This piece may be a little challenging to play, especially for the lower part, which
requires frequent use of half-holing. However, you may want to try playing it with a
friend NAF player. The two flutes will have to be in different keys, as shown below:

This version of this piece is easier to play because the player of the lower part will
not need to do any half-holing. Also, the two flutes will be in the same key. The
tradeoff is that they will sound in the same register, which was not the original
intention of the composer.

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.

Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.

His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.
Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.
Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, loves purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessd we shall meet at last.
Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise
On earth, believing, to Thy Lord on high;
Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,
So shall He view thee with a well pleased eye.
Be still, my soul: the Sun of life divine

"Repeat to each of the four directions."

Composition Note: This melody is commonly sung in mode 5 pentatonic which is problematic when played
upon a mode 1 pentatonic flute. But by changing one note, the secound 'ho' in the lyrics, the melody is easily
fits the basic scale of these flutes.

Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy great help Ive come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood;
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily Im constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Heres my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
And by the light of that same star
Three Wise Men came from country far;
To seek for a King was their intent,
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
This star drew nigh to the northwest,
Over Bethlehem it took its rest;
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Then did they know assuredly
Within that house the King did lie;
One entered it them for to see,
And found the Babe in poverty.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Then entered in those Wise Men three,
Full reverently upon the knee,
And offered there, in His presence,
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Between an ox stall and an ass,
This Child truly there He was;
For want of clothing they did Him lay
All in a manger, among the hay.

Sire, the night is darker now, and the wind blows stronger,

Mark my footsteps, my good page, tread now in them boldly,
You shall find the winters rage freeze your blood less coldly.

Arrangement Note: Only one note in the original melody did not fit the NAF. This note, the 2nd note of the 8th
measure, was altered from a half-holing the bottom finger hole to simply repeating the note prior. This should
work fine if you are playing solo. If you are playing this melody along with other musicians, this substitution
may not sound correct, i.e., fit their chord change at this note. In this case try substituting a C#, i.e., the same
fingering as the 2nd note of the 7th measure. Alternatively, you could could half-hole the bottom finger hole but
the series of fingering of that measure would be awkward.

Other Verses
Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
'Glory to the newborn King!'
Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
'Glory to the newborn King!'

Arrangement Note: There seems to be as many variations in this melody as there are for its lyrics, which in
this case are the original lyrics from a female perspective. This arrangement keeps to a simplified rhythm and
fingering. The third note was changed to avoid half-holing the bottom hole, and the closing phrase was
reworked so the entire piece would fit the range of the NAF.
Traditional Lyrics (continued):
If I had listened what Mama said, I'd be at home today.
Being so young and foolish, poor boy, let a rambler lead me astray.
Go tell my baby sister never do like I have done
To shun that house in New Orleans they call the Rising Sun.
My mother she's a tailor, she sewed these new blue jeans.
My sweetheart, he's a drunkard, Lord, Lord, drinks down in New Orleans.
The only thing a drunkard needs is a suitcase and a trunk.
The only time he's satisfied is when he's on a drunk.

Fills his glasses to the brim, passes them around.

Only pleasure he gets out of life is hoboin' from town to town.
One foot is on the platform and the other one on the train.
I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain.
Going back to New Orleans, my race is almost run.
Going back to spend the rest of my days beneath that Rising Sun.

exception is the highest note is barely out of range of most flutes, so this arrangement lowers that note by a
half-step. Rondeau is also the source material for the theme music to PBS's Masterpiece Theatre.

Additional Verses
Hardest work I ever did,
Was working on the farm,
Easiest work I ever did
Swing my true love's arm.
Chorus:
Swing and turn, Jubilee,
Live and learn Jubilee.
Swing and turn, Jubilee,
Live and learn Jubilee.
Coffee grows on a white oak tree,
Sugar runs in brandy
Girls as sweet as a lump of gold,
Boys as sweet as candy.
Chorus
Some will come on Saturday night
Some will come on Sunday,
And if you give them half a chance
They'll be back on Monday.
Chorus
Saddle up the old gray horse,
Who will be the rider?
Ride him down to the corner store
And get a jug of cider.
If I had a needle and thread
As fine as I could sew
I'd sew my true love to my side
And down this creek I'd go.
If I had no horse to ride
I'd be found a-crawlin'
Up and down this rocky road
Lookin' for my darlin'.
