Infrastructure Design and Budget This document details the relevant design and budget for a local construction company. The company has detailed the need to host several services internally with the intention of expanding the si e of the company in terms of employees. The company has also provided a budget of !"#$%%% for the purchase of software licenses as well as hardware. Design Requirements The following services will be hosted internally: &eb 'ervers Database 'erver (ile 'erver Print 'erver Internal DN' D)CP *ctive Directory

The web server will consist of two web servers whose load will be balanced using a hardware load balancer +designed and implemented by the networ, ing group-. The

2 database server is expected to run .icrosoft '/0 'erver 1%%2 31. The company currently has #% users with an expected growth to "%% users. The system to be designed should therefore support the current #% users as well as be easily scalable. Design Considerations The company re4uirements for this infrastructure give rise to several considerations in order to achieve the desired goal. The first consideration is consolidation due to the tight budget. The other consideration is scalability due to the planned growth of the company. The company intends to host some sensitive services internally whose failure may lead to a crisis and hence redundancy. The system also needs to be accessible at all times to the intended users and thus availability. 1. Consolidation The company has provided a limited budget of !"#$%%%5 this means that in designing this infrastructure some of the systems will have to be shared on a single server. Ta,ing in consideration the intended services to be hosted internally and the use of .icrosoft products here are some of the services that can share server machines: *ctive Directory$ DN' and D)CP: &hile using a server running .icrosoft &indows 'erver$ it is possible to install of these services into a single server machine (ile 'erver and Print 'erver: The file server is only intended only for important documents. This implies that access to the file server will be minimal and therefore can be shared with a less bul,y service of the print server.

3 2. Scalability The company currently has #% employees with an expected growth to "%% users. The design has been created to cater for the #% users however in several provisions have been made for scalability. 'ome of the considerations are in regard to storage$ processing and memory of the servers. In case of an upgrade the system has been designed to only need minimal expenditure in upgrading these aspects. 3. Redundancy There are several services that company will be hosting internally that will re4uire redundancy to avoid loss of data incase of any form of failure. This can be achieved by duplication of the service or scheduled bac, ups. The following are some of the services that re4uire redundancy. The company re4uires its file server for important files and therefore this server re4uires to be bac,ed up every time any changes are made. This design includes the ac4uisition of a co6located server to be used as the file server bac,up. The file server will also have access to cloud storage to ensure no data will be lost in case the co6located server is offline. The other service that re4uires redundancy is the database server. The database server can also be bac,ed up using a co6located server. 4. Availability This consideration addresses the need for the system services to always be accessible to the users and to its customers. The availability of a system is affected by several factors that can be avoided or measures ta,en. 'ome of these issues include power failures and networ, failure. This design ta,es into consideration the ac4uisition of

& a power bac,ups and an additional Internet connection to avoid any downtime. The setup of the collocated servers is such that in case of failure of the main servers then it can ta,e over as the primary server until the main server is bac, online. To improve on the speed the efficiency of the server$ the indexing service on this machine was disabled to save on the resources since the machine had shared roles. Print Server Role The print server service was shared on the same machine as the file server. The
