HALLOWEEN

When do we see witches, ghosts, and monsters?

On Halloween! Halloween is a holiday when kids
dress up in their favorite costumes-as witches,
ghosts, princesses, and superheroes.

They go from house to house and knock on the doors.

When an adult opens the door the kids all
yell "trick-or-treat." The adult gives the kids candy.
Then the kids run to the next house.

FOURTH OF JULY
a picnic

The fourth of July is the United States birthday.

On July 4, 1776, thirteen British colonies in the
New World declared independence from Britain.
This was the birth of the United States.

Today, people celebrate this holiday by having picnics

and going to parades. When night falls there are big
fireworks shows with lots of colors gold, silver, red,
and blue. The people watching cheer the most
spectacular fireworks by saying ooh! and ah!

THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is an American holiday when family and

friends eat a big dinner together. What do people
eat on Thanksgiving? You will probably find a big
turkey on the Thanksgiving dinner table. You may also
find squash, potatoes, cranberry sauce, and
pumpkin pie. The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag
Indians celebrated the first American Thanksgiving
together a long time ago.
The Wampanoag Indians were some of the first
American inhabitants and the Pilgrims were settlers
from England. They ate many of the same foods
people still eat today.

GUY FAWKES ' NIGHT

On 5 November 1605, Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the

Houses of Parliament in London to kill the king, James I.
His plan, known as the Gunpowder Plot, failed, and he
was caught and executed. Today, this date is celebrated
in the U.K. by burning models of Guy Fawkes on bonfires
and having huge fireworks displays. Children learn this
rhyme to help them remember the story behind Guy
Fawkes Night:

Remember, remember
The Fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

ST PATRICK'S DAY

St Patrick's Day is a holiday in Ireland, celebrated on

March 17th. It celebrates the patron saint, Patrick,
who came from Wales to Ireland as a slave around
460 A.D. Legend has it that he banished all the
snakes fromIreland by sending them into the sea.
Today, people celebrate St Patrick's Day around the
world with parades, music, dancing and sometimes by
painting their faces green!

THE PANTOMIME

The Pantomime, also known as Panto, is a much-loved

tradition in Britain that usually takes place at
Christmas time. It began in the Middle Ages and it is
still very popular with adults and children today. It
takes place in a theatre and is based on fairy tales,
such as Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. The audience
joins in the fun by clapping and singing along and
children must warn the characters when the villain
comes on stage by shouting 'He's behind you!'
