3.0 Students demonstrate an understanding of the notion of discrete random variables by using this concept to solve for the probabilities of outcomes, such as the probability of the occurrence of five or fewer heads in 14 coin tosses. 5.0 Students know the definition of the mean of a discrete random variable and can determine the mean for a particular discrete random variable. 6.0 Students know the definition of the variance of a discrete random variable and can determine the variance for a particular discrete random variable 7.0 Students demonstrate an understanding of the standard distributions (normal, binomial, and exponential) and can use the distributions to solve for events in problems in which the distribution belongs to those families
Big Ideas:

In this lesson, students will be able to apply their knowledge of discrete random variables in order to determine: 1. 2. 3. The expected outcomes of an experiment for a discrete random variable (regression). The variance/spread of the experiment (graphical). The standard deviation from the expected outcomes how far some data points deviate from the mean).

After students understand how to use discrete random variables to determine expected outcomes of some experiment, students will be able to graph data in order to better identify, analyze, and understand trends from an experiment. Probability and statistics are used to analyze data in the working world, you know, the somewhat boring stuff like variables that lead to stock market crashes, variables that drive people to become criminals, variables that have lifelong psychological effects, et cetera, et cetera. Well, probability and statistics can also be used for fun stuff. Watch below to see how you can use statistics in your favor!
Unit Goals and Objectives:

This project will be spread across several weeks in order for students to gain a better understanding of the theory behind random variables and the application of random variables. Students will learn the theory behind random variables, expected values, and variances and apply them to scenarios respective to the appropriate random variable such as Bernoulli, binomial, geometric, and the negative binomial distributions. Mastery of the subject will include an oral presentation with critiques as well as an extensive paper which will demonstrate cognitive behavior since students will use logic and reason to understand real life situations.
Unit Summary:

This project is supposed to help you understand just how applicable mathematics is to the world. My goal is to convince you that math is actually pretty cool and its applications are quite helpful and knowing how to compute probabilities and read statistics may be advantageous to you in the future! This project will consist of collecting data, computing expected outcomes, computing the standard deviation from the mean of the data, graphing data, reading, analyzing, and coming to a conclusion about the data collected.
