Content .now that some 5uropean countries, including 5ngland, were in competition to increase their wealth and power by e9panding their empires to (merica. 59plain that the first permanent 5nglish settlement in (merica was *amestown, founded in ?@AB as an economic venture. 59plain the following reasons for 5nglish coloni2ation in (merica/ 5ngland wanted to establish an (merican colony to increase her wealth and power. 5ngland hoped to find silver and gold in (merica.

(n (merican settlement would furnish raw materials that could not be grown or obtained in 5ngland, while opening new markets for trade.

The 7eneral (ssembly included two representatives, called burgesses, from each of the divisions of Virginia, along with the governor!s council and the governor. .now that the current Virginia 7eneral (ssembly dates back to ?@?D with the establishment of the 7eneral (ssembly and its burgesses in *amestown. 6t was the first elected legislative body in 5nglish (merica giving settlers the opportunity to control their own government.

.now that by the ?@EAs, the burgesses became a separate legislative body, called the Fouse of %urgesses. They met separately from the 7overnor!s "ouncil as one of the two legislative bodies of the 7eneral (ssembly.

Understand how the native peoples contributed to the survival of the *amestown settlers in several ways/ #owhatan, chief of many tribes, provided leadership to his people and taught the settlers survival skills. #ocahontas, daughter of #owhatan, served as a contact between the native peoples and the 5nglish. The native peoples showed the settlers how to plant corn and tobacco.

Understand that the actions of *ack *ouett prevented the capture of key members of the Virginia 7eneral (ssembly. *ack *ouett rode on horseback through the backwoods of Virginia to "harlottesville to warn Thomas *efferson, then the governor of Virginia, that the %ritish were coming to arrest him and members of the 7eneral (ssembly.

Understand that the Virginia -eclaration of &ights and the Virginia Statute for &eligious 4reedom provided significant rights.

6dentify that the Virginia -eclaration of &ights, written by 7eorge 'ason, states that all Virginians have many rights, including freedom of religion and freedom of the press.

6dentify that the Virginia Statute for &eligious 4reedom, written by Thomas *efferson, states that all people should be free to worship as they please. Understand that geography influenced the movement of people and ideas as Virginians moved to and beyond the Virginia frontier.

59plain that after the (merican &evolution, Virginia!s agricultural base began to change, and as a result, large numbers of Virginians moved west and to the deep South to find better farmland and new opportunities.

Understand the following geographic influences/ Tobacco farming was hard on the soil, causing many farmers to look west and south for new land to farm. Virginians migrated into western territories, looking for large areas of land and new opportunities. (s Virginians moved, they took their traditions, ideas, and cultures with them.

Settlers crossed the (ppalachian 'ountains through the "umberland 7ap as they migrated to new lands in the west.

Civil War and Reconstruction

Content Understand that because of economic differences between the 1orth and South, they were unable to resolve their conflicts, and the South seceded from the United States.

Understand that Virginians were divided about secession from the Union, which led to the creation of 0est Virginia.
