Homemade Equipment Lesson Plan Field Work: Recreation Center Athens Physical Education and Math: 4th Grade

e Teacher: Chasmine Harris Lesson Objective: Students will roll simulated dice and work with a team to review the steps for solving a multiplication or division problem. Students will work independently and as pairs at Dice Math station. The Common Core Georgia Performance Standards used in this lesson are as follows: MCC4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. MCC4.NBT.6 Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Physical Education Georgia Performance Standards are as follows: PE4.1 Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. a. Demonstrates an overhand throw PE4.3 Participates regularly in physical activity. a. Encourages others to participate in physical activity. PE4.5 Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. a. Learns to resolve conflicts using different strategies. PE4.6 Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction. a. Chooses to participate in formal and/or informal physical activities that are enjoyable. Equipment: Two sets of plush dice, two dry erase boards, two dry erase markers, two dry erasers or paper towels, extra paper and pencils, two sets of locomotor skill sheets, six phone a group member cards, six phone a opponent cards Set-Up: There will be two sets of dice in different colors to differentiate teams spread apart enough so that both teams will have ample room to work. Next to each set of dice there will be a dry erase board with a dry erase marker and eraser or paper towel and a locomotor skill sheet.

Play: This game will be played as both a whole class activity and a center activity during math centers. For the whole class activity, the class will be divided into two groups by the month of their birthday. January-June will be one time and July-December will be another unless I see that one team has too many people on it and then I will plan accordingly. Each team will have their set of dice, a locomotor skill sheet, three phone a group member cards, extra sheets of paper and pencils, a dry erase board, a dry erase marker and a dry eraser or paper towel. The groups will each spread apart so they are far enough apart to work and then take 10 steps away from the start of their group and place their dice on the ground. The group will then decided based on the first letter of their first name who will be the first person in their group to go and roll the dice. Once they have decided that and have an order of who will go in what order, I will tell them to go and the person that is first will pick a locomotor skill to do to get to the dice. The student will go to the dice doing that locomotor skill and roll the dice. First they will roll the two numbered dice, and get a number like 21. Next, they will roll the symbol to see what operation they get for example division and then they will roll the two number signs again and say they get 03. They will then come back to their group doing that same locomotive skill and they will tell their group the problem. The entire group is going to work the problem out but they arent allowed to tell the person who rolled the dice unless they decide to use one of their phone a group member options. The two teams will be working simultaneously and the first person to get the answer correct will get a point. The game will then continue until every student has gone. The team with the most points will get to line up for recess first. For a math center, this game will be played the same except it will be done one on one and the phone a group member will be a phone an opponent card instead. During centers, the game will be played until it is time to switch centers or it is time to clean up.

Is my equipment? Safe

The dice are made out of cotton and jersey knit fabric with cotton stuffing. As long as the dice are rolled on the ground and use the correct way, they are safe to be used. Students will know not to throw the dice around the room or at anyone else.

Durable

The dice were made from the same kind of material that clothes are made from. They were sewn together on a sewing machine with double stitching instead of hand stitching to ensure that they do not come apart. The numbers and symbols were written on the dice with permanent marker so when they are washed, the numbers will not wash away easily.

Functional

The dice were created and have been tested to make sure that they roll properly. Since they are made with cotton stuffing, there is no potential for them to roll away which will help to keep the game running smoothly without the need to pause the game so someone can chase a dice around the room.

Colorful

The dice were made from bright fabric. One set is a bright white with red dots all over it and the other set is completely red. The numbers and symbols were written on the dice with a bold black permanent marker so that they will stand out one the fabric.

How My Equipment was made Equipment: Dice Math Materials: Red Fabric Red Polka Dot Fabric Cotton Stuffing Red Thread Sewing Machine Scissors Snips Ruler Black Permanent Marker Phone Template Laminating Machine Computer Printer 12 8 x 5 Index Cards

Procedure: First for the dice, I took the two big pieces of scrap fabric and tried to cut out 36 separate squares measuring 12 x 12. After I cut out all of the squares, I sewed two of the same color squares together with red thread until I had 18 read rectangles and 18 polka dot rectangles. Next, I took two of the same color rectangles and sewed one short end of one rectangle to one long end of the other rectangle and I took the last rectangle and sewed it to the opposite long side of the rectangle. I then sewed all the sides together into the shape of a cube until I had one part left open. After this, I turned the cube onto the correct side and stuffed it with the stuffing and sewed the cube closed. I used the snips once I got done sewing all of the cubes shut and cut off all of the loose thread. Finally, I used a black permanent marker to write all of the numbers and symbols on all of the cubes and I tested them to make sure that they would roll properly. For the phone an opponent and phone a group member cards, I first went online and found a phone template and copied that to a word document. I then formatted the page so that it would fit on a standard 8x5 index card. Then I inserted word art and type in them what I

wanted them to say. Then I printed them on my printer and use a laminating machine to laminate them so that they would last for a while.
