and the internet to complete the task. However, I could not find the worksheets with the problems I wanted to provide the students. In the end there was a lesson learned I do not need to design perfect worksheets for the students, I need to design worksheets that is representational of what is expected of the students. For me, the most satisfying experience was student visits at home on Saturday. The day with a meeting, quickly followed by purchasing juice and doughnuts and Hy Vee. Next we proceeded with traveling a student's home to talk about homework and to give them the juice and doughnuts. At our first visit, no one answered the door. However, on our third visit, the student was home but not the parent. Gibson gave the student the snack and asked him to spend 20 minutes a day working on the homework. The student seemed surprised, but accepted the snack. On the next visit, we greeted by the parent of the student, but not the student. She invited us into the duplex and we talked about her grades and what the student could do to improve the grade. 3. What are the plans for the upcoming week?

Next week, we will be finishing up transformations and transitioning to system of linear equations. I will start teaching one period. Also, Gibson and his staff are working a project that will transition class based instruction to group based instruction. Overall, I am excited to see how this program will work. 03/24-03/29 Student Teaching Weekly # 1 (second placement) 1. How did you spend your time this week? What responsibilities did you have?

For the majority of the week, I spent my time observing and helping students with transformations (Translations, Reflections, and Rotations. Also, I was responsible for a mini lesson that is presented during the entrance activity. The mini lesson is designed to help students

get achieve a level 3 or proficient on the current standard. Next week, we will be completing district testing and cover the transformation known as dilations. 2. What was your most satisfying and challenging experiences?

Overall, my most satisfying experience and Weeks Middle School was seeing several teaching strategies used such as the following: Tell Me Something Good two students share something good that happened. Mile-A-Minute One student acts out vocabulary and other guesses what it is. Exercise Used during objects to help students remember objectives and give the students a chance to get their blood flowing. Reinforcement- Rewarding students with mints when a desired behavior is modeled. 3. What are the plans for the upcoming week?

Next week, we will be completing district testing and cover the transformation known as dilations. I will be missing part of the week to complete my Praxis II tests.
