Week of remembrance

From 13th to 18th May, Gashora Girls Academy had a week of remembrance, during which two speakers came, one on Monday and another one on Thursday. A walk to remember was done on 18th May. This event was organized by the members of the Peace and love proclaimers club. On 13th Mark Gwamaka, one of the founders of Peace and love proclaimers in Rwanda came to Gashora. He encouraged youth by telling them they can make a difference. Each person was asked what he or she can do to change this nation, Rwanda. You choose to be what you want to be. Help others. No matter what you do, either you are paid or not, there would be a blessing. Let you bring the healness in your family. The afternoon of 16th, Jean-Michel Habineza another founder of the Peace and Love Proclaimers group was at Gashora. He pointed out that Rwandans dont need to act as victims and to point things at each other since they are all victims. Jean-Michel also emphasized that battle is not the young Rwandans but their parents. Since they made their choice, they did what they did and the battle of Rwandan youth, today, is the one of bringing peace. The students participated in a small debate that happened and the motions were Is it the white to blame for the genocide? Was there peace and unity in Rwanda before colonization? Is there currently peace in Rwanda?. Near the end of the debate, one of the students underlined that, Peace is all about what you have in your heart In the Walk to remember, Gashora Girls moved from the school, Gashora Girls Academy, to the memorial site of Gashora. We were joined by Dihiro School, ESPEGA and some of the government officers

In his speech, after the walk, Mr. Thorp apologized on behalf of his country (USA) and honored Rwanda. He acknowledged the unbelievable progress of Rwanda after the genocide. He marked that it is high time for the world to think Rwanda as an achieving, progressing, and able country to recover from the horrors of the genocide. Lets stand up together saying NO to genocide by being peace sowers and positive change makers.
