Interview with King County Unincorporated Community Service Area Program Manager, Alan Painter Date: Wednesday, March

26th, 2014 1. What positive aspects of our citys reputation would you like to continue? There is great energy from the community, a drive to build and maintain improvements in many realms. One outstanding example is Ayanna Brown turning the tragedy of her sons death into a foundation that carries on his legacy for the better of the community and all of the community that rallies together to celebrate her work and commemorate her son. 2. What is the most disruptive issue in our community? Whether the future includes annexation to a neighboring City. 3. What are your top priorities as Manager of the Unincorporated Community Service Area Program? Working toward greater collaboration between organizations serving Skyway residents. Providing access to County resources to benefit the community. Id also like to see volunteers working more with the youth to help get them up to speed, giving them more hope for the future and clear paths to college. There are not as many programs or support for youth as Id like to see. 4. What major constraints limit what you are able to do from your perspective? The energy toward change hasnt focused itself to reach consensus yet. Some of this was seen in the sides taken in annexation. We saw clear priorities for Fire and Police services but no unified response for things like kids, jobs, businesses and social support. We need to agree on how to prioritize the present needs with the future hopes for change. 5. What organizations are really making a difference in the city? The VFW reaches out to many different organizations and is a unifying group that is central to the community in the West Hill. It works beyond its own agenda to advance the visions of others which is truly amazing to see such a selfless group. I also appreciate the work done by the West Hill Community Association to advocate for public safety and Skyway Solutions efforts to advocate for a strong community place of support. 6. What are the key indicators that progress is being made in your area? There arent any that I specifically use for my department, but I personally look at the high school graduation rate and how many of those students go onto higher education including community or technical colleges. More specifically, there are benchmarks from Kindergarten, 3rd 8th and 12th grade as well. I look at vacancies of commercial facilities, home values increasing with neighboring communities as well as crime rates. On a softer note, I also look at the level of community involvement. 7. Can you think of anything else youd like for us to pray for?

People better understanding the need to help kids grow and succeed in life. It takes people in the community coming alongside the youth, helping them get into jobs earlier, seeing college and career as a normal part of life even if they did not have that experience yet. We need lasting commitments to help the youth. 8. Is there anything youd like for us to pray for you personally? Collaboration within the community project and center as Im helping many different groups with different ideas.
