PCP

(Phencyclidine)

HISTORY
First synthesized in 1926 under the name Sernyl.

First used as anesthetic in 1950s- discontinued due to hallucinations, anxiety, agitation

Classified as schedule II drug by DEA

Became substance of abuse in mid 1960s

Started in pill form- powder form became popular in 1970sstarted being smoked or snorted

PCP
Made out of various chemicals found in industrial sectors Cyanide, motor fuel

EMOTIONAL EFFECTS
Euphoria Feeling of unreality/dissociation Distorted sense of body Paranoia

EMOTIONAL EFFECTS
Feeling of weightlessness Visual and auditory hallucinations Anxiety Agitation

PHYSICAL EFFECTS
Impaired motor skills Blurred vision Decreased sensitivity/awareness to pain Irregular heartbeat

PHYSICAL EFFECTS
High/low blood pressure

Nausea

Increased body temperature

LONG TERM EFFECTS


Impaired memory Flashbacks similar to LSD Speech problems (stuttering) Anxiety/depression Toxic psychosis- aggressive, hostile behavior, paranoia, delusional thinking, auditory hallucinations

RISKS
Gives users feeling they have superhuman strength Can be addictive, causes dependence People who experience violent outbursts often have history of psychosis or antisocial behavior

Unaware of dangers and limitations they have Most deaths caused from

delusions/other psychological
consequences (drowning, jumping from high places, car accidents, self mutilation, suicides,

homicides)

PENALTIES
Trafficking- 10 years-life in prison Possession- 3rd degree felony, 0-5 years in prison and/or up to a $10,000 fine Distributing- 2nd degree felony, 1-15 years in prison and/or up to $10,000 fine
