English 1102 3 March 2014 Proposal For the semester long project, our group plans on looking at the historic period of prohibition. Of course as college students to go against alcohol sales seems quite unreal. And for most people in America, prohibition seemed just that, unreal. Our group will approach the semester-long multimodal inquiry project with facts that prove the legitimacy of our claim. Though prohibition had all the right intentions, we believe it hurt the country economically and sociologically by taking out a major, profitable item in industry and at the bar. As in any point in recent history, prohibition has a wide range of researchable items. Atkins Library is a great way to start. Through the Atkins web portal, we plan to use the online database to analyze the time period. Features like America History & Culture will allow our group to find how prohibition affected America. This is important for when previously looked at many countries had prohibition periods, so sorting through Australias, Russias and Chinas is a little easier when using the American History & Culture. To design the project our group will take advantage of PowerPoint for the most part. We are required to have a wide range of modes in which we present. To incorporate these, our group will use video, pictures, music and techniques off of the computer screen to drive home our claim towards prohibition.

Olmstead & Wilson Though videos and pictures can incorporate a lot of projects, prohibition started in a time period where video was becoming a medium in the period. Using clips of how life was in the time period will show a large portion of the sociological impact-taking place. As for the economic, statistical data presented on a 2 fold poster board will allow our group to show the amounts of money lost during the prohibition period. Finally, music and clips of the movie The Godfather will help inhibit what roles mafia had in the process of illegally distributing alcohol and contributing to the corruption taking place. In our two-man group, we will split the sides of sociological and economical importance. Jesse Olmstead will take the economical role, identifying how the times brought down industries and profited gangsters. Brock Wilson will take on the sociological role, looking at the ways prohibition caused children to become deviant, mafias to form, and so on. Our timeline is as follows: By March 28th we hope to get all of our research for the project down. That includes 10 sources. By April 4th we hope to have the power point complete. By April 10th (Peer Review Day) we hope to have the entire presentation done. This is including additional visuals and presentation formats. In addition we hope to recite our presentation a few times, so on presentation day, we will be not only prepared but will be able to engage the audience. Finally, by April 15th, our group should be ready to present our project and research to the class. Keeping this timeline will allow for our group to finish in a timely manner so there will be no rushed material on our project, and enough time to master the material.
