For the attention of Headteachers, History Coordinators and all Key Stage 2 teachers Dear Colleague, This workshop is an opportunity for Key Stage 2 teachers to find out about the requirements for History in the new National Curriculum. The sessions led by Ian Coulson and Andrew Harmsworth will examine the new primary history curriculum and its implications on teaching history, topic planning and enquiry based learning. The afternoon will look in more detail at planning a unit of work where the focus will be on one of the new units, prehistoric Britain. The last session of the day will provide information about resources for teaching, especially those offered by Canterbury Museums. All delegates will receive a CD containing all the days materials and other resources for teaching History at Key Stage 2. Planning to attend? The price per delegate is 110. 09.15 09:30 09:45 Arrival and coffee Welcome and introduction Session 1: What are the requirements of the new primary history curriculum? Session Leaders: Andrew Harmsworth and Ian Coulson Coffee Session 2: Planning an historical enquiry This session will examine how to plan your Key Stage 2 History programme as a whole and how to plan individual enquiry-based schemes of work. It will be practical, including teaching activities, and will involve teachers working in small groups. Lunch Buffet lunch provided for all delegates. Session 3: Planning a study unit: Prehistoric Britain This session will look at planning this new study unit. The focus will be on an overview followed by a local study on the Bronze Age boat from Dover. The issue of teaching chronology will be included. Session 4: What resources are available? This session will include advice from Martin Crowther, Canterbury Museums. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions. Finish

Andrew Harmsworth is known nationally for his contribution to the teaching of history. He has taught for 36 years as a Head of History, Advisory Teacher and Advanced Skills Teacher. He has written textbooks on Elizabeth Is reign and the Civil war period as well as books for younger children, with Canterbury Archaeological Trust on Roman and Medieval Canterbury.
Martin Crowther is Learning and Access Manager for the Canterbury group of museums and galleries.
